I also tend to carry it around a lot, trains, buses and lots of walking, so it should be comfortable. I mainly carry clothes, not much electronics (Kindle, flashlight, charger), so my bag usually is not that heavy.

If I am mainly looking for a rectangular shaped travel bag that is about 20L without a laptop sleeve and other pockets, where should I look? Maybe small hiking bags?

  There is only one double zipper on the bag but the large front pocket absolutely needs a two-slider zipper.  There is what appears to be a blinky mount at the bottom of the bag but it's too thin to keep the blinky on the bag, so if you lay your bag on the floor it will fall off, and it's angled oddly anyway.  I'm not happy with the bag. I could go on but I don't think it would be helpful

  The shoulder straps fit me okay even though unisex bags often don't fit, but the bag is too long for me to wear comfortably. The hip belt goes around my hips (maybe 48" at that height?). If you have a medium or short torso you'll probably want to go to the women's sizing. Although part of the reason it's uncomfortable on me is that I'm big and the hip belt reinforcements jab into my hips, so smaller sizing wouldn't help that

What I'm wondering then is if there are any backpack brands out there in the $100 or under range that are just as strong, durable, water resistant, you name it.

Osprey Quality with Odd Design

So I've been biking to work for about three years, 13 miles one way.  Used to be lucky to get to do it two days a week due to having young children.  I'm increasing frequency now due to the oldest now driving and we've also had a rail trail (8 of 13 miles worth) to work get refurbed and it's rideable now.  I think these two things are taking a toll on my computer.

 I work at home 3 days a week (thanks to the pandemic, for eternity now), so I have to take my computer back and forth.  I think the bike commute is starting to take it's toll on my machine.

How do you guys protect your computer?

I initially tried a backpack, but that SUCKS for 13 miles of Vermont hills and gravel.  But my commuting partner uses one and enjoys it, it's just not for me.

I use panniers and stuff my work clothes on the inside and my computer in it's shoulder bag stuffed on the outside.  It's pretty firm in there.

Just curious what others do?

Carrying a computer 13 miles to work on road/rail trail

 The laptop sleeve is great and there alittle organizational pouches in the main compartment but other than that the bag is largely open and kind of uninspired…

No a great school bag. Better for light traveling.

  I had a wonderful Chinese-made bag from my old pharmaceutical company that served me well for over ten years but even with multiple strap repairs, it finally gave in and tore from the backside. The main pocket was deep enough to fit a koozie lunch pack plus a Dell Latitude laptop for work. Internally it had a laptop section and two internal pockets at the bottom of the bag. It had a top pouch and a front facing pouch that had multiple mini pockets inside, a zippered side pocket and a side pouch

This was the second Osprey pack I bought in January '20 for the purpose of carting my lunch and laptop to work daily. I rate it a 4 - not quite perfect but pretty good for bags under $100.  Anyhow I don't use the tablet zippered section. The main pouch is big and just clears my Koozie lunch bag. Meal prep is a thing, people, and some of mine are liquidy which means you need it to sit flat, and not at any angle weird like a sandwich could. This was a key component for me in buying a EDC bag, and why I didn't buy the North Face Borealis (tapers smaller at the bottom), and why returned the Swissgear 1900 (main pocket not large enough)

 At least the Quasar has the third pouch with internal pockets and has the jacket drawstrings, which honestly wouldn't get used unless you are out hiking. Day to day from house to car to cubicle and back, it's not really functional. It does look cooler than the Centauri which lacks the drawstrings.  Here's what I'm not jiving with at the moment, but can probably get over in time:  Side pouches for water bottles--they fit the big ones, but I don't really find myself carrying TWO big bottles

Good for the price for EDC/work bag

 There are a lot of space in the backpack and my 15.6" laptop fits in it easily and nicely. I don't like the inside zipper (there is only one pocket with zipper inside the bag), because the handle is different and I preferred the same style as the outside zippers. Also only the main section that got a laptop pocket opens with two zippers and all other sections have only one

 Also the whole front design and logo colouring is different. I think one of the pockets is also removed from the middle section (main middle zipper) Okay here is my honest review: Straps are very comfortable and easy to size and adjust. There are a lot of space in the backpack and my 15.6" laptop fits in it easily and nicely

 I don't like the inside zipper (there is only one pocket with zipper inside the bag), because the handle is different and I preferred the same style as the outside zippers. Also only the main section that got a laptop pocket opens with two zippers and all other sections have only one. That red easy access band for keys or cards seems to be made of poor materials and I prefer not to trust it with my keys. I'd appreciate more pockets inside the bag, but current ones are still Okay

Nice quality and design

---the great--- Osprey have great warranties and materials so wont focus on that too much. Sections are big and plentiful, quick access pocket and mesh pockets are generous too. Fits a 15 inch Dell Precision in fine in the dedicated "floating" pocket and would fit a 17 in the rear section easily (but not in the actual laptop bit)  ----The average ---- It's a little bigger than I thought, at 28l it's bigger than my 30l cheap trespass it's replacing.  ---the meh--- Downside is that when utilising the top pocket or if not stuffing out the bottom of the main compartment it's a little too heavy and kind of "flops" over

  --verdict-- Overall nothing major bad with the bag, just some minor gripes. Would still recommend.
