As a high schooler working part time in a supermarket I went for “bang for your buck” with this. I wanted great sound at a reasonable price.

The whole system is running through an Argon SA-1 amplifier, which I chose because it had all the stuff I needed (at the moment), and had a reasonable price tag. 

Running into that I have a NAD C558 turntable, upgraded with an Ortofon 2M Red pickup. The turntable was mainly picked because of the discount I got, since it was a demo model. It was already a contestant when I was looking, so the offer just gave me the extra push. I was recommended upgrading the pickup, but I wasn’t sure I’d wanna spend those $100+ on one, especially since I had an alright one on it already (Ortofon OM 10), but after I heard the difference I knew I made the right call.

For CD’s I’m using an NAD C538, since I also got that at a bargain. Not much to say here as I mainly listen to vinyl, but I’m happy with the sound off the CD’s I have.

Now to the speakers. These B&W 607’s are out of this world. These have sound on par with the higher end speakers I’ve heard at half the price. I cannot emphasise enough how happy I am with them, and they’re a extremely good entry point into the audio world. 

By devoting the majority of my pay checks into this project I finally have a coherent, awesome sounding system. The next thing for me, is getting floor stands for the speakers (as they’re too close to each other atm). Also, I need a way to get use headphones with it, as my amp does not have a headphone port built-in, help would be very much appreciated on that point. Any other feedback to optimise my setup would be great as well, thanks.

Nice. You're right about the speakers. I went with the 606's, also in white, paired with a Cambridge Audio CXA60. Ridiculously happy with both.

After 1 year into this hobby, sinking most of my pay checks into it, this is my setup. This is what my life has become. (Specs in comments)

 I put in the default cart (a cheap AT91) for comparison and the crackles and pops reduced, as did the quality of the sound of reproduction. I switched it back and tried more records. Again, the Red would create a great stage, but would shower it in pops and highlight any mistreatment. The run ins and run outs were quite unpleasant

 Like a puppy keen to go for a walk, but on older (thrift store) vinyl, the 2M seemed to pick up every bit of surface noise it could find, digging out every crackle from the grooves. I tried to like it, but it was fatiguing and unforgiving to the ear, on my set up. I put in the default cart (a cheap AT91) for comparison and the crackles and pops reduced, as did the quality of the sound of reproduction. I switched it back and tried more records

  Firstly, the Ortofon is packaged exquisitely and looks great, it looks expensive! To mount it to your headshell was simple, as you don't need the tiny little bolts, the screws mount into the cartridge itself, excellent idea. Set up is a little tough since the tapered design makes it a little hard to get the correct alignment, added to the fact that it's a heavy cart that rides pretty high, the only way to balance the tonearm on the Fluance is to add extra weight to the other end of the tonearm, this is more the fault of the deck design than the cart of course, but I think a lot of people may be looking to this cart to improve this player, so it's good to know.  Soundwise, on a new record. This set up sounded exquisite, in an enthusiastic and lively kind of way

1 Carbon with an Ortofon 2M Red. It wasn’t long after I put down the needle that I noticed more air, better instrument separation. Just wonderful!

New turntable day!

The sound of the mono records are improved with this cartridge. The sound is more centered. The problem I have is the surface noise of the vinyl is higher than it was with the stereo needle and this is on brand new mono audiophile vinyl. No one seems to be able to explain why

Now I hear surface noise.

Yeah, Rega's are fab.

I have the old (80s era) Planar 3 with an Ortofon 2M Blue and it sounds mint.

The Dali Spektor 2 are great, too, agreed. Best small speakers for under £300 for sure.

OK, this post is definitely pointless fluff, but I have to share with someone how impressed I am with my new Rega Planar 3 turntable. I am not an audiophile by any measure, but me and the SO decided to treat ourselves to a new turntable after a month or so of tough work schedules. I took quite a bit of head scratching to work out how to properly align the cartridge, but we managed.

I have to say this sounds really, really nice. Granted, my old record player was a terrible no-name plastic piece of crap, so the baseline was very low... but this sounds so clean I feel like I'm listening to my records for the first time again. No hiss, no skipping (my old player skipped lots, probably a bad cartridge alignment). There's also a lot more 'space' to the music then there was before.

Set up:

* Rega Planar 3 w/ Rega Elys 2 cartridge
* Onkyo TX-8270
* DALI Spektor 2 (these sound unbelievably good for their size)

Currently indulging in a Magazine's Second Hand Daylight.

New Rega Panar 3 turntable sounds awesome!

  I bought the 2M red to replace a GRADO prestige black cartridge that I suspected was hitting the twilight of it's life. I am a fan of the GRADO moving iron design and almost bought the upgraded Green needle (basically the same as the black needle but guaranteed to have less imperfections as it is selected from the top 15% of it's production run). The reason I decided to try the ORTOFON 2M red was it's favorable professional reviews and it's higher output (5.5 mv)

 The sibilance issues are slowly but surely working themselves out and the soundstage seems wider as well. All in all I'm pretty happy with my purchase and I'm looking forward to passing hour 50 w/ the 2M red to finally experience a completely (hopefully) run in ORTOFON cartridge. Although I am happy with the 2M red I can see how there is room to improve on it's sound so perhaps I'll upgrade the cartridges needle to a 2M blue later. If I hit the lotto maybe even a Bronze or black as I am impressed with the 2M line

I would say that this cartridge is excellent for the money spent but you must be patient because the run in time is well over 20-30+ hours before it truly sings. Once break in is complete it has a very balanced and precise sound w/ out too much base or treble. I paid about a $100 for my 2M red and the more time I spend with it the more confident I feel in my purchase. I especially feel it is suited to rock, pop, soul and perhaps jazz

 At that point I wasn't convinced it was superior to my old GRADO.  Well, I can tell you that after over 30 hrs on this needle I feel it is at least as good as the GRADO black that I previously used and I suspect has deeper base w/ out sacrificing mids and treble. Want to replace this very old cartridge (stylus replacement costs more than a new cartridge). I've seen many recommendations for the AT95E, so I'd probably get the new version of that (AT-VM95E).

My problem is I don't know how to replace the cartridge. The headshell pictured in the turntable's service manual is different to the one on my turntable, which has no visible screws - see the attached images.

Would be grateful for some help! Also happy to take other recommendations for cartridges.

Help changing the cartridge on my Technics SL-23 turntable

  I think classical piano is about the best source for audio comparisons: I used Richard Goode's Beethoven sonatas (superb!). The bass and mid-range are very similar to the Shure, but the top end is impressively brighter. The reason for the 4 stars? Maybe too bright. But note that the cartridge is still brand new, and that might soften up a bit with some use

Such a change I can't tell: maybe too bright: will update later

After nearly 10 years of service, this turntable still works great. It was a very good purchase.
