Quality construction, poor design

 There is a gap around the metal grinding head and the glass hopper that is large enough for full size beans to fall into. The only way to get them out is with tweezers or to remove the hopper and invert the entire machine to allow the beans to drop out. This really distracts from the overall impression of quality and not at all from what I have come to expect from Kitchen-Aide. I have e-mailed Kitchen-Aide and will follow up with their solution

 You can only adjust by half steps, so 7.5 it was. Everything was peachy keen for a while, and then the grounds became too coarse, so I changed my setting to 8 which was about right but a little too fine. I found that over time, the settings change quite a bit, so you have to use 7

Some people might prefer to use a sledgehammer, but I don't recommend that because although the machine is sturdy, it might not stand up to a sledgehammer's blunt force trauma. Better to shake it, and if anyone asks what you're doing, don't be embarrassed that you're rocking an appliance back and forth - simply tell them the truth: "I spent good money on these coffee beans, and I don't want them to remain stuck in the hopper

Highly recommended, but needs a removeable bottom

 Don't use it at all: you don't need it. Just pour the beans in the top, hold a paper filter underneath and turn the thing on. In 30 seconds, it's done. Take the filter with the ground coffee and put it into the coffee pot

It's a great product, but you need to adjust how you use it.
