We're aware he could build something himself with wild specifications for better value, but again, price is really no object and we think it would be wiser if we simply went with something ready-out-of-the-box that comes with a warranty, that we could return if he has issues with it. 

He currently has a single desktop. He wants a laptop that basically functions as a desktop 90% of the time.

Our default choice for him is a max-spec 16-inch 2021 Macbook Pro, M1 processor, about $5200. He's intent on Alienware, though. Understandably better fps according to some sources, and has the PC Gaming Advantages, but seems less sturdy and less likely to last.
