If zoom range is your biggest priority, check out the Nikon COOLPIX P1000. It's notably bigger and heavier than the Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 II, making it a bit cumbersome to carry around. However, with a whopping 125x zoom, it has the longest zoom range of any fixed-lens camera on the market. The built-in lens can reach a max 3000mm focal length (full-frame equivalent), allowing you to zoom in incredibly close or snap photos of very far-away subjects. The camera features good optical stabilization to reduce camera shake, though you'll still need to use a tripod and a remote shutter when shooting at the ends of its focal length range. Unfortunately, its autofocus system is sluggish and unreliable. While you can take burst photos at a speed of 7 fps to capture fast movement, it only shoots bursts of seven images at a time, which can slow you down when timing is critical. Still, it delivers good overall image quality, particularly when shooting outdoors in brighter conditions.

Get the Panasonic if you want a more practical and versatile bridge camera. If you need an incredibly long zoom range, go with the Nikon.

The Nikon COOLPIX P1000 is the bridge camera to buy if you're looking for sheer zoom range. Its built-in lens has a remarkable 125x zoom, allowing you to zoom in to a maximum full-frame equivalent focal length of 3,000mm.  I was in row 7, section 135, so I was pretty darn close to try and zoom in to get the batters in the batter's box to get the pitcher and work around all of the other people that were sitting there in the stands. If you like the quality, this is a point-and-shoot camera. So you can expect point-and-shoot quality out of it, but let's look at the physical camera itself

 Hundred thousand dollars zoom on it. So that was something that blew me away and kind of said that this is a modern-day camcorder. My dad wants to get a camera for my mom for Christmas, and he's turned to me, but I'm not sure what to recommend. So, I'm hoping Reddit can help! She wants a camera with some zoom capabilities, and good at night. I'll put full details in the text. Thanks in advance if you take a moment to help!

 This is typical of this camera and demonstrates the poor quality typical of full zoom. I have included a shot farther away as a reference.  EDIT: DO NOT USE A UV FILTER, IT REDUCES THE IMAGE QUALITY SIGNIFICANTLY.

I am looking for a camera that will allow me to zoom in and get some close up pics of the birds and small critters in my yard.  I would also like to use it for landscapes, sunsets and as an all round travel camera.

I currently have a Nikon D3200 with the kit lens and a 50ml prime, and an old Panasonic Zoom which is too slow now.  One option is to get  a zoom lens for the D3200, but I think I want the point and shoot in order to just pick up the camera when opportunity arises.  I have lost opportunities while switching lenses on the Nikon, and because the Panasonic is too slow.

The choices are overwhelming.   Do you have one that you care to recommend?

Can you recommend a superzoom? Would like to take pictures of wildlife, landscape and use as a travel camera.

 I really am disappointed to be saying this. I wanted to give it five stars and rave about it, but I just can't.  I had a VERY difficult time keeping the lens on my subject when using the telephoto. I knew that it would be hard, but it was frustratingly difficult; to the point that I just started taking random pictures hoping that some of them would be framed properly.  The goods news: it does take great pictures. You just have to be able to deal with walking around with a five pound ham with a five foot stick poking out of it!  Just fyi I have been taking photos for 59 years so I know a little about working a camera

WAY TOO BIG

my little one likes to put her toy cameras next to mine...I would love to introduce her to the Ninon world, what would be a good kid (7 years) entry camera that could last a few years?

 The menu options are much more limited than the DH-4 but the most-used features are there, and are easily accessible. I would like to have more than one "Fn" button for quick access to menu items, but that's a small nit. There are physical buttons for exposure compensation, self-timer, focus mode, and flash settings. The manual focus works very easily, and I found it really handy at the long zoom settings

Overall, it's well done, with obvious design sacrifices for the enormous zoom range. I'm sure my DH-4 will remain my primary camera, but this Nikon seems to fulfill its main purpose quite well

 (I took one star off for its bulk)  Side note -- I'm not sure most people will find the extra zoom power over the earlier P900, which has a 2000mm tele, worth the several hundred dollar premium for the P1000. Plus the 1000 weighs an extra pound or so. What swung it for me was the RAW capabilities of the P1000, plus a few other features that a lot of folks might not care about.

I've had this camera for two days now and have worked thru the 175-page manual, so I feel safe posting some initial thoughts. First impression: it's BIG, and it's heavy. It is half-again bigger and heavier than my Lumix GH-4. But the Lumix doesn't have a 3000 mm zoom lens, which is the Nikon's raison d'être

Don't fear the P1000...  Seems to be a great camera. Many users just need to learn how to use it

But if you try to get a lens that does both, it's going to be expensive and big, even for a smaller sensor. It's why the Nikon P1000 is such a hulking big camera for a 1/2.3"-format sensor. But something like a Panasonic FZ1000 or Sony RX10 series can get you a lot of zoom with a 1" sensor and decent low-light capability; while a Sony RX100 or Canon G7 X series is more pocketable and good for closer subjects in low-ish light

I have enjoyed doing photography on my phone, but often I hit a roadblock because the subject is too far away, or it's dark outside. So I decided to take a look at some dedicated cameras, but I feel like I'm no smarter after reading the FAQ. I even learned what how DSLRs, Mirrorless and point&amp;shoots work, but still have no idea what to get. At home I found some old &lt;2010 cameras, but those are worse than my phone.

So assuming that my budget is around $500, it seems like the FAQ suggests a Cyber-shot DSC-RX100,  Nikon D3500 or Alpha 6000, or similar. But which of those would best suit my needs then? All I understand is that if I want lenses, I can't get the P&amp;S.
