 That's a really nice tone, neck pickup rolled halfway down, yeah there's a lot happening there, which is super cool, Rohan what overdrive does the Gilmor and the Edge use, everything, over the course of their careers those guys have used everything from just the amps, the reality is most of the time when you're hearing, especially stuff from the 70s, you have to remember there weren't many options available, especially in the overdrive market, pedals weren't really that big of a thing at that time, so probably using, Gilmor for example was really reliant on fuzz faces, tone benders, color sound power boosters, because that's what was available to them at that time, it's not like it is today, it's not like you can just jump on Sweetwater or Reverb or Humbucker or whatever and have your pick of 2000 different overdrive pedals. And the other thing you have to keep in mind too about overdrives, my friend Jared Scharf has an interesting take on this, which is he actually hates overdrive pedals, he swears them off completely, which I don't 100% agree with but I understand his point, which is the sound that we're going for when we're using these overdrive pedals in front of an amp, for the most part you're trying to imitate an actual amp breaking up, which I agree with him and so his point is why use an overdrive pedal when you can just use a boost in front of a really great amp and get that natural quote unquote overdrive from a set of tubes, and I agree with him to that point but I also understand that it's not always feasible to push an amp, I mean if you've got a 20 watt amp to push it to overdrive on its own with a boost pedal or something, especially if an amp doesn't have a master volume, it's loud man, it's really really loud for most situations. So yeah, I mean to each his own, but oh yeah Trevor was just asking what's your take on pedal versus amp drive, I mean I like them both, it depends on the situation, so right now I'm using an AC30 profile in the Axe FX and you know, if I could have my druthers so to speak, to me the perfect sound is my early 60s grey panel AC30 pushed with a boost or a fuzz, that's the sound, but the thing is, you will go deaf if you're in the same room with that amp pushed to where it's overdriving that hard, to get this kind of sound out of my AC30 in the room, I mean it's painful, it's absolutely painful and I couldn't get away with that on most gigs, but I can get away with a slightly smaller amp or an amp run at a lower volume and hit it with an overdrive to get it to break up and clip. Also overdrives are great because they give you some EQ, some tone shaping options, at least good ones do, and that's one of my gripes with the Tube Screamer is it doesn't actually have that great of some tone shaping options, you have the tone control, but at least in my opinion it doesn't do all that much

Yeah there's a few, the MXR Timmy I think is really good from what I've been told, Zach at Mythos has told me that they're really good and I trust his opinion on this stuff, and I think those retail for around $100 new, which is pretty good

 I’d read many good reviews on the Timmy, but it’s nowhere near the Boss. Nice to have separate bass & treble controls, but the distortion just isn’t all that great.

 Man, so many good tones in this, it's kind of hard to choose. I sort of like them all. So the thing I like about this cut only control in the bass and treble is that it makes it really easy to switch this from an overdrive to just kind of a light boost. So let me pull back that gain and put the bass and treble at around six and bring up the volume and see what I mean

 Let's go ahead and put on some full-on humbuckers and show you what that does. So let me just show you with humbuckers. Okay

 So what I like about this is that it allows you to kind of tailor the pedal towards what guitar you're playing. So in keeping with that, let me go ahead and switch over to some mini humbuckers so you can hear that option. Then we'll go to full humbuckers later on. So now I'm playing this Gibson Les Paul Music City model with mini humbuckers in it

First Look - MXR Timmy Drive

My small but versatile "ampless" pedalboard

  Now - if you are a bedroom player none of this may bother you and if you're OK with mini pedals, then buy this one. Otherwise you might be better off with a full sized Timmy.  Sounds great! - difficult to use in live situations. = 4 stars

 While you can drive it into the "distortion" category I use it as a clean "clean boost" pedal, of which I have several different clean boosts I can compare it with some others. The Timmy sounds great, and if you're looking for a pedal in this territory you owe it to yourself to give it a try.  I frequently play on stage live and thats where the troubles start. I want to be able to "fine tune it" throughout a set based on the room, the amp, and/or guitar I'm playing

Sounds great but four knobs on a mini pedal is too tight for me.

 It's not going to be like crazy high-gain, but it's definitely going to be very, very crunchy and very mid-level gain. There's going to be a lot of gain, and we're going to use the Timmy to boost the front end and goose it, and we're going to turn down the gain, and we're probably going to turn down the low end, I'm suspecting, and play with the clipping and see what sounds and reacts best. Still using the Les Paul standard, let's boost a Friedman Mini JJ. Let's see how it sounds

So, now that we have heard the Timmy in the way that it is meant to be used, let's use it in a way that it's not necessarily meant to be used, and we're going to boost the front end of a Friedman Mini JJ amp and kind of use it in a high-gain setting

 The MXR Timmy sounds better in all respects to me than the Pure Sky - sometimes subtle, but somehow fuller and more musical. The Caline pedal is 90% there and is a cheap way to experiment with the concept of a Timmy. But the MXR is definitely a better pedal. For the record I'm playing into a Fender 65 PRRI with a 12" speaker (Emi Josh Smith)

 So let's try that real quick, we'll go to right about here on the drive. If we brought the bass all the way down, bring it all the way up. Definitely a little muddy for my taste, but we'll bring that back down just right there and then we'll do the same thing with the treble, half way. Go all the way up

 So here's the clean tone, we're using the Music Man through an AC style amp. Gain all the way up, let's try that again. Let's go to, let's put the gain right there. Switch all the way to the left now and kind of see what that sounds like

 So you can hear that treble really adds. Man, bridge pickup on a Strat, that could maybe shatter glass, make your ears bleed, I don't know, one of the two probably. But right there is about where I'm liking it, back off the bass a little bit, maybe add a touch more treble. So then if you even gave it a little more gain, it's going to be a pretty sweet lead tone also

 Let's go to, let's put the gain right there. Switch all the way to the left now and kind of see what that sounds like. Go to the middle, let's go to the right, let's go back over to the left here. Go to the middle and to the right

 The middle position provides a symmetrical clipping with light saturation, high headroom and high definition and the right position provides symmetrical clipping with heavy saturation and low headroom. So let's start with our bass sound and then we'll go through each of those clipping modes so you can kind of hear the difference and then we'll get a couple different sounds out of it. So here's the clean tone, we're using the Music Man through an AC style amp. Gain all the way up, let's try that again
