So, I've been looking into purchasing my first bass. I have no previous experience with stringed instruments (I play piano tho), but I'm well aware that my hands are quite small, and I assume that might cause me some technical challenges. That said, I know that standard-sized basses are way more common and if I ever decide to upgrade from a newbie instrument, I assume there are probably less options (or at least less budget-friendly ones) for a short scale bass than a standard one. Newbie - short scale or standard size?

  PICKUPS are pretty good, although the fabric wrap merely hinted at providing any protect to those teeny tiny 44AWG pickup wires: improved by removing wrap and sealing with liquid electrical tape. The pickups are mounted using only 2 screws - so they are wobbly: fixed by 3D printing a new 3-piece pick guard with 1 (top) + 2 (bottom) holes and a 1-to-2 hole 4-40 screw adapters (see pic). NECK is decent, but the fret ends are very rough: fixed by smoothing them down using a mildly abrasive rotary tool end. NECK NUT sucks, it is some kind of vibration dampening plastic! Fix: Replaced with a TUSQ blank - sounds a LOT better now

 If you are buying this for a beginner, then I suggest you have the following done before giving it to them: Replace strings (use regulars), adjust neck truss rod, adjust bridge height and (very important!) the string intonation. Optional: replace neck nut to increase string sustain.  INTONATION: except for the low E string I was able to adjust the bridge saddles for correct intonation, while not perfect, the low E is close enough to work with. ELECTRONICS: decent pots and switch, I did add an EMG After-Burner (had to route out a pocket for the 9V battery and PCB/SW circuit). PAINT: Really cheap, really really cheap and easily chipped or scratched. TUNERS: Not the worst, but could use an upgrade as they have a lot of play in them

Decent, inexpensive, short scale guitar, but needs some upgrades.

I’d say get him an Ibanez Mikro bass and put the lightest tapewound strings you can find on it, seems like the easiest playing combination.

So my kid (6 years old) asked me to teach him how to play the bass, after seeing me for hours and hours playing at home.

So I have been trying to "teach" him a few things, like doing plucking, showing that different strings make different sounds. Then doing plucking with a metronome on multiple strings. All in a fun way.

And he got really excited today when we learned how to play a super simplified version of highway to hell using a capo.

But as I told you, he's 6. My two bases (one AM PJ and one AM JB) are higher than him. I have to hold the instrument for him because it's too heavy, even when he's in a chair. He can't press the fretboard as he can't reach it and the tension is too strong for his little fingers.

So I started to think in a "kids" bass. I saw that Squier has some options pretty cheap. On the other side, I always thought that those "kids guitars" were a waste of money as they were mostly toys.

Also, I'm not a teacher, nor even an amazing player TBH, but it's fun to get these moments with him and I want to keep it going. Of course, if he keeps engaged longer, maybe even hiring a real teacher at some point.

My question is: should I aim for a kid's guitar? I would like to know people's experiences with this kind of instrument and situations like this. If you are a music teacher for young kids, I would \*really\* love your opinion =)

Children's bass guitar - worth it?

Awesome for the price, may need some fret edge filing.

I've been thinking of selling my current bass (Harley Benton pj-4 htr deluxe) to use the money to buy a short scale (maybe an Ibanez mikro?). 

My HB has 3.7 kg (which to my understanding it's quite light for a full scale bass) and it's quite neck heavy, which not only makes my cervical problems awaken, but my shoulder also starts hurting after a couple minutes of playing (not an uncommon thing, I also have problems with backpacks and such).

I also have an electric guitar (Ibanez grx70 a), which weights just 3.1 kg and it's well balanced. I can play this one for an hour or so without problems, so I guess the balance and the couple hundred grams make a huge difference. This got me thinking about buying a short scale.

My question would be, has anyone had a similar experience? Would playing a short scale be limiting in some way, or it's at best just a tone compromise? (though it's not like my Harley Benton has a particularly amazing tone) Also, if anyone knows about short scales what models would you recommend in a 200-300$ range?

Switching to a short scale to deal with back pain?

The reviews were right

 Five way switch for the lovely Ibanez Infinity pickups, so in positions two and four, you get single coil splits and a nice bit of twang. One volume, one tone, string through body, but what's quite cool is the low E string has a slightly longer scale, it's quite further back, sorry, so when you're down tuning it, it doesn't get all floppy and stuff, but what is cool with shorter scale guitars are the bends because the strings have a little bit less tension on them. I'm trying to use that quite a lot. They're not hard to play these little guys, people assume they'll be all dinky and hard to play, but they're so easy

They are pretty bad. They do not evenly adjust volume or tone but rather they do not do much for most of the travel they have and suddenly, just before the end, they change the volume or tone very abruptly. I want to upgrade to some pots with smoother and more even response. Second, I have no idea what strings I can put on this bass
