Plus, the 4K and upscaling streaming quality is, I assume based on reviews and other Reddit threads, very close between both devices so that isn’t the deciding factor for me because I am expecting to not be able to tell a difference picture-quality wise especially for 4K content on streaming services.

So, I am mainly asking in relation to these features as gaming isn’t important to me as I a;ready have an Xbox One S.

Any helpful and objective advice would be greatly appreciated.

nVidia Shield TV Pro 4K vs. 4K Firestick: Which is better for privacy, security, customisation and streaming?

 Moving data (there is very little as my unit is new) has been going on 20 minutes. I say it failed to move.  Update: 30 Dec 17. !

 Tried 3 different cables. No consistent way to get it to connect once it does not connect after wakup the Shield. 3. External Hard Drive plugged to USB continues to run even after Shield is put to sleep

 HDMI Erratic I find the HDMI connection from Shield to my new Sony receiver would sometimes connect, sometimes just black screen. Turn this off, turn then on, unplug replug cables, etc, etc and finally it works. Using latest cables all new from Amazon. All other HDMI to my receiver work, and always done so

 So when searching the internet about the product you have to sift through and guess which results are for the current version software, or some older version. An online instruction manual would be great, and easy to update. HDMI Erratic I find the HDMI connection from Shield to my new Sony receiver would sometimes connect, sometimes just black screen. I've believed for a while now that many of the issues people experience with Sony TV's are due to the Android TV OS.  Not all, but many.  As the Android TV OS and Sony's TV's become more complex the issues also become more complex and mystifying.

The Nvidia Shield TV is a good example of how hard a company has to work to make the Android TV experience a good one.  Nvidia has been continually updating the Shield TV for more than 5 years and over that time they have spent countless hours just trying to squish bugs in the Android TV software.  They have one device to concentrate on and have been using, more or less, the same SoC the entire time.  Sony has used probably a half dozen different SoC's and hardware platforms in that time so as you can imagine they don't spend the same amount of time on each product trying to hammer out the bugs because next year they are going to have a new lineup of products and they have to worry about getting those to market.

Android TV is a great multimedia platform but I think it makes a poor TV OS.

I’ve had my 85” 900h for a month now no issues yet. It’s hooked up to my receiver and surround sound and the only streaming device I use is my 4K Apple TV and everything runs from one cable in my receiver to the 2.1 arc hdmi port on the tv. Sounds like more problems are happening to guys using more of the built in features so maybe going 3rd party could fix a lot of them

I have a genuine question I was hoping could spark an interesting and productive discussion.

I've been a Sony TV customer for over two decades and have typically been very happy with their offerings. Every Sony TV I have owned (from Trinitron CRTs to flat panels and beyond) has been well-researched before purchase and utilized to its full potential after purchase for many years (sometimes decades). Buyers remorse was typically non-existent when it came to purchasing the right Sony TV. If you had an issue, you were in the minority by a large margin.

But lately, as we're all aware, the amount of issues plaguing Sony's offerings have become extremely common. It's so pervasive that it's creating a perception that terrible implementations and buggy software/features are now apparently par for the course with Sony's modern offerings.

Back when I purchased my first 4K/UHD Sony TV in 2013, my friends and I all decided we were going to upgrade together and we all bought Sony. We each had different usage cases and environments so we each got slightly different TV's to suit out needs. At the time, all the TVs we bought were using Sony's older XMB based software or similar. To this day, every single one of those TVs is still going strong.

Fast-forward to the period between 2016-today and some of us have upgraded to Sony's newer offerings sporadically over the years. The biggest difference (aside from the feature set, naturally) has been that all these newer TVs were using some form of Android TV software. The most recent among us being me with the X900H.

Here's how it is going so far:

* One friend's TV got stuck in a boot loop after a firmware update. Sony's only recommendation to my friend was to provide a list of local places where he could safely dispose of the TV.
* Another friend's TV no longer has sound via any HDMI port, and he had to revert to using optical.
* Another has an issue where their TV reboots 1-2 times a day.
* And I have all of your commonly discussed X900/X90H issues (most of which are discussed here regularly). And the difference between our positive experiences a while ago compared to today: Android TV.

So, I wanted to open this up for discussion:

1. Is Sony not the one to blame here? Instead, should be looking at the terrible Android TV software that seems to have issues with so many TVs (and not just Sony), concluding that it simply sucks?
2. Is Sony definitely the one to blame, because Android TV is actually really good but they are failing miserably with its implementation?
3. Or is it both? Android TV just sucks in general, and Sony is no better for cramming it into their TVs without making sure it performs well?

The biggest difference (aside from the feature set, naturally) has been that all these newer TVs were using some form of Android TV software. The most recent among us being me with the X900H.</p>

<p>Here&#39;s how it is going so far:</p>

<ul>
<li>One friend&#39;s TV got stuck in a boot loop after a firmware update. Sony&#39;s only recommendation to my friend was to provide a list of local places where he could safely dispose of the TV.</li>
<li>Another friend&#39;s TV no longer has sound via any HDMI port, and he had to revert to using optical.</li>
<li>Another has an issue where their TV reboots 1-2 times a day.</li>
<li>And I have all of your commonly discussed X900/X90H issues (most of which are discussed here regularly). </ul>

<p>And the difference between our positive experiences a while ago compared to today: Android TV.</p>

<p>So, I wanted to open this up for discussion:</p>

<li>Is Sony not the one to blame here? Instead, should be looking at the terrible Android TV software that seems to have issues with so many TVs (and not just Sony), concluding that it simply sucks?</li>
<li>Is Sony definitely the one to blame, because Android TV is actually really good but they are failing miserably with its implementation?</li>
<li>Or is it both? Android TV just sucks in general, and Sony is no better for cramming it into their TVs without making sure it performs well?</li>
</ol>

. but it's not a deal break - would like to get a better responding controller though.  Second: The USB port and connecting a USB drive as a integrated storage. The USB ports are very firm on the back, I was inserting my USB drive into the port and thought I was putting it in the wrong way because of how difficult it was to insert - turns out it eventually went in, but the port scratched my USB drive

WD TV live let me play video files from samba shares as-is while serving all embedded or external subtitles (not just 1 that fits some obscure rules and dropping all other ones). 

So it's really simple (one would think):

- must support 4k HDR (hevc/x265 at least) 
- must support containers mostly mkv and mp4
- must support older codecs (x264 etc)
- must support samba shares with all types of subtitles (embedded, external, srt, sub,...)
- all of the above in plug and play style (enter share credentials once and it just works, like wd tv live)

But I fail to find a player that explicitly states this. All seem to be geared around plex and similar "trying to be smart" systems.

What are my options?

Looking for a 4k media streaming device to replace my WD TV Live

1 and remote firmware 1.05 have resolved the previous issues with the remote. The only nagging issue I am having is the shield network storage "unmounting" itself whenever the device restarts, which makes it a hassle to transfer content on the fly without having to first re-mount the device. If there is a fix for this I would love to know

17: I did some digging and got the drive to finally show on the network (hopefully for good). This is from Nvidia’s site, I suggest you give it a try if you’re having issues like I was: “To immediately connect to your SHIELD, type “\\SHIELD” into the Windows Explorer address bar. If you changed your device name (found in Settings > About on your SHIELD), replace “SHIELD” with your device name (without any spaces). Alternatively, you can type your SHIELD’s IP address into the Windows Explorer address bar: \\192

 Most people are not comfortable spending an extra $100 for features that were standard in the previous version of this device. I'm also annoyed to a lesser extent by the lack of an HDMI cable. The remote in it's current state is worthless and needs to be resolved either by replacement or a patch.  Overall Rating: 4

Sleek and capable streaming device. VERY FAST!

Hello everyone!

I recently purchased a Samsung 4K Smart TV for the first time ever. Unfortunately, it doesnt support Netflix, Youtube or HBO in 4K, it only sticks to 1080p@60 when using the built in OS. The 2nd gen Chromecast my prev TV was rocking doesn't seem to do the trick either. 

Anyway, I'm in the marker for a new 4K TV BOX that can provide 4K support all around. Also, I'm interested in it having support for external HDD's and wired ethernet connection at the same time for 4K playback purposes (home movies and whatnot).

The options I've come across so far are:

\- Xiaomi Mi TV Box S: good price-quality ratio, however it has absurd compromises, like only recognizing FAT32 HDDs with the consequent 4GB file size limit. Absurd.

\- Google Chromecast with Android TV: it needs a USB-C hub, it's rather pricey and seems like it doesn't have access to Plex/Kodi based platforms.

Can you please advise? Thank you so much in advance.

Need assistance with getting an Android TV Box...

 Per their website they advertise all the Google Assistant features as "TECHNICALLY AMAZING, BRILLIANTLY SIMPLE. ALL COMING SOON." and "Early 2017".

 I considered buying this thing for quite some time and ultimately decided on it, mostly for the Gamestream feature. I have an Nvidia-powered gaming PC and wanted to seamlessly stream games to my living room setup. I strongly considered the much cheaper Steam Link setup but the Shield provided several things the Steam Link does not: 5.1-channel surround for games, a better controller (personal opinion - I tried the Steam Controller and disliked it), and the AndroidTV OS made it a better option for my wants

 I just used this today to buy and install a few games without getting up from the couch.  I'm pretty pleased with the Shield TV and I'm happy with my purchase. I'd give it 5 stars but I'd like to see some of the AndroidTV features mature or be a bit more responsive. I'd really like to see the full Google Assistant installed on the device because Nvidia is touting it as if it's already a working feature which it's not, it's just confirmed to come soon
