I can recommend a Raspberry Pi 4 with the ConBee II ZigBee module and Aeotec Z-Stick 7+ Zwave module running Home Assistant. Thats what I'm using, get some USB extension cables with those if you decide on getting them as the frequencies seem to overlap and disturb each other. On the software side I can recommend Zigbee2mqtt and Zwave2mqtt.

We recently moved into a new house where the previous owner installed a bunch of home automation hardware (ecobee 4, lutron motion switches, tons GE Enbright Z-Wave dimmers), but took whatever hub they were using with them. In previous houses, I've run a mix of IoT devices and am looking to bring it all together with HA, but I need some sort of Z-Wave hub to control all of the lighting.

I see that Samsung no longer makes SmartThings, but that Aeotec is taking over that role. Their hub doesn't release until 15 Aug, so I'm wondering if I should go with that, or find something else. What say you?

P.S. I looked at the GE switches and none of them have the QR code shown in the marketing photos. Is that going to be a problem adopting them to whatever hub I select?

New home, need a new hub

Surprise! Unlike previous RPi models that I have experienced, Pi4 REQUIRES a new OS. (Product Description states “Complete compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi products”) If one tries to use an existing NOOBs or SD card from an operational Pi0 or Pi3, this unit will fail to boot. Luckily a claim that the unit is defective (as it appeared) met with outstandingly swift replacement. When I got the replacement it did the same thing, prompting me to do proper diagnostics

A Google search for “pi4 fails to boot” brings several results. One of which is from PiHut so I followed it

 They plainly state “Operating System - Only the latest operating system release will work on the new Raspberry Pi 4 (at time of writing NOOBS v3.1.1). This will also need to be a fresh install, not used with a previous model of Raspberry Pi” For casual observers, this OS’s name is Buster, not Stretch so even an update/upgrade cycle won’t do it

Sorry everyone, I am trying to get started building my smart home system. I have no idea what I should order for Hardware. From what I can see it looks like i need a Raspberry PI 4. But after looking at their website there are many add-on boards, Chips, Memory cards, and cases to house the board's. I would like to know from those of you that are experienced with the Pi and Home Assistant, What do you consider to be the Ultimate Hardware setup to take full advantage of all that Home Assistant has to offer. Any advice would be appreciated.

What Exactly should I use for hardware?

 After a little research I discovered other people are having this issue using Raspian.

This is my first Raspberry Pi and it has been a nightmare. My plan was to use this with a monitor but that has proved to be unsuccessful. I've tried micro HDMI to VGA adapter, micro HDMI to DVI cable and micro HDMI to HDMI cable with no success. All I get is a "no signal detected" error

how to resize SD card after upgrading to something bigger?

this is a great small computer right out of the box for light weight computing the only reason I gave less then five stars was the price I could have got a better deal from Amazon if I had waited a day or two

 The pie handles it all very well with rare instances of lag or a moment of unresponsiveness, but its not often and easy for me to work around. The Raspi-Config settings allow me to bypass the HDMI sound setting and force the audio through analog which is nice! There is also an app that allows you to switch your default monitor its simple and straight forward. I would highly recommend this for anyone seeking a legitimate credit card sized PC. Looking forward to the next Pie release as this one was a game changer
