I had posted this to PCMR, but figured I'd post it here too if it can help anyone.

I've got a new build going on and wanted to get the best fans I could for my case and radiator. As well as just get up to date on the best fans in 2020 / 2021. I'm looking for the best performing/quietest fan out there. Noctua's really known for this which is why they're so popular. The problem is that there's so many fans to chose from and so much information out there.

There's also some decent misinformation too. Like some of Noctua's older fan designs like the NF-S12A don't really hold up anymore. Yet they're still so expensive and the poopy brown color still exists.

So, here's what I've found:

\*Again, this is the most powerful fan that is ALSO the quietest it can be. Also not looking at RGB fans here.

\- In general, it seems having static pressure is always better. There's lots of obstructions in PC cases, from grills, to cages, mesh, radiators, etc... It also seems that the air that gets heated up in your case also makes airflow fans and static pressure fans perform worse. But airflow fans usefulness degrades much faster. This means that airflow fans which perform better unobstructed could perform worse than static pressure fans when heat gets into the mix, even without obstructions. (There's a post here from buildapc linked down below that goes into some math)

\- The Noctua NF-12x25 PWM is the best fan you can buy right now (Whether using it as a radiator fan or case fan). But it's pricey.

\- The Arctic P12 &amp; P14 are the best overall fans. That includes price to performance. Honestly, these things are so evenly matched to the NF-12x25 it's hard to recommend the Noctua's considering the Arctic's are insanely cheaper. Getting down to $7-$10 a fan. If you're doing a huge build with 10 fans that's the difference of $300 or $70-$100 for basically the same performance. That's if you can find any to buy now anyways.

\- The Thermaltake Toughfan 12 is a blatant rip off of the NF-12x25 but it really matches the performance and comes in black, and it's a bit cheaper. But Thermaltake's kinda a crappy company.

\- The NF-12x25/P12/P14/Toughfan 12 perform so well on a radiator that they're even slightly better than or compare to something like a Noctua AF-A14 which is a 140mm fan.

\- There's also some other good fan contenders out there from Deepcool/Nidec but I'd avoid companies like Corsair/BeQuiet/Silverstone (Unless you have other plans, like aesthetics). Honestly with the Arctic P12/P14 and Noctua NF-12x25 you're pretty set.

\- In extreme cases/niche use cases you could probably see quite a big difference in temperatures from really bad fans to the best ones. But you can very easily see 3x cash savings getting something like the Arctic P12 over the NF-12x25 and see barely any performance differences.

\- Some people like to make a stink about the "type" of noise fans make, not just the loudness of the noise. And it's true some have more of a mechanical whine to them, or a higher pitch. But the Artic P12 and NF-12x25 seem like they don't suffer from that.

The best performing and quietest PC fans I've found

 But FWIW, even with my noise floor of 28 dB(A), I can still hear this fan at 6 meters, which seems to suggest that it's still over 28 dB at that distance. Would Noctua have used a distance as great as 10 meters?  But again, it's almost 39 dB(A) at 1m, and at that distance, the noise from NF-A12x25 PWM is significant. The noise signature makes it more noticeable because it's not just the white noise associated with rushing air. Instead, it has a prominent whine that my spectrum analyzer app shows to be 323Hz

I just feel like its a whiny fan. I think I like the noise signature of the old Noctua blade design better. This one may put up better numbers on a meter, but the numbers fail to reflect the real-world human experience.  On the plus side, it seems to move a fairly broad stream of air, which might make it desirable as an intake fan

 If the NF-A12x25 PWM actually was 22.6 dB at 1m, that truly would be approaching inaudible, even in a very quiet environment. Not as quiet as the price suggests

[FANS - RESTOCK, I GUESS] 5 x ARCTIC P14 PWM PST Value Pack 140mm fans [$44]

 Not only could I still hear a slight whooosh from the stock Corsair fans at their lowest controllable PWM speed, but the CPU temps floated at 47-52C idle. I tuned up my fan curves to keep things relatively quiet, but anything over 400rpm on the stock fans was audible.  Worse yet, when I blasted the CPU with some full load tests, the case damn near took off and flew out of the room. Temps settled at a max 72C, but the fan noise was punishing

Quietest Fan on the Market--PERIOD!

Riba's 14L N-ATX water-cooled build - 3700x + Vega64

 So the next step was the best air cooling solution I could find: The Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4. With my case the stock NF-a15 fans for that heatsink assembly wouldn't clear both the ram and the case side panel. Thanks to some reviews for this fan along with Noctua saying it was a compatible match, I decided to try these fans for the heatsink in order to keep the twin fan capability. I also opted to replace my (7) NF-A14 PWM case fans with (6) NF-A12X25 fans

  I couldn't stand the AIO pump noise from the NZXT Kraken x62 on my Ryzen 2700x build. After listening to a couple of other systems with the EVGA CLC280, Corsair H115, and H150 I determined that my ears are just tuned to pick up water pump noise. So the next step was the best air cooling solution I could find: The Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4. With my case the stock NF-a15 fans for that heatsink assembly wouldn't clear both the ram and the case side panel

Peerless performance and priceless value

I'm seeking ways to improve cooling of hard drives in a [DS380](https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/server-nas/DS380/).

I know it's not ideal for drive temps but I'm sticking to it and I reckon temps need to be between 5 and 10 degrees C lower.

For those who aren't familiar with the case, it has a drive cage that can take up to 8x 3.5 inch drives and 2x 120mm fans blowing air onto it.

I've already [drilled holes into the back of the drive cage](https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/silverstone-ds380-itx-8x-sas-sata-hotswap.3067/page-7) and it's possible to improve temps further using some [custom ducts](https://www.tindie.com/products/patshead/cooling-fan-duct-for-silverstone-ds380b-case/). There's also plastic ducts like [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Coolerguys-Thermal-Plastic-Electronics-92-120mm/dp/B00W8AMV5W), [this one](http://www.thermalright.com/product/120mm-fan-duct/) and [this one](https://www.moddiy.com/products/modDIY-120mm-Fan-Duct-Black.html).

I want to go beyond this with some further ideas:

* Replace the 120mm fans with something silent which blows more air.
* Add some feet to the case to turn it on its side so the air intake comes from the bottom and heat from the drives rises vertically. This would require adding a custom opening in the side panel on the top side.
* Evacuate heat from the sides of the drives passively through metal contact by finding some trays which can replace the plastic ones. I have found aluminium strips that are the right size but I'm not good with precision drilling to have the right screw holes.
* Some copper filling in the side openings of the drive cage to create a thermal conduit between the sides of the drives and the cage.

What ideas would work best in your experience?

I know this is tinkering but it's part of the challenge with compact data storage and hopefully someone here has given this some thought.
