I didn't set up a gimbal which was nice as I could pop the Hero8 in my pocket when not in use, whereas an iPhone-on-gimbal setup required it be in my hand the entire time. Of course, it was up for debate if the stabilization of the GoPro was worth a hoot since this was the first 'real world' test

I'm not sure there's much of a motive with this post. I just had a bit of a "holy cow" moment when this all came together as I found myself really resisting a GoPro purchase under the assumption that the cost did not justify what benefits I'd get over my prior setup with my phone. Clearly, I was wrong, but given the outcome I couldn't be happier with waving that white flag.

In one evening I was able to take the footage from the GoPro (which was CFR out of the gate - awesome), generate some proxies (easy with the lower CPU required to churn up low res proxy files), and put together a pretty funny 5 minute video that I'm beyond happy with. The stabilization I experienced with the GoPro footage was shocking (in a good way). I didn't have white balance travel like I had on the iPhone (despite being set to 'auto') and the artifacts I simply didn't see (high bitrate ftw?). It's not to say the iPhone was bad at video recording, but the GoPro was an improvement in a number of ways that simply wore me thin with using the iPhone full time

 High, though, is where the camera really shines. It is a massive improvement over last year’s feature and the best thing about it is that it doesn’t crop any more than the regular On mode (10 percent crop). It’s pretty amazing. One of the things I really dinged DJI on in my Osmo Action cam review was that while the stabilization was excellent, it cropped the footage dramatically and there was a drop in quality

 HyperSmooth 2.0 in High mode is ultra-smooth while remaining nice and wide, and I still don’t know what kind of dark magic they used to keep from cropping it any more than last year. The new lens is sharp, and the added bit rate and poppier color science make your videos look more dramatic right out of the camera (even if I think they went a bit heavy on the contrast). I’m also excited about the Mods, which should make this an even more versatile camera (though a built-in, front-facing screen like DJI’s would still be way more convenient)

 PolarPro and other companies will be making stick-on lens covers (as well as ND filters and such), which I would definitely recommend you buy. The heat issue is concerning, but I haven’t had one overheat and shut down yet, so for now I’d just advise caution if you’re going to be shooting on a hot day.

Aside from the usual things on Google (keep it on inside pocket, use a waterproof case to insulate, etc.), what else can I do to extend battery life in cold temps? I am definitely interested in the new enduro battery and its performance in the cold. Would an accessory like the HoodyCam work as well? I plan to use my GoPro to supplement a friend's filming of our Denali expedition next spring with the intention of using it to capture the gnarlier moments where we don't particularly want to take out the larger camera rig.

 400gb-512gb card sizes offer the best value and capacity right now. Don't let manufacturers limit you to small card sizes if you plan on recording lots of video. There is no technical reason that a camera cannot work with a high capacity card. Any manufacturer who locks out larger card sizes that you can now buy for less than $50 is doing so because they are anti-consumer

Not designed for continuous use

 When I turn on the gopro, it says the batteries are 100%, but when they get down to 90%, they die. Did I burn out 90% of the battery by using more amps? When I charge the batteries, they start at zero, and then quickly escalate up to 90% within seconds, and then charge the rest of the way at normal speed. This has happened to 3 (official GoPro batteries in the last month, which is when I started using the charger. The batteries are also 2+ years old

My Hero8 batteries need a USB-C charge of 5v, 1a-2a. My Samsung phone came with a USB-C power delivery charger that puts out 5v, 3a. Hero 8 black is premium, ive got one and i still use it today. If you can afford a 9 or 10 deffo go for it as better video quality is always better regardless of how fast you can ride 🤙

Merry Christmas! I'm looking to go buy myself a Go-Pro. The issue is I'm not a very fast rider, I can do easier double blacks but nothing close to what I see on YouTube. Is there no need then for me to get the 9 or 10, and instead get a go pro hero 8?
