The GRADO Prestige Gold2 Phono Cartridge! Record-ology!

A very pleasant and listenable cartridge, but can hum on a DD turntable. Cost - $99CDN (sale).

Understanding this sub is "budget" audiophile, thought I'd run some less expensive MM cartridges through my deck.  The least expensive is a Shure M44 that came on an old free table.  Most expensive is a still affordable $120 Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN.

Test track was "Famous Last Words" from the "Living With Ghosts" 10-year anniversary release of MCR's "Welcome to the Black Parade".

First up was the Shure M44 with a Tonar Elliptical stylus.  Best description - thumpy.  Lots of bottom end, but dull in the midrange, and missing top end detail.  I can see why this is (was) such a popular cartridge for DJs.  Cost - $20CDN for the stylus.

Second up was an Ortofon Omega.  Suddenly much more mid detail, with a "normal" amount of bass.  Top end was good but not overly sharp.  Excellent value for the money, but did get congested in the mids when the music for more complicated.  Cost - $35CDN.

Third up was a Grado Prestige Green.  Completely different presentation than the other two cartridges, with an overall cleaner sound.  Has the Grado "house sound" which has warm mids, solid bass, and some rolled off top end.  A very pleasant and listenable cartridge, but can hum on a DD turntable.  Cost - $99CDN (sale).

Last up was the Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN, the only cartridge with a nude elliptical diamond.  A clear step up from the Shure and Ortofon cartridges, with the top end clarity AT is known for.  More "exciting" a presentation than the Grado, but also found some surface noise the others didn't.  Cost - $119 (sale).

Each of the cartridges brought something different to the table.  Both vintage and inexpensive cartridges like the Shure and Ortofon provide plenty of value, and are great for a starter or budget system.  It wasn't tested here, but the Audio Technica AT-3600L is also a great budget cartridge, especially for classic rock.

However, spending the extra scratch to move up to the Grado or AT is certainly worth the spend.  Although not part of this shootout, an Ortofon OM-10 would also be worth the jump in price if you're looking for something a bit more dynamic than the Grado but not as exciting as the AT.

Cheap Cartridge SHOOTOUT!

  Much more recently, I’ve had a Gold2 and a Statement Platinum2, both mounted on my MoFi Ultradeck. Both tracked well (confirmed with a test record). Both sounded really good running into my Sutherland Insight phono stage.  I’m a super heavy spinner so I decided to buy the Gold3 and return to a cartridge with a user replaceable stylus, which the Statement Platinum2 lacks

 It’s still running in and I’m shocked how amazing this is for $260. Rock, jazz, EDM, classical- it does it all brilliantly.  If you know and like the Grado sound, you’ll love this. If you don’t know the Grado sound, they sound more like real music than most cartridges I’ve heard

And oh my god, it did. As much as I am not a fan of foam pads on Grado or Koss headphones, the foam on these is much softer and smoother to the touch. It’s very comfortable, and makes them sound a lot better.

So right after I posted about my Grados, I got a notification from Aliexpress that my Monks finally arrived. 

First things first, they came in a literal meme-laden weed bag, which is hilarious. I put them in without the foam at first, and was quite disappointed. I just took off the Grado SR60e, and the sound out of these didn’t impress me in the first 30 seconds. 

Then I decided to put on the foam, just to see if it changes anything. 

And oh my god, it did. As much as I am not a fan of foam pads on Grado or Koss headphones, the foam on these is much softer and smoother to the touch. It’s very comfortable, and makes them sound a lot better. 

So, how do they sound?

It’s fitting that they came on the same day as my Grados, as I would legitimately call the Monks a Baby Grado. There isn’t a ton of bass, but the mids are wonderfully clear and resolving and the treble is detailed, but never sharp or annoying. They are a very relaxed headphone, I could listen to them for hours - partly because of the sound, partly because of the unbelievable comfort. 

But I’m not done yet. The best part about the Monks? 

THERE’S SOUNDSTAGE. It’s barely, if at all, narrower than the Grado. You hear sounds all around your head. It’s ridiculous that a €5 pair of earbuds that look as if they came for free with a crappy MP3 player can soundstage so well. 

Honestly, for €5, I believe everybody should own a pair of these. Whether you’re an experienced audiophile who doesn’t believe you can get quality sound so cheap, or a newbie looking for a starting point, go to AliExpress, search for VE Monk Plus, and prepare to have your mind blown. After two weeks to a month. 

What they say is true. These are incredible value. They actually dethroned Koss Porta Pro as my favorite budget headphone. I would rate their sound similarly, they both have their flaws - Porta Pros have too much bass and too little top end, while the Monks have too little bass. 

But you know what? At 1/6th of the price of the already ridiculously cheap Porta Pros, they are allowed to. Absolute killer value.

Best of the cheap chi-fi earbuds. Most of the others can't play loud without distorting. I have many pairs laying around. But rarely use them anymore after buying Koss Porta Pro and KPH30i. I suggest buying extra foams for them, since they get bad pretty fast. I've owned all the cheap earbuds I could find on aliexpress/ebay and on forums. Gave most of them to friends and family for free. Most of them distorted when playing high volumes. These are the ones I recommend the most.

 My previous entry MM cartridge AT95E has a similar weight, compliance, size, and output voltage. The matching has no issue at all.  The sound was broader and more transparent than before. I do love the high pitches of the new cartridge

I guess I need to get into headphones to get this better.  I've been an IEM guy for more than a decade and have never compelled myself to get into the "big" stuff.  I'm a big Audio Technica, Ultimate Ears, and JVC fan.

If I'm reading this right...

Beyerdynamics has fast decal and poor note body/texture.  You get great separation but no sense of space.  IEMs have long had this problem with balanced armatures.  Too fast decay sucks away a lot of the presence.  It's incredibly rare to ever have a BA based IEM have good note body and texture.  Some can have good thickness/weight, but there isn't anything quite like a dynamic driver.  It's also a real shame when a dynamic driver gets it bad.

Sennheiser is good overall with note body and texture to actually be aware of the music space, plus good separation, yada yada.  I liked their IE8 IEM back in the day, but it didn't do sound stage well, only did big and distant and had zero intimacy.

AKG sounds like it's outdoors?  Too open I guess.  My brother has the K701, and I've always thought they were...ok, had some great qualities but also some major shortcomings.  It was never one I'd personally own.  It's just a compromised thing.

Audio Technica does have a mid-centric tone that seems to focus on female vocals, at least for IEMs.  The drum blur I assume means muddy bass.  Do their full sized headphones have problem with poor damping, motor strength, lack of excursion?

Grado colored I assume.  EQing can be a godsend with this type of product, especially if the sound quality is very good.

Sound signature

 People talk about hum with Grados mounted on Rega turntables. The hum occurs when the cartridge is in the lead out grooves and is not noticeable while the music is playing. People who bring this up and make an issue of it are making something out of nothing.

Finally piecing together my first real higher end setup and have decided on a Rega P3. Some of the reviews on the Rega Elys MM cart are underwhelming, so I’m wondering if anyone would recommend a better cartridge for the money (about $275).
