Even more than four decades after it's originally released it's still worth buying in my opinion and it's overall a great pedal.

Compared to my Proco Rat 2, it sounds basically identical. * As for the DS-1, it's got two common circuit bends, one gives it kind of an octave-up drone and the other is kind of a suboctave drone. The range of distortion is *amazing*. It’s the distortion sound I’ve been hearing in my head for so long, and now I have it. It also pairs great with my other pedals - running the SD-1 into the RAT or running the RAT into the pumpkin pi sounds amazing, perfect for solo boosts and walls of sound. Overall, I’m extraordinarily happy with this pedal - looking forward to keeping it on my board for a long time!.

I have around 35 distortion/overdrive/fuzzes, and nothing has even come close to being as useful as a lowly ProCo RAT for me. Even with essentially no controls, it just works better at all gain ranges, with every source than anything else I own. The filter in that box is just perfect. Personally, I’ve always found big desktop units with all sorts of options extremely uninspiring.
