If you frequently shoot in low light, the Panasonic LUMIX GH5s is one of the best options. Released as a low-light video-optimized alternative to the GH5 (the predecessor to the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 II mentioned above), the GH5s uses a lower-resolution sensor with dual-native ISO, which is meant to minimize noise and grain when shooting at higher ISO settings. It also uses a multi-aspect sensor, meaning you can change the aspect ratio without altering the angle of view. Like the GH5 II, it can record both UHD 4k and DCI (Cinema) 4k at up to 60 fps. It also comes with a full set of inputs and outputs, including a full-sized HDMI port to easily connect an external monitor.

The other big difference is that it doesn't have in-body image stabilization. Panasonic deliberately removed it to make space for the multi-aspect sensor and to eliminate the possibility of micro-vibrations to the sensor. That means you'll need to use a gimbal or external stabilizer if you want stable handheld footage. If that isn't a dealbreaker, however, this is one of the best cameras for videography you can get in low-light conditions.

If you're more interested in video than photography, the Panasonic LUMIX GH5s is a great option. It's less suited to photography than our high-end picks above because of its smaller Micro Four Thirds sensor. However, it's designed specifically for low-light video work, taking the best video features from the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 (the predecessor to the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 II that we tested) and adding in a lower-resolution sensor optimized for low light. This camera is a videography powerhouse, giving you tons of recording formats/codecs to choose from along with different resolution options like DCI (Cinema) 4k and anamorphic 4k to get a more cinematic look, not to mention unlimited recording times.

That said, you'll get better low-light performance with a full-frame option like the Sony &alpha;7S, though the current iteration, the Sony &alpha;7S III, will cost you a small fortune compared to the Panasonic. The Panasonic will be more than enough for most people to shoot videos or films in dim lighting conditions. You also get a more portable system overall, with smaller and generally cheaper Micro Four Thirds lenses. Unfortunately, the Panasonic doesn't have built-in image stabilization, so you'll need to use an external stabilizer to get the smoothest footage.

 It does really great video and it has some awesome features, but the GH5S just isn't designed for the type of person who likes this camera. So it is not designed for vloggers, YouTubers, and people who are going to be shooting like this. A lot of handheld, a lot of run and gun. The GH5S is designed for filmmakers and more specifically, I would argue, kind of filmmakers on a higher level than even people like me

 So on the GH5S, you're going to actually have a wider image, so a wider field of view, and more, you know, taking more advantage of the sensor size. So that's 16x9, now let's talk about the Cinema 4K, which both these cameras can record, and that is the 17x9 aspect ratio. On the GH5, it looks like this. Once again, it has to be within that micro four-thirds sensor, so we're not taking full advantage of the width of the imaging circle

Why People Are Wrong About The GH5s - Reason for No IBIS

I believe there must be some production quality issues with these GH5s cameras. The one I received produced terrible horizontal banding in VFR mode (that's to do slowmotion above 60FPS), making the footage unusuable. I also noticed significant noise at ISOs above 1600. Seems weird, coming from a camera marketed as a low light tool

Hi guys I'm back in the market for another camera the last time I bought a camera it was a Panasonic GH1 a really long time ago. I still have to 14 mm to 140 mm Lumix Vario lens which I know will work well with the GH5 if I decide to purchase that.

My question is, is Sony A7 iii able to shoot 4K without having to start and stop every 30 minutes? As much as I want to camera with good low light abilities what I really need is a camera that can record 4K for a long time because I'll be filming performances on stage. I will also be using the camera for films and sketches but my main concern is the ability to shoot 4K nonstop without having to stop every 30 minutes. 

So what you guys think? Should I get the GH5 since I already have the lens and it can shoot longer? Or can the a7 iii shoot longer than 30 mins?

Camera with 4k and no time limit?

Like everyone else says, this camera produces superb photo and video quality, and excellent for low light. However, lack of image stabilization is a serious issue for anyone who plans to use this camera as a walk around video camera. The footage will be annoyingly shaky. This camera is better than GH5 for video if you use it exclusively on a tripod

And it's excellent image stabilization more than makes up for relatively minor focusing issues that only matter in very specific situations

Great If You Know What You Are Getting It For

 They're both very cheap lenses, when you buy them used at least. And new, in order to get the full frame equivalent, so it at least cost $1,000 to $2,000 per lens. And so these are very cheap in comparison, mostly because of that smaller sensor, so you need less glass, cheaper lenses, which is awesome. Also, the lighter weight lenses allow you to balance it on a gimbal, and even zoom in and out without having to rebalance

 Another sticking point was autofocus. I had been using Sony cameras for a while, and the Sony autofocus was pretty great. But then I got the Ronin RS-C2, and I noticed that there was a feature that you could use with that, where you just plug a little cable from the gimbal to the camera, and you could control the focus with just that front dial. And I think that single-handedly switched my mind about whether or not I needed autofocus

 The main reasons I didn't switch to the Blackmagic Pockets Cinema camera was purely the size of the camera, the battery life, can't really balance it on a smaller gimbal. And so those were big things that I did a lot at weddings, which is where a lot of my work comes from. Another sticking point was autofocus. I had been using Sony cameras for a while, and the Sony autofocus was pretty great

I have a few well-paying clients interested in my work, but when I met with them, they informed me that I am hardware-restricted because my current camera (a Canon 250d) cannot shoot in 4K 60P or have a raw color profile.

They're ready to spend up to £1500 on a new camera, and I've informed them about the A7S II &amp; III, which are excellent models, but the A7S II has bad color science and can't shoot 4K at frame rates faster than 30fps. 

Additionally, the A7S III is too expensive.

Any suggestions for a camera that can shoot 4K 60P and competes with the Sony A7S' low light performance would be ideal!

Note that the pricing must also include the lens.

Need a low light mirrorless camera for nightclub work and professional video - £1500 budget

 Variable frame rates and auto focus only available in select video modes. 10 bit video codecs not on Imac you will need to use editing software or converter. GH5s - Great Camera for Video

 Two years ago I honestly wouldn't believe that contrast autofocus will be capable of doing this so it seems that Panasonic's DFD technology works really well and the autofocus is definitely usable. You just need to try different modes to find out what works best in specific situation. You can also use focus transition feature where the camera will make a smooth focus pull instead of you. The lack of in-body image stabilization in the GH5s has caused a lot of controversy

 The battery life is generally good, it uses new BLF19e batteries, it is rated for 440 shots and you should be able to get more than two hours of 4k video on single charge depending on the settings which is very good result. This works great in the G9 as well.
