I purchased this pack for a two week trip to Europe, where we would be changing accommodations every few days. 

No matter how I distributed the weight of the contents and adjusted the straps, the top of the pack always seemed to be pulling away, putting a strain on my shoulders, which resulted in continuous shoulder discomforted after the second flight of our journey. When we arrived in Europe, I was looking for a suitcase with wheels to carry the pack because it was very uncomfortable.

 It has a pretty slim. Look I like that. It'S not super overwhelmingly big, even though it's 40 liters, so that when you're carrying this by a shoulder, strap or a handle, it's still not gon na be too uncomfortable to use, and so speaking of the shoulder strap. That'S the first thing that I'll talk about here

 You can see this really beefy YKK zipper here. This feels really durable. It opens and closes very well, and then it's also lockable and the teeth on this are a little bit more exposed and I would like to see, but it does have this flap - that kind of comes over to help add some additional protection against the weather. So, overall, just a really solid, build quality with the materials use here, similar to a lot of the other great bags that we've seen from Osprey and then continuing along the outside

 It'S really nice to be able to tweak how this sits on your shoulders just a little bit more for a more comfortable carry on the straps. You also have an adjustable and removable sternum strap, and you have this little safety whistle here on the strap itself and then everything like the system that it has here for adjusting. You can just kind of slide this through and for the most part. This actually feels really secure and then moving down towards the bottom there's also a built-in waist belt

 Here'S how I would use it I'd gear up by packing all my main essentials in the day pack, with all my excess clothing and gear in the cargo bag, I'd clip them together for my trek to the airport and detach them. When I get to the terminal. The day pack is my personal item and the cargo bag is my carry-on the cargo bag stoves in the overhead bin. Well, I have my tablet: headphones magazines and toiletries in the day pack under the seat in front of me, once I arrive at my destination, I connect them back together and carry on my way with one conveniently packed piece of luggage

 That'S too large and uncomfortable it'll fit just right. The main pocket opens through a smart zipper around back that way, you can access your gear, even if the two bags are clipped together. There'S a padded sleeve for a 15-inch laptop and a tablet, and in here a nice organization pocket up front keeps your gadgets in order, while a sneaky pocket in the back secures valuables stretchy bottle pockets, hold your coffee and water and a blinky light attachment point means You can ride downtown and be seen now on to the cargo bag. The main pocket of the cargo bag opens wide and the compression straps inside help you stay organized

 Let'S look at the day pack. It has a light wire frame to give it the support. You need it's more comfortable to wear than most of the two-in-one luggage I see on the market. The fit is women's specific and the torso is adjustable, so you don't have to worry about a pack

I will buy this — someday!

Not easy to carry around the airport with all the clipping and unclipping. Also digs into the shoulders as it doesn't distribute the weight well. Wound up selling and buying a different bag.

Painful

 Make any mesh compartments with zippers in the appropriate locations and not one huge pocket but separated into two on mesh compartments. Have the antigravity mesh setup for the back component (like you have on the ariel model) For comfort and good ventilation. If you could only make this model a reality I’m sure everybody would love it! I have plenty of more ideas so contact me if you need some advice in the design department!

Awful design!

I appreciate that Osprey's designers have tackled this travel challenge, but this is the first Osprey product to disappoint me.   REI, can I return it?

-Attaching the carry-on is about impossible if the backpack is full.  The bulk of the backpack volume is near the bottom, which only exacerbates the problem.

-The shape of the backpack that is necessary to accomodate the carry-on means that it packs oddly and things tend to sink to the bottom.  The main compartment needs to be opened halfway or better to access the contents, making them prone to spilling

A great idea in theory...

  Osprey seems to like that style on many packs, but it's not our favorite due to access issues.  We solved it by leaving zipper pulls on side instead of top, and accessing from side when only needing one or two things.

Some people complained about putting bags back when stuffed.  We had no problem with that, suitcase part has frame meant to fit around corners of pack part. Full pack is made to fit airline carry-on which is so helpful!  We spent one day climbing Kilimanjaro and packs worked great for that!  Super comfortable!  My husband hated the men's black color so we both bought women's and it's so adjustable that it worked great for both of us!

  Needed lots of space in backpack for flights as carry-on.  Also needed decent pack for hiking.  All the others we could find had small detachable day pack with no structure and no waistband.  This one separates into suitcase-like bag with: handles, long shoulder strap, compression straps,  internal compression area, and big pocket; and daypack with:  little hidden pocket, big outside pocket, internal computer slot, 2 water bottle holders, and great waistband and chest strap
