The best mirrorless camera that we've tested for general video purposes is the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5. Although it doesn't feature as many advanced videography features as the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 II, this full-frame hybrid is a great option for most people who want a camera to record videos as well as still photos. It feels remarkably well-built and comes equipped with a fully articulated touchscreen to help you shoot from different angles or monitor yourself while recording.

It delivers incredible 4k video quality in brighter lighting conditions and great quality in 1080p. It also performs well in low-light, thanks to its full-frame sensor. It can shoot at up to 60 fps in either resolution, though shooting at this frame rate in 4k incurs a 1.5x crop. The camera also offers several recording formats and V-log picture profile support with a 10-bit internal recording capability to give you more latitude when color-grading your videos. The camera also has an excellent battery life and doesn't impose a recording time limit, which is great.

Although the camera has an effective overall autofocus system, it's not as impressive or consistent as some competing AF systems. In particular, it can sometimes struggle to keep track of non-human subjects. Thankfully, though, its face/eye tracking is more reliable, and it does a great job keeping people in focus when shooting video. All in all, this is one of the best 4k cameras we've tested, and it's a great choice for people interested in stepping up their video game.

If you'd prefer a camera with better low-light capability, check out the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5. It doesn't support All-I compression, and it doesn't have as many resolution options as the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 II. However, its full-frame sensor makes it better suited to recording video in low light. It's Panasonic's first L-mount camera, so it's also compatible with Leica and Sigma L-mount lenses as well as Panasonic lenses, giving you a growing range of lenses to choose from. Overall, the camera feels incredibly well-built, and it has a fully-articulated screen and in-body image stabilization. Its autofocus system is also more consistent than the GH5 II when tracking moving faces. Its overall video quality is excellent, and it has fantastic internal recording capability. That said, it can only shoot 4k 60p video with a severe 1.5x crop.

Get the GH5 II if you want more resolutions and recording format options, but if low-light capability and video quality are priorities, consider the DC-S5.

If you would prefer a camera with a full-frame sensor, check out the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5. Unlike the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 II, it doesn't support resolutions like cinematic 4k or anamorphic &quot;6k&quot;, and it can only shoot 4k 60 fps video with a significant 1.5x crop. However, its full-frame sensor delivers better overall video quality, especially in low-light situations. It can record 4k 10-bit 4:2:2 video internally, but it also records 10-bit 4:2:2 video in 1080p, and it can output larger video files. It has in-body image stabilization, and its autofocus system is better at tracking moving faces, though it's less consistent with objects. The camera has a fully-articulated screen and headphone and microphone jacks, but instead of a full-sized HDMI port, it has a micro HDMI output. Unfortunately, it doesn't support All-I compression for higher-quality video files.

Get the LUMIX GH5 II if you want more resolution and frame rate options, but if video quality and low-light performance are priorities, the Lumix DC-S5 is an excellent alternative.

Digital Photography Review

You'd never guess that the Panasonic LUMIX DC-S5 was Panasonic's first full-frame offering. Coming out of left field in 2020, this mid-range camera gives the big three camera brands a run for their money. While Panasonic's autofocus still leaves a lot to be desired compared to Canon or Sony, especially when recording video, this is a fantastic low-light camera with noise handling that's right up there with the Canon EOS R6.

It's also an excellent option if you're interested in video. It can record 4k / 60 fps (with a crop) and captures high-quality video files with a lot of recording formats to choose from. Video quality also stays great when shooting in low light, with plenty of sharpness and detail. Overall, if you don't mind the less reliable autofocus, this is a great low-light option for the price.

Panasonic is a global electronics manufacturer that makes everything from TVs and appliances to batteries, headphones, and cameras. Its camera lineup is marketed under the LUMIX brand and is made up primarily of digital mirrorless cameras. For a long time, Panasonic focused mainly on producing cameras within the Micro Four Thirds system, which the company standardized in collaboration with Olympus. Four Thirds camera sensors are about half the size of full-frame sensors, so they're smaller than APS-C sensors but larger than those typically found on compact point-and-shoot cameras. That gives them more focal reach and allows them to use lenses that are smaller and cheaper than full-frame lenses. More recently, Panasonic has also started producing full-frame cameras thanks to its L-mount Alliance with Leica and Sigma, which all produce L-mount compatible cameras.

Panasonic's first full-frame camera, the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5, is also the best Panasonic camera we've tested. While the company's still new to the full-frame scene, the S5 proves that Panasonic could have some staying power. Coming in at a relatively affordable price point, this enthusiast model is a great all-arounder with advanced 4k video features, and it's no slouch for still photography, either, especially for low-light performance. While it isn't the best for faster subjects, with a slow max burst rate and less reliable AF than you get with brands like Sony or Canon, it's still a welcome addition to the market.

I wanted to keep this camera and tried so many ways but in the end the independent AF made it unusable for my purpose.  PROS: Excellent image quality even at low bitrate 180 fps in 1080p, 30fps @ 4k full frame & 60fps @ super 35 Magical image stabilization Great ergonomics, far superior to the a7siii Beautiful noise at high ISO because you can nearly turn noise reduction off, much more usable at low light than the A7Siii, the king itself! CONS: The autofocus almost never works and when it does it loses face on a whim making it unusable in gimbal situation. The mount doesn't hold the lenses in place steadily: there is side to side play on all the lenses pointing at tolerance fault.

  The only other mirrorless system that has extensive third-party lenses is Sony and I considered the A7III. The Lumix won out because of its better menu system, jpeg colors, build quality, ergonomics, IBIS, and hi-res shot mode.  I'm primarily a stills photographer and I've found the autofocus to be fantastic. It's great at grabbing onto eyes and faces

If you want a mirrorless camera, I think the lens selection makes this the one to buy. I know the complaint with l-mount cameras has been that the lenses aren't there. In 2021, that's no longer a factor. On top of that, the fact that this has first party support from Sigma means that there are fantastic, fully supported lenses for this camera at half the price of what you get from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fuji

  I'm primarily a stills photographer and I've found the autofocus to be fantastic. It's great at grabbing onto eyes and faces. When subjects turn, it's still able to track their head movements. I've experimented with old manual focus Canon FD lenses and it has a great interface for focusing accurately with those as well

Incredibly powerful camera, inexpensive lens selection

Being a student, I have around $2000 to spend on a new camera. I am currently shooting on the a6500, and while it is a good camera, I can really tell the difference between 10bit and 8bit color, and even dynamic range.

I'm currently recording 1080 @30fps guitar videos and struggling with my setup, which includes a Canon SL2 (main) and Canon T4i (zoom/closeup on guitar). Running two cameras is really hard because I do everything myself (remotely controlling cameras through laptops via USB cables). 

I'd love to have only one main camera that I shoot in 4K, which (I think) will allow me to use that same shot to for zooming into closeups). This way, when I export to 1080, everything will still be high quality.

Budget is less than $2000, including lens (not written in stone but strongly desired). I currently have several Canon lenses but, from what I understand, Canon is really weak in the 4K video area (maybe that's changed). So I'd definitely consider switching camera brands if necessary. All shooting is done in my office, so I have a controlled studio setup and don't need to worry about portability, or any run-and-gun features.

Edit #2: Well, there were an awful lot of A6400 recs so, after some more research, I went ahead and ordered one from BH Photo. Although I must say that some late-breaking ZV-E10 comments (that I saw after I placed my order) have me wondering whether that would have been a better fit, and saved me $150. But it sounds like I won&#39;t be disappointed with the A6400 so I&#39;m not going to drive myself crazy trying to find the perfect fit. If It accomplishes my goal, it will have been worth it. I also ordered a motorized pan/tilt head because getting up to adjust my camera when I have a guitar in my lap is extremely annoying. :) Thanks again for all the great advice!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've decided to pick up an entry-level mirrorless camera and taking my videography hobby more seriously after years of using my iPhone to make videos (travel and content for social media). I've never owned a "serious" camera before but I'm willing to invest in a good system. My main purposes will be travel videography and content creation (e.g., recording video for a podcast and a web series). I also want to shoot some short films/documentaries in the future. I also have a number of major events coming up (weddings, etc) that I want a good camera for. I'm not much of a photographer but having a good photo camera would be nice.

I'm fairly budget-conscious but willing to invest about $3000 CAD (taxes in) for body and kit. I've narrowed my search down to the following: **Panasonic LUMIX S5 with 20-60mm kit lens** or **Sony a7C with 28-60mm kit lens**.

I want to make sure that whatever I buy now will meet my needs for the next 5 years at least, which is why I'm leaning towards Full frame instead of MFT/APS-C cameras, even though I'm a newbie. I've watched dozens of videos on Youtube about each of these cameras and have compared them to death. 

Some notes from my research so far: 

* I've held the a7c in my hands and don't think it's too small for me. But on the other hand, the a7C will almost definitely require me to purchase a gimbal whereas the S5's IBIS may not. Since I want to travel with these cameras, I feel the IBIS will help me the most.
* On the other hand, the AF on the Sony is untouchable and would make it easier to film. 
* I know the L mount is newer and less robust of a lens system than the E mount. But I don't think I'll be dropping serious $ on high-end lenses anytime soon and so I'll probably stick with the kit lens for as long as I can. However I'd like to hear more opinions about the respective lens systems.
* I know this is the most superficial point but I love the silver top of the a7C. 

I've been mulling this over for weeks and am driving my gf insane so please help me decide which one to pick up. Thank you in advance!!

Help a newbie pick my first ever "serious" camera: Lumix S5 vs Sony a7C

Just finished Bo Burnham's inspiring new Netflix special, Inside. The cinematography is awesome and the fact that he made such a beautiful film alone, makes me curious what camera he used. I know he shows it at the 10:05 mark, however it's too blurry for me to read the brand name. Apologizes for shitpost but I can find this info anywhere online. I'm a total camera noob but the special was so awesome it made me wonder how much that sort of camera would cost

Bonus Question: Are the slow zooms he uses through out done in post or programed in the camera? They are so powerful and clean looking.

Camera Used in New Bo Burnham Special:Inside?

Sony a7c is the lightest full frame with stabilisation - lumix s5 and canon r6 have great stabilisation but are much larger.

I am sure this is an unusual question, but my wife and I are attempting to hike the Pacific Crest Trail next year. We want to make weekly "episodes" while trekking via our editor back home. Most importantly, we want excellent footage to look back on and relive for decades.  

We have a Canon M50 with kit lens and it has done well on other hikes, but we are strongly considering an upgrade. 

Here are the main things to consider for our unique situation in order of descending importance:

1) around a $3,500 max budget for camera, lens, batteries, chargers, filters, etc. 

2) every ounce counts out there. The lighter the better for our shoulder, back and joints. 

3) won't be carrying a gimbal or anything more than a tiny travel tripod. Quality in-body stabilization is a must.

4) filming in high and low temperatures while immersed in rugged terrain. Does not have to be bombproof but needs to withstand a few bumps.

5) will probably only carry one zoom lens. It can not be more than around 100mm because of point 2 above. (Yes, I know that will likely cost us quality wildlife shots.) The lower the F-Stop the better as well, especially given the low-light, morning-night conditions. 

6) I know it is a bit of a loaded term, but we are going for as much of a cinematic look as possible.

7) I have a *little* photography experience and have always been drawn to Canons. If it is a close call between two options for you, give me the Canon one. 

Pretty sure that about covers the balance we are trying to strike. What do you recommend?
