 What's cool about that is the African mahogany brings that warmth from the inside of the drum, but also looks amazing on the outside of the drum with this really beautiful high gloss lacquer, and we'll get into the finish in just a minute. For now, on this particular setup, I have a seven by ten and an eight by twelve inch rack toms right here, fourteen by fourteen and sixteen by sixteen inch floor toms, a sixteen by twenty-two inch kick drum, and I have a matching snare that's five and a half by fourteen. This is a shell pack, so you know I've said it many times, shell packs don't come with snare drums, but they do make matching ones if you so choose. For now, I'm going to turn the snare wires off, and let's get into the sound of these tom toms

 If you want a little bit more snap out of these drums, put on a single ply head. The pinstripes do really well with this kit, I like the way they sound. Let's put the snare wires on, do the same thing. What's cool is the real musical tone between each drums, nice tone interval from high to low, and I have them tuned sort of low and thuddy at the moment

 And most every company makes great kick drum spurs. Pearl has a great take on their spurs and they've had them around for a really long time because really if it's not broke, don't fix it, that kind of thing. These spurs are sturdy as heck. The kick drums never move

Pearl Session Studio Select 5-piece Shell Pack Review

Treated myself to a new kit

 Aesthetics wise, the gloss black is classy and timeless, we really liked the slightly bronze look of the logo badges too, and finally the mahogany interiors of the shells add a beautiful detail that sets them apart from the crowd. The Sessions Studio Select drums come fitted with Chinese made Remo UT series heads, with something like a clear pinstripe over ambassador setup on the toms, you've got a coated ambassador on the snare, while the bass drum has a clear power stroke style batter head, and a ported coated front head. Also included is a bass drum muffling pillow that Velcro's into place to dampen the batter head. Once we got into tuning the drums, we were really pleased to find they settled into an even pitch all round, the only exception being the 14 inch tom that took us a little bit longer to get into tune, it did suffer from a kind of pronounced pitch dive sound that didn't seem to go away no matter how we tuned it, however we do feel like this is more to do with the head than any other reason

 Build quality wise, we were really impressed with the construction and the fit and finish of these shells. Across the board, there's no blemishes to be seen, and overall there's a very pro feel to this kit. We've always thought highly of Pearl's shell hardware, and this kit's no exception, with the OptiMount rack mount systems, the Super 2 hoops, and everything else feeling really solid and dependable. The snare throw-off mechanism is perhaps the only bit that felt a little bit flimsy, but it's still totally usable in its operation

 Finally, we really enjoyed the snare, it was crisp, loud and articulate, and we particularly enjoyed how it sounded in mid-tuning where there was a beautiful balance of overtones. Despite its loud modern voice, we actually found that this was a very versatile sounding snare with a great snare off sound as well as a really nice cross stick. Across the board, the tonality of this kit was bright and punchy, which I guess makes sense given the birch plies, but I have to say we were a little bit surprised that we didn't encounter more mid-range warmth and resonance as a result of the mahogany, as well as the very thin shell construction. As it is though, we felt that this kit had a lot of focus on stick definition that we can imagine sounding immense in the hands of a heavy hitting speed demon

 Across the board, the tonality of this kit was bright and punchy, which I guess makes sense given the birch plies, but I have to say we were a little bit surprised that we didn't encounter more mid-range warmth and resonance as a result of the mahogany, as well as the very thin shell construction. As it is though, we felt that this kit had a lot of focus on stick definition that we can imagine sounding immense in the hands of a heavy hitting speed demon. Now the shell pack on its own sets you back about £1,200, although we don't yet have the RRP, and if you wanted the matching snare with that, that would be about another £200 on top. With Pearl emphasizing both the punch and warmth of these drums in their literature, we were really keen to dig in and see what they sounded like, but before we go any further, let's check out a few more sound clips and then come back for some discussion. Our initial impression of these drums is that they're certainly thin shells, feeling quite lightweight yet still solid when you handle them

Pearl Session Studio Select Kit - Drummer's Review

The Pearl Session Studio Select probably has better (more perfect) bearing edges, and they likely have a higher quality birch which results in a superior sound. The hardware on the drums is probably better too, meaning the hoops, the tension rods, the swivel nuts and the lugs.

I'm looking at getting a second set for gigs and rehearsals (I play a Gretsch Renown).  Looking at birch drums, I have narrowed it down to the Pearl Session Studio Select and the Yamaha Stage Custom.  Can someone convince me of why the Pearl set is worth $1200 more?  I don't need cymbals, hardware or snares.  I also considered the DW Design, but am pretty sure I'm going with the Pearl or Yamaha.  Thank you!

Pearl Session Studio Select (birch) vs. Yamaha Stage Custom

 Now, this kit comes with a 60 degree bearing edge cut. It comes fitted with the Remo pinstripes, which I think was a great pick for this kit because it naturally just kind of cuts the sustain and gets right to the point with these punchy toms. Now, I know a lot of people say this about new kits that they sound great right out of the box, but this is a true fact with this kit. I set it up and just kind of did a finger tap tuning

 I have to say this kit looks different every light in every room, but the upkeep is a little bit more because it shows every speck of dust and every piece of hair that falls on it. This kit comes equipped with the Pearl's trademark Super Hoop 2s with a 2.3 millimeter triple flange hoop sitting on the Opti-Mount suspension system, which I like, makes it easy for any type of setup and configuration. One aesthetic I really like about what they added to this series is the new Session Studio Select badge using the classic music bronze and black color scheme, which fits this finish perfectly

 Now, I know a lot of people say this about new kits that they sound great right out of the box, but this is a true fact with this kit. I set it up and just kind of did a finger tap tuning.  So all of these drums have the same shell construction. They're all 6 plies so they're pretty thin and responsive how I like it. They're made up of 2 outer plies of mahogany and 4 inner plies of birch. So again a lot of high end response, a lot of snap which I'm really excited about

 It's a Pearl Reference Pure Music City Custom 14 by 6 and a half inch. I absolutely love this thing. It's got 4 plies of maple and 2 plies of birch so it's got a lot of high end from the birch but the 6 and a half inch depth gives it a lot of low end as well. So the finish on this kit is called Ice Blue Oyster and I'm a sucker for good oyster wraps so I absolutely love this finish

MY NEW DRUMSET! Pearl Session Studio Select - Ice Blue Oyster

 Yeah, I wanted to hear the Power Stroke 77 on the snare just to see these are, the pin strokes have a great sound, but they're thicker, more fat type of wet sound or whatever, classic kind of sound. I'm thinking for what Peretti normally does or whatever, the good crack might be good for that. It's a good pop and crack. And what's the main difference between that and just like a simple definition between that and the one I had on there? You mean like the difference between the actual physical head? Yeah, yeah, like the physical elements of it

 I know that it was asked that the review was done with the least amount of cymbals possible to review the drums themselves, so I'll try to stick to that. But I can't promise I won't hit one here and there just out of habit. But for the kick drum, just a basic sound, it's got a good punchy hit, basically for heavy metal, which is what I do. And the eliminator pedal, it's got a good action, great action

 Anyway, he's kind of fine-tuning and tweaking up the drum set to make it to where I'd normally like to record and he knows more about that and the man's been mastering my albums for like the last ten albums and even before that with a couple of bands I was in. So he's pretty much making his drum set to where I can play like the grown-ups. He's a grown-up. By the way, he said that is Kevlar, so we are going to attach that to Jamie and shoot him

 This one's got the gel on the top, and then I've got the gel and the ones from ASI print on the top and the bottom on this one. But that way when I'm doing something, I'm getting a different snare hit for each one. Each of these toms, great resonance, thanks to Jamie King, we were able to reduce a lot of the resonance sound so it's not so bong, bong, which is a pain when you're recording because you've got to click that out every time, and as you can see it does have a little bit of resonance, but I think it's a perfect amount, especially for the rock and metal that I play, I think it sounds great, and the combination, the resonance is done so well, and again thanks to Jamie King, it doesn't bleed in too bad to where you can't tell. It can be separated very easily is what I'm trying to say when you're recording

I recently bought a pearl session studio select and now a clearsonic acrylic shield with soundproof cloth. So I believe it’s time to upgrade from the bare minimum digital reference mic bundle and upgrade my drum mics . I have a snare , 2 toms , 2 floor toms and the kick so I would keep that in mind for the pricing .
