Still, the Thermo Chill isn't tall enough or warm enough for some winter snowstorms or submersion in deep water. They are made for hiking and do this well, but they won't be a useful boot for those who need to trudge through deep snow to chop wood or shovel the driveway. And, we have concerns about the fabric eyelets that seem likely to break over time from cinching the laces down tight. But for winter hikers and others in temperate climates who want a good boot on a tight budget, these are what we recommend.

Merrell specializes in hiking footwear, so it should come as no surprise that their Thermo Chill is one of our favorite boots for winter hiking. The Thermo Chill takes a fairly standard hiking boot design and gives it a cold-weather treatment, with a taller-than-average shaft height (for a hiking design, that is), sturdy leather upper and waterproof lining, and proprietary 200-gram fill that kept us comfortable while hiking in temps ranging from the mid-teens to low 30s Fahrenheit. The roomy toe box pairs well with heavyweight socks (something a surprising number of boots don’t allow), and the boot has a decently light and nimble feel. All told, the Merrell Thermo Chill is a solid pick for long winter walks, hikes, and snowshoeing.

We love the Thermo Chill’s low profile for hiking, but it’s a sizable tradeoff in particularly snowy or cold conditions. The 200-gram insulation nicely balances warmth and ventilation when on the move but will leave you cold on frigid days and while doing low-output activities. Additionally, the low 6-inch shaft height means you’ll need gaiters in moderately deep snow. And it's worth noting that there are more performance-ready options on the market, including Salomon's X Ultra Mid Winter CS and Oboz's Bridger Insulated, although availability has been limited throughout the season thus far.  Surprisingly, it is very flexible. So, whenever you're running, you can run properly without putting too much strength on your ankles and, of course, on your knees. Another factor that contributes to the comfort level is, of course, the inner sole and, let me take it out, so you can actually have the visual of the inner sole. As you can see, it is actually very, very nicely shaped

 There are 200 grams of insulation here, so you have to keep that in mind all right. Let'S move on to the criteria, number two proofing and protection. Yes, these boots are waterproof. So, let's get that out of the way uh, nothing special! This is not a gore-tex

My feet get soaked

 I haven't been able to find a hole or bad seam anywhere. I knew these wouldn't be great for strenuous hikes and terrain, but they've been just fine until now. Please do something to fix this, Merrell. It's a decent boot otherwise

 I read many reviews before I purchased these that Merrell's quality and footwear construction has gone down considerably in recent years, and I'm sad to say those reviews must be correct. 

Update to my initial review:  I bought these 2 years and almost 3 months ago. This past weekend on a trip the waterproofing failed, and I'm deeply disappointed by this!!!! They're barely over 2 years old, in my 3rd winter with them, and they failed me on a cold hike in watery conditions. I EXPECT WATERPROOFING TO LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THIS!!!! I had wet feet and wet Smartwool socks for the remainder of the hike. That has NEVER happened to me before

Almost good, but not good longterm

 It feels like there is a lot of volume up in the toe area. It's normally not hard for me to find shoes and boots that fit. Also want to add that I appreciated Merrell's great exchange policy, you made it very easy to move down a size.

 However, the biggest problem is that there is a seam in the lining that cuts right across my ankle. Nine times out of ten, I come back from a walk or hike with a welt across the outside of my ankles. For that reason alone I would not recommend them or buy them again.

I bought these specifically for around town in and out activities. My full winter boots (also Merrell) are too warm and heavy for casual use so these fit the bill perfectly. The size is dead on, 10 1/2 fits as it should. Loosen the laces and wear mid weight merino wool socks for extended outdoor cold weather use
