 It says it'll burn 136 minutes on 20 ounces of fuel. So this is a 20 ounce fuel bottle and it is completely full. So theoretically over two hours of on high boiling with this stove. With this amount of fuel it's very reliable

 It's designed to work in any kind of conditions, to be very reliable, and to be very easy to fix. It's very easy to maintain out in the field. It's designed to function flawlessly in almost any conditions. It's very simple to use, and these are all the reasons that not only myself, but many, many other people, thousands and tens of thousands of people have loved this stove over the years

 So about fifty sixty dollars you can get yourself one of these and be up and running very quickly. Let's take it outside. I I am brave with a lot of stoves on starting them indoors, but this particular white gas stove I'm not going to. I just don't like the procedure as far as putting it

 But do I see myself using this stove a lot? Personally? Me: no, I don't see myself using it very much. Bottom line is is that I'm not a mountaineer. I live at sea level or less. In some cases, we walk around below sea level at times

Is The MSR WHISPERLITE Still the GOLD STANDARD of Liquid Fueled Camp Stoves?

I'm a wild camping backpacker. Grab a pack and just walk on out into the wilderness. I'm tired of freeze dried/dehydrated meals soaked in boiling water out of a bag.

I'm currently lusing an MSR jetboil or a fuel canister with a burner screwed on top depending on the trip and it's great for coffee, not so great for real cooking. Especially if I'm taking a 6 year old who doesn't drink coffee. 

What do you use that can handle a pan/skillet/hot cooking thing for 2 (maybe 4) people. I've seen loads of camping stoves that are within a weight I'm not opposed  to carrying if they get the job done but it's the size that puts me off, they're the size of a small oddly shaped briefcase and that's way to much of my bag. And I'm hoping for lighter too, just with a more stable (wider) cooking surface and that folds down. All those tiny cheap screw in burners except way wider and with feet. That's all I'm hoping for at a minimum, bonus if it has some shielding around it from the wind. Can't hurt to ask right. 

Leave no trace means no campfire so that's not an option. 

Next part is what can I put supplies in that will keep it cold? Again, expecting a range of 1 maybe 2 nights for this, I'm hoping for extreme technology not miracles. Meat the first night, then something safer like maybe a soft cheese or a precooked dish the second night. I've found loads of basic cold bags but I'm hoping for some crazy science stuff here, I know it might cost a chunk more than a normal cold bag.

A Stove With a Learning Curve

 Universal So what's gonna? Thanks for the folks at MSR for sending me this and so I could kind of play with it, learn about it, and hopefully share some of that experience with you. So if you're looking for a stove for your emergency preparedness to, maybe to make sure you can cook some of that emergency food you've got, you want to make sure you got got all your fuel bases covered I Think this could be a really, really good choice for you. so I hope that's been helpful as always. Thanks for watching on purpose! I Put out a brand new video every Friday and Saturday and sometimes random videos throughout the week

 Now you see it rolling in there. Okay, every good. let's turn it off. set this off to the side

 all the pieces. I Just take it and drop it back down in there and then screw this in place. like so tighten it up like so and you can hear it shaking. You hear that that's the shaker jet

 like so got a couple of over rings there. Take the plastic one for the caster, push it right in and do the same, then just thread it on. once this all the way on and just tighten your lock nut down. That's step one

Camping Stove or Emergency Stove? The MSR Whisperlite Universal Is Both

 durable. compact and uses white gas. (I'm not a fan of butane. yet) And I've had a MSR 20 oz fuel bottle for as long as I can remember that filled my lantern and other stove that we're about to talk about

 I should've done more research on the size and weight of this new Whisperlight because my 442 has it beat. The Whisperlight pack size (with the bottle you need to run it) is bigger and when you add a 20oz full bottle it weighs more. And I don't have to assemble my 442 to use it. So I am open to suggestions and reasons why I should like this new MSR Whisperlight over my 442

 packs small. has its own built in tank and NEVER has let me down. I should've done more research on the size and weight of this new Whisperlight because my 442 has it beat. The Whisperlight pack size (with the bottle you need to run it) is bigger and when you add a 20oz full bottle it weighs more

Disappointed

 They also give you this little tool here which enables you to quickly change out the valve simply by unscrewing it here and then on the bottom. Here you simply just take the fuel cup off, you take the little wick off, and then this part pops out and there's your jet. So you would just change this jet by simply unscrewing it with the tool here and then you could put whatever jet in there that you are going to use depending on the fuel setup that you're going to use. But today we're going to use the white gas

 That's where fuels like white gas in these, where you can pressurize yourself work much better in the cooler temps or at altitude where the pressure is a lot lower. So in the kit here you have a windscreen. This definitely helps out, maintains you know efficiency for your stove and makes it you know, boil your water that much faster. You have the pump system here that goes into the canister and then we have the stove itself

 The system cools down really fast - I'm already able to touch these feet here and it's been two minutes since I turned off the stove so that's cool. Takedown is basically the exact same thing in: Reverse Just pop this little clip off my valve here. Go ahead and just pull my gas right out of the valve here. Now you want to unscrew this slowly? obviously because if it's still pressurized, you don't want to have this thing go crazy on you

 So the like the stove. You just want to turn the canister on a very little bit until you get a very little amount of gas built up in the little cup here and then you can light it. It'll burn off that gas for a while a few minutes and then you can add more fuel into the mix and it will ignite just like a regular. you know, butane stove would now somehow I made it out here today without a lighter

MSR WhisperLite Universal Stove Review

 If your pot is wider, it will hopefully be more stable on the stove, if your pot is this size or smaller, I would consider some other options (among them one the other WhisperLite models).

Consider A Different WhisperLite Model

I have used many backpacking stoves over my time and I use this model as the base to compare and contrast with every other white gas stove on the market.  I have cooked hundreds of meals on the trail and from an economic/weight factor, this stove is probably the lightest and least expensive to operate for large group outings (6+ people)  I have torn it apart in the field several times if there were any issues.  i have had problems in the past with the pump assembly leaking and catching fire!  I have seen one go up in flames and a friend has a similar experience. (If that happens to you and it burns out of control, flip the fuel bottle upside down and that seems to eliminate the out of control burning flame)

A base constant for all other stoves

 The cans are faster too since you don't need to pump. I prefer camping in the cold months and there's nothing like hot food and coffee/tea when it's freezing.

Old Reliable

 It must be purchased separately and costs from $11 to $22 depending on the size you want. The picture is a bit misleading and subsequent purchasers should be advised the fuel bottle is not included in the purchase price. That said, the stove seems to be well made for its stated purpose. I have not been able to actually use it yet because I am waiting for the fuel bottle (purchased separately) to arrive
