The Nikon Z 50 is the best mirrorless camera that we've tested for beginners. This entry-level mirrorless camera has a fairly compact, lightweight body, styled similarly to a more conventional DSLR, but on a smaller scale. It feels comfortable to use, with a deep handgrip and well-spaced controls. Its menu system is also very intuitive, and there's a built-in guide mode to help explain the function of different features. Its tilting screen also makes it easier to take pictures from unconventional angles. While its battery life isn't especially long, it supports USB charging while in use, which is handy if you have a mobile battery pack.

This camera's 20.9 MP APS-C sensor has a lower resolution compared to some other alternatives, but this doesn't keep it from capturing impressively sharp JPEG images out-of-the-box. If you want to try your hand at shooting RAW, you'll find that images are also low in noise, even when shooting at higher ISO levels in darker environments. Its maximum continuous shooting speed of 11 fps when using its electronic shutter will make it easier to snap clear stills of fast-moving subjects, but unfortunately, it clears its image buffer quite slowly, so it's best to keep continuous bursts very short.

It's also worth noting that there's no in-body stabilization system, which can make it a little harder to capture clear, shake-free shots when shooting at slower shutter speeds. Its autofocus system can also behave a little inconsistently when tracking faces. Still, if you're looking for a fairly portable camera that delivers great image quality and feels comfortable to use, this is one of the best cameras for beginner photographers.

The best digital camera that we've tested for beginners is the Nikon Z 50. This entry-level mirrorless camera uses an APS-C sensor and feels very comfortable to shoot with. It has a highly intuitive menu system with a guide mode to explain settings to new users and well-spaced controls with a comfortable handgrip. It's also fairly lightweight and relatively portable.

Overall, it delivers impressive image quality with a good amount of dynamic range, which helps take photos of landscapes or other high-contrast scenes. It has great noise handling capability at higher ISO levels, meaning it's fairly well-suited to shooting in low light despite its sensor size. It also shoots at a quick 10 fps in its high-speed continuous shooting mode, so you can take bursts of fast action, though it has a long buffer empty time if you manage to fill up its photo buffer.

Unfortunately, its autofocus system lags behind some competitors. While it supports eye detection and has 209 advertised focus points, it only does an okay job keeping moving subjects in focus. It also lacks in-body image stabilization, but its optically stabilized kit lens does a good job of reducing camera shake when taking photos handheld. Overall, this is a well-designed and fairly well-rounded entry-level camera, making it a good choice for beginners.

If you'd prefer a camera that's easier to use, take a look at the Nikon Z 50. It's not as portable as the Sony &alpha;6400, and its autofocus system isn't as reliable at tracking moving subjects. However, it feels more comfortable to use and has a much more intuitive menu system and user interface. Its controls are well-spaced, and the menu includes a guide mode to explain certain camera functions to novice users. Its touchscreen can tilt and flip out to help you shoot from different angles. Image quality is great overall thanks to its 20.9-megapixel APS-C sensor, which has a good dynamic range and impressive RAW noise handling capability, so it should perform well even at higher ISO settings in low light. That said, there aren't as many lenses available for Nikon's Z-mount compared to Sony's E-mount, although you can buy an adapter and use Nikon F-mount lenses as well.

Get the Sony if autofocus performance and portability are priorities, but if you're looking for something a little more user-friendly, the Nikon is a great alternative.

This camera also lacks in-body image stabilization, though its optically stabilized kit lens does a good job of steadying the camera for handheld shots. Overall, this is one of the best beginner cameras we've tested, and it's a great budget option for those interested in low-light photography.

Its battery life is also mediocre, although this can vary with settings and usage habits, and you can't use it while charging. Still, this entry-level sibling to the more advanced full-frame Nikon Z 6 II is a solid choice for beginners looking to get their hands on a mirrorless camera.

The best mirrorless camera under $1,000 that we've tested for beginners is the Nikon Z 50. This entry-level crop-sensor model feels well-built and is very comfortable to use, with a substantial grip suitable for most hand sizes and physical controls that are easy to adjust. It has an intuitive menu system, including a guide mode to walk new users through its core settings and features. It lacks a fully-articulated screen, but its touchscreen can tilt outward or flip up to face you for selfies or vlogging.

Overall, its image quality is impressive. Photos have a good dynamic range and look incredibly sharp even at higher ISO levels. It doesn't have the most reliable autofocus system, but it's solid enough for most uses, and the camera has an excellent sensor that punches above its weight when it comes to noise and low-light shooting. It even has some degree of weather sealing to give you more peace of mind when shooting on rainy days. Its controls and menu system are intuitive, and the camera takes beautiful photos. It also has excellent noise handling for trickier lighting conditions.

While it has a solid AF system that'll get the job done in most situations, the similarly-priced Sony &alpha;6400 has a slightly more reliable autofocus system. Both are top-notch entry-level cameras, and you can't go wrong with either, but the Sony doesn't handle nearly as well as the Nikon, with worse ergonomics and a hard-to-navigate menu system. If you're more style-conscious and willing to stretch your budget a little, the Nikon Z fc is also a great option that brings the nostalgia factor. It's one of the best-looking cameras on the market, designed after the vintage Nikon FM2 film camera.  This Nikon Z 50 is small. It's tough and it connects really easily with my phone. And even though this camera is small, it uses the same lens mount as the other Z series cameras. Big Mount means more light, which means faster focusing, sharpness, contrast, low light performance, and in general, just better image quality

 The ergonomics are great. And to just have as a walk around camera, the quality is more than good enough in every circumstance that we've discovered so far. So let's go take some more photos of the impossibly blue water here. It's the middle of the day and it is not traditionally a great time for photography that kind of 12 noon ish sun

 And I feel like as somebody that speaks to a camera and self films that I'm more looking directly at the lens when I'm looking kind of below the lens to see my framing rather than off to the side. I've noticed that a lot of my videos when I'm self filming that I'm kind of looking off over here and I feel like this keeps me a little more centered, just kind of looking directly into the camera. And for hand placement, like it just feels kind of good like this. I honestly feel like it's better than the side flip

 We're going for a walk over there and then over there. It's a nice light. As someone that's traditionally a little more of a timid street photographer, this camera really fits my style. It doesn't attract a lot of attention and gives me the image quality that I would expect from a professional Nikon camera, but at an incredibly reasonable price point

The Nikon Z 50 was a surprise. I picked this camera up as a walkaround camera, to fill the gap between using my full Nikon Z 6 kit, and my phone. The Nikon Z 50 delivers quality far beyond what I expected, while maintaining a small size, and great ergonomics. My favourite feature is how easy it connects to my phone. While traveling, it is incredibly easy to have instant access to all of my files on the camera.

When traveling, it’s also great that I can recharge it easily by USB.

  There are two areas where the Z50 slightly disappoints. One is in the optics/diopter for the EVF. The +/- adjustment clicks seem to miss where my eyes are at and for me the EVF is never 100% in focus. I also notice some lack of uniformity in the EVF clarity going from left to right

 But at this price point $1K you should be getting a lens more like a Fujinon 18-55 f2.8-f4 which is arguably the best kit lens going. Nikon missed the opportunity to check all the boxes here by doing a kit lens that more serious/experienced photographers on a budget/family would go for.  Z 50 will sell a lot

 Sure, kinda makes sense. But the i-nformation popup is not clear enough to not have made me spend a full minute trying to figure this out.  My main disappointment is with the lens. The zoom throw is good, its pretty short to go from wide to sorta-tele

 And honestly, the image quality from this is pretty good when recording 4K despite the crop. I don't think this is a camera you're going to buy specifically for shooting video. But if you've got some DX lenses you want to use, shoot some video. I think this is the best option out there right now

8S lens, which is the full-frame 50mm for the Z mount to put on here as well. So right off the bat, one of my initial impressions using the camera is that they've done a very good job considering the price point. So first off, the Z50 with the 16-50 kit lens is just under $1,000 US. That is pretty impressive

The Z50 is Nikon's first Z-mount mirrorless camera with an APS-C sensor, and it launches alongside a pair of DX zoom lenses. Chris and Jordan had a chance to use a pre-production model and share their experience in this hands-on preview. 

**IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT 4K VIDEO** During our pre-announcement briefing with the pre-production Z50 used in this episode, we were given the impression that there would be a crop when shooting 4K video. It turns out that information is incorrect – there is no crop when shooting 4K video on the Z50.

Just arrived today, ain't she a beauty?

 Its also a smaller and more compact camera then the Nikon Z50. I find the photos, as compared to the Nikon, are nearly identical, with the Canon's offering slightly more resolution if you pixel peep. This is the effect of a 30+ Resolution sensor, vs, a 20+. The only thing i dont like about the Canon M6V2, is that you can't manually adjust the sharpness of the images

 The Nikon when set to "center point" focus, captures the entire frame as well as the focal point, better then the Canon. The Nikon does not allow you to change the focus point using the screen, while you look through the EVF. Both of these excellent cameras are fine shooters with world class IQ and color rendition, and do not disappoint.

 The Kit lens is very sharp. The body of the Nikon Z50 is metal but does not feel expensive. The Nikon has a wonderful front grip. Auto focus is sure and fast

 However, this is cool because it gives you access to all of the Z series lenses, as well as the FTZ adapter, which gives you access to any DX or FX full-frame F-mount lens. I don't know what the problem is with all the camera companies that don't want to just flip it out like Canon and Panasonic do. It really is the only way to go. It gives you a lot more options in terms of range

 They give you a lot of camera for a very reasonable price point, and in a few areas I think this actually exceeds what we're seeing with the Z6 and Z7. The autofocus is incredible on this, the low light performance is outstanding, and this is what I want to get into in this little review.  And once again, you're going to have to be really steady or use a tripod, and it just reduces a lot of what you're able to do with this camera without IBIS. And finally, and I know this is super picky, but there is no in-log or log profile for video footage on here. This is something I wish they could work out. It probably has something to do with the fact that in-log is a 10-bit profile, and this camera is just not capable of producing 10-bit video

I'm not really sure, but other APS-C sized cameras like Sony or even Fuji still find ways to put in log video. And so, the problem with Nikon is that I love the way the video looks on here, but some of the standard picture profiles are just too contrasty, they're too heavy-handed

The Nikon Z50 is the first DX mirrorless camera from Nikon. Its essentially a much smaller and compact version of the Nikon Z6. I've been shooting on this camera for a few weeks now and I'm extremely impressed. I really didn't expect this camera to be this good. The intention was to make a smaller mirrorless body at a lower price point as an alternative to the full frame cameras. Nikon did this but really didn't hold any features back - its VERY good.

Nikon also released 2 lenses - the NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR and the NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR. Both image quality and vibration reduction (image stabilization) are excellent on both of these lenses. At around $300 each they perform way above their class.

 How does my 7 year old camera hold more power is beyond me. But the very very worst feature of this camera is annoyingly idiotic flip screen. If you are like me, I love to leave my tripod attachment screwed in on the bottom of the camera to easily click in and out of my tripod. Well this camera decided to put the screen flip to the bottom making me take on and off this attachment and making things a hassle something that all other manufacturers took into account as their screen flips on ways that do get on the way

She wants to keep it simple and she doesn’t a whole lot of lenses to deal with. She wants to be able to do closeups and far away ( to a limit) and night pictures particularly of the moon. That’s hard to do for many as you know. Mom does not want to have a lot of things to deal with to take the picture. Any thoughts?"

My dad wants to get a camera for my mom for Christmas, and he's turned to me, but I'm not sure what to recommend. So, I'm hoping Reddit can help! She wants a camera with some zoom capabilities, and good at night. I'll put full details in the text. Thanks in advance if you take a moment to help!
