Not that great, but small, can take a lot of power. Micca OoO - $99  u/joentell likes them. Skinny and tall. Perhaps not great speakers but easy to put places other speakers will not fit

, and these definitely need a small subwoofer to give you a full complement of sound, but these paired with a small 6.5" or 8" sub would sound much better than any "speaker in a box" computer setup. These would also make some pretty nice and tiny surround speakers or atmos surrounds. Overall, for $100, these are a pretty good deal

These little speakers feel a touch smaller than their older cousins, the MB42x. They are definitely skinnier and a lot more desk friendly. In terms of sound, they have a nice, smooth top end, and a reasonable amount of bass for their size. The midrange feels recessed, quiet, reserved, etc

 But my MB42x pair sound so bad I still think something must be wrong with them. These don't have the scaldingly bright tweeters of the MB42x which is a welcome change.  I think to do much better at this price you'd need to go used, which is usually a far better value anyway but takes more time and effort to shop for. The step-up model RB42c is also nice, but slightly more than twice the size and twice the price

 These would also make some pretty nice and tiny surround speakers or atmos surrounds. Overall, for $100, these are a pretty good deal. Sure, you can spend less and still have something listenable or a lot more and have way better performance, but these are a nice entry in the small-but-good category.  Compared to the MB42x, these sound better overall, though the midrange is better on the MB42x

 No low-end extension. High end, though adequate for casual listening is not extremely refined and possibly disappointing for the critical ear, lacking ‘air’ in the upper register.

Had the Creative T40-s2 PC speakers in a tiny lab at work, liked the MTM design and sound signature at lower volumes for a small space. Started the year building a proper mini hi-fi set up with the OoOs as the stereo pair as I needed a small footprint to fill a small room (8x12’). These have a surprising amount of mid/low-end punch when paired with a capable amp (Onkyo A-933 100w/ch class-D)

 I have had small Polks and B&Ws run out of Denons and Marantzs at various points in my life, these are as nearly capable speakers as those mid priced bookshelf’s mentioned that one can build a low cost bedroom hi-fi with a decent 50W/ch amp-DAC combo. Downsides: vinyl “woodgrain finish” wrap & shallow banana plug terminals, little annoying workmanship details. No low-end extension. High end, though adequate for casual listening is not extremely refined and possibly disappointing for the critical ear, lacking ‘air’ in the upper register

Small but nearly full range sound

 I got these setup right under the TV in that small shelf and the sound great along with my Polk subwoofer. With my new reciver, I will get another pair and lay them flat on top of the two shelf towers next to the TV stand to serve as height channels. That will give me a 4.1

It's been 20 years since I've given any thought to an audio system, so I'm pretty behind the times. Should I keep it simple with an edifier that has a sub output? Or look for a cheap used 90's receiver? If I get a cheap Amazon 2.0 amp, can I add a powered sub to it later?

I'm in a rural area, my used options are very limited. I have no problem ordering off eBay, Ali, or any other legit site.

Maybe consider the Klipsch R-41M?  They're $100 on Amazon, but they go as low as $70 on sale.  I've had mine for a couple weeks and I'm a fan.  They definitely lean bright, but it still sound great across the range with alot of presence in the mids and highs.   They're not as bassey as my larger bookshelves, but what can you expect for a 4" woofer?  

I've never heard them, but the youtuber Joe N Tell is a big fan of Micca OoO's.  They're 4" wide when stood vertically.

Best small sub-$100 speakers?

This sound great with my 15 watts-per-channel amp pushing them and they're narrow enough to fit on a desktop where space is limited. My only gripe is the cabinet finish. It looks like cheap shelf paper. And even worse, where black is the dominate color for audio equipment, they went with brown?! Love 'em anyway
