The ability to sync audiobook and ebook progress is neat but its not a deal break (its caused me numerous headaches with amazon so ts not a must have just a nice to). Currently looking at the Kobo sage/libra 2 the paperwhite signature or the onyx leaf (basically 7-8 inch sweet spot for me).

A Kobo Libra 2 (7") is an obvious choice or, if you don't mind shorter battery life, the Kobo Sage (8"). Both are under $300 , have 32 gbs storage, waterproof, dark mode, comfort light, usb-c, hackable. These are eInk devices with Overdrive built in which works with Libby so you can borrow from the library easily. Kobos have a broad format list including epub and pdf.

It doesn't have great battery life but Kobo Sage is a flexible 8" device with Dropbox built in that makes uploading books a breeze. It has up-to-date specs ie usb-c, waterproof, Carta 1200 eInk screen, etc. It was my decision as "best".
