Are espressos machines viable for home?

  On the positive side, I like the appearance of this machine. It definitely has a 'presence' on the kitchen counter (I also purchased the Rancilio grinder and the Rancilio storage base base). I think the major issue with this machine is that it gets into a price point where most of us expect more features and consistency. As many have pointed out, the machine CAN produce GREAT espresso, but it IS very inconsistent, and if you go through the whole cycle of temp surfing, it's a lot of work for a shot

 If you use an electric razor, you won't like this machine.  === UPDATE 7/23 I've used this machine every day now since I purchased it, and I'm neither upgrading nor downgrading the initial assessment. Best home espresso machine for just espresso?

 At this point, we can produce drinkable espresso, but only produced 2 cups of great coffee that would rival a Tully's or Starbucks. There is definitely an art to this, and it takes time to get good at it, at least we hope ..

I am trying my best to overcome the " barrier of entry" to home-making my own espresso but I am coming up confused and discouraged. Basically , after a lot of research and reading, it seems like the only viable entry level machine capable of making half decent espspresso is the Breville Barista Express with an entry level tag of $700 USD. That is, if you are also trying to avoid the cost of a capable grinder at the same time. I am frustrated and discouraged  and seeking any ideas or opinions on cheaper ways to produce some decent espresso at my home without a $700 entry level price tag for a machine that is generally not even that well regarded but is considered "adequate" . Help.....??

First let me say, thanks for being awesome.  I've learned a lot from you guys just by lurking and reading.  I think one of the biggest contributors of knowledge and insight has been seeing what gear people have and more importantly *why they bought it and how they use it.*  Understanding where people are at and what they're trying to accomplish has been so helpful in understanding so many other things about espresso.

While I've been able to piece together a lot of this information from flair (thanks for that!), nuggets of info in posts, and inference, I haven't seen a thread where people plainly lay out their whole espresso journey so to speak, or at least, I haven't seen anything like that recently.  If you've got the time and the inclination, could you post what gear you started on, what you've upgraded to *and the decisions you made going into those upgrades*, and what you currently think your endgame would be both for equipment and what you want to end up in your cup?

Where did you start, where are you, and what's your endgame?

  I'd recommend this machine to a die-hard espresso drinker. It's not for the novice, or faint of heart since it does require a lot of experimentation to make a decent cup of brew. Using Fresh, Fresh, Fresh coffee is key to this machine. If you plan to buy from your local grocery story, you will likely be disappointed with the results

This is my second Rancilio Silvia. My previous unit is a V1 that I bought used. It's still running strong, but I wanted to treat myself to a new unit. The Racilio Silvia is a sturdy machine, built with stainless steel, and commercial parts
