I currently have a 4k Firestick and Panasonic 4K HDR/Dolby Vision TV, but the limited storage {constantly get messages about low storage and possible degraded picture quality and am struggling to find apps I want to delete) and Amazon’s constant ads and pushing of their own content is very distracting and the a,lint of data they can and do collect from me is something I want to avoid, so is the Shield TV Pro better in those areas and a kind of device that privacy-enthusiasts should go for?

Plus, the 4K and upscaling streaming quality is, I assume based on reviews and other Reddit threads, very close between both devices so that isn’t the deciding factor for me because I am expecting to not be able to tell a difference picture-quality wise especially for 4K content on streaming services.

So, I am mainly asking in relation to these features as gaming isn’t important to me as I a;ready have an Xbox One S.

Any helpful and objective advice would be greatly appreciated.

nVidia Shield TV Pro 4K vs. 4K Firestick: Which is better for privacy, security, customisation and streaming?

  I used an Ethernet cable for my original Shield, but with the new one I tried to use WiFi because I didn't want to run another cable. However I soon discovered that every 20 minutes or so my entire WiFi network would go down, disconnecting everything on the network, and then come back up by itself within a minute or so.  After searching for the problem on the internet I discovered this has been an ongoing problem beginning with the 2017 model, and unfortunately if it occurs there is no solution other than to use a wired connection, or try to buy a router that might work with it.  It appears it happens most frequently with ASUS routers, but it's really dependent upon the chipset a router uses, as well as the local WiFi environment, so others are affected as well

  ORIGINAL REVIEW: Now that I have my TV and AVR set up correctly the Shield Pro 2019 is awesome!  All of the apps work great, even Kodi with HD audio passthrough. The only thing that wasn't available in the Play Store was AT&T TV Now, but working APKs can be downloaded from XDA Developers. Just google for "The Ultimate DIRECTV NOW and FIRE TV APK Repository" and you'll find it quite easily.  The only caveat is that since HDR is still relatively new it can be difficult to set up your TV and AVR correctly for HDR, even for an embedded systems engineer with decades of experience like me

  So if you plan on using a wired connection it's awesome, but if you want to use WiFi you could be in for a world of hurt. Therefore I lowered my rating from 5 stars to 3.  ORIGINAL REVIEW: Now that I have my TV and AVR set up correctly the Shield Pro 2019 is awesome!  All of the apps work great, even Kodi with HD audio passthrough. The only thing that wasn't available in the Play Store was AT&T TV Now, but working APKs can be downloaded from XDA Developers

  So when I first received the Shield I couldn't get HDR to work without forcing the output to HDR, and even then it would only work at 30Hz. By the way, the reason I abandoned FireTV is because it doesn't support HD audio like DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, and I discovered that Amazon has no plans to ever change that. And having a beautiful 4K HDR picture without HD audio is, well, silly

WD TV live let me play video files from samba shares as-is while serving all embedded or external subtitles (not just 1 that fits some obscure rules and dropping all other ones). 

So it's really simple (one would think):

- must support 4k HDR (hevc/x265 at least) 
- must support containers mostly mkv and mp4
- must support older codecs (x264 etc)
- must support samba shares with all types of subtitles (embedded, external, srt, sub,...)
- all of the above in plug and play style (enter share credentials once and it just works, like wd tv live)

But I fail to find a player that explicitly states this. All seem to be geared around plex and similar "trying to be smart" systems.

What are my options?

Looking for a 4k media streaming device to replace my WD TV Live

I'm updating my review entirely, I was finally able to get Wolf Launcher to run and MAN is it SO SO SO MUCH better than the stock launcher that's the current update.  The stock launcher is OK, it hitches and shows me so much irrelevant content since I only use my Plex server. Wolf Launcher is 10x more responsive and looks much nicer. I really, really like Android TV (OS). But my current TV is just not cutting it. I’m not complaining. I knew going in that a budget TV was going to give me issues eventually. I just wanted to give Android TV a try and see if I liked it and I needed a cheap set for then and there.

Well, I’ve fallen in love with the OS. And I’m ready to purchase something long term. Can anyone give me their personal experiences with sets that perform well, and continue to perform well over time? I really want something that won’t slow down to a crawl on me after a few months of use. I’ve heard good things about Sony of course, anything else to consider?

 But no, I'm forced to go through Kodi (which I hate) and all the associated quirks to play a file. No digital out on the thing adds insult too. And why, why only 3 GB of RAM in this day and age? Why not bloody 8, or even more. At $200, it should be there

 Shield does 4k worse that 20 y old WD TV (purchased for $80 back in 2009) does 1080p. I also wish I could bypass all the streaming options and use this Nvidia simply as a player, with file directories in an HD connected to it listed, just like with WD TV. As most modern TVs have all the same features as this thing when it comes to streaming, having the player seems useless. Further, I connected a simple HDD with my BD rips directly to my LG TV's USB, and all the files - even the high bit rated - played just fine with no hiccups. I only hope the player will justify itself when challenged with playing something uber high bit rate - what an internal TV player won't handle. We'll see

I have a Sony A80J, Nvidia Shield TV Pro, PS5, Definitive Technology Mythos 4 fronts, Mythos 3 Center, Cube 3 Sub and Pro 1000 Rears 5.1 plus 2 outdoor speakers on A/B switching.

 My sound stopped working, checked sound settings (turned off surround sound), rebooted, factory reset, but could not get sound back. Tried support forums no one had a permanent fix, and tried chat support but gave up after waiting 30 minutes.  Just seems like i should not have these kind of simple problems that require more than 30 minutes of troubleshooting for a premium device. I'd call myself an intermediate user i can fix most simple issues like this
