It's a little more tactical and a little more expensive than you're looking for, but when I was doing forestry work I really liked my Kabar Kukri machete. That thing would cut through 4" grape vines if you swung hard enough.

Looking for a high quality machete (e.g. Estwing, but for machetes) that I can use around my yard/property. The less tactical looking, the better. Needs to survive outdoor service, uv exposure/abuse and being left in a mud hole or dirt pile. I am a decent sharpener. Price range is $50-ish (is that enough?).

Major con is the handle. It is LOOSE, and it’s molded construction doesn’t allow me to tighten it.

Personally I would definitely go with the Kabar. They make quality stuff and the blade profile is a good utility shape while remaining strong.

What knife should I get next?

 Every single manufacture of these has this idiot habit of putting a hooked knob on the end of the handle. It's seemly a very smart idea. The blade bends forward and so without that knobbed-hooked pad it might swing off out of your hand when you cut with it. Ala, it's a safety feature

 Genuine Ka-bar. Is the handle well constructed? Yea. I have cleared two fields now of multiflora rose and other wood things. No issues with handle deterioration

  Is the blade good? Yea. I hit a rock with it a few times now cutting out the base of things. The rock did not survive. The blade did and remained sharp

 The only Kukri manufacture I am aware of to actually understand how to make these was Gerber. To my knowledge they stopped making them and I don't know why. The made the very best of the Kukris. The issue with this Kukri is the handle

  The only reason this is not 5 stars is because I don't feel I have fully tested her durability yet, though she seems mighty sturdy. Also, I like the style of the sheath, with its hanging D-ring swivel, but the blade cut through the stitching the 5th or 6th time I slid her in. I guess that's bound to happen eventually, but still.  For the price, if you are thinking about buying one, do it now

 Put a hatchet-like angle edge on the belly for chopping and splitting wood and the like, and left the inner swoopy part of the blade closest to the handle with the sharpest, finest edge for more delicate tasks like cutting rope or carving stakes and the like. This works great for me and allows it to remain versatile.  All in all, a great tool. It has ALMOST rendered my Gerber LMFII obsolete, but I just cant quite give up the ghost on that one due to sentimental reasons :) I like having both, plus a smaller pocket knife for fine work, but If I could only take one blade into the wilderness, it would be this one, with my edge modifications

Very good, but a few small details overlooked

 From the apex of the belly curve to the tip, this steel appears to not be hardened-at all. I know that the point of impact for chopping should be just south of the belly apex and on a traditional kukri, this is where one would strike with the knife. It appears to be similar on this. My friend didn't know and that would explain why the blade got messed up where it did

 The blade coating has held up perfectly to the abuse leveled so far.  The Kraton rubberized handle feels good at first just handling the knife, but it will cause blisters. If you intend to chop anything big, wear gloves.  The sheath is completely functional, no real complaints, but no significant compliments

 I got the Gerber gator junior first and bent the blade on a awkward swing to a 1 inch branch, the saw on the back was nice. After I did that I figured I better just spend the money and go with a brand that I know is good. One review I read said it that the grip is lacking because of its round shape which I can agree. I wound up hitting a log and it twisted on me but that could be due to the weight, it is heavy if you’re not use to using it

Even though this knife is a substantial piece of kit, it never got in my way. The sheath is designed with an articulated suspension that allows the blade to pivot on a metal D-ring, and it works impressively well in the field
