The REI Flash 55 is an inexpensive, lightweight, and well-designed backpacking backpack. It weighs a mere 2.6 pounds. And, it can comfortably carry loads up to 30 pounds. The Packmod system enables you to customize the pack for your needs by moving or eliminating virtually all external pockets and straps. We particularly loved this feature. There are two "extra" side pockets between the water bottle pockets and the front stretch pocket. These extra pockets are super handy and a unique use of space, essentially doubling the external storage capacity. The side bottle pockets are the most easily accessible in the group, too. Since bottles go in vertically, there is no inference with arm swing. Because they sit low on the pack, water bottles can easily be removed and replaced with one hand. 
When you design a product to be lightweight, it's common for performance to suffer in another way. Lightweight packs are often more expensive, less durable, and less supportive. The Flash 55 does a great job of keeping the price low, but the durability and support issues are still true. We would try to avoid rubbing into rocks with this pack, or you may end up with some holes &#40;as we did&#41;. We've seen these packs last 1000s of miles, so durability isn't a huge issue, but don't go dragging it through any boulder fields. We also would have liked to have carried a little more than 30 pounds from time to time, but being able to do so would require a more robust suspension and add to the pack's baseline weight.

 I am 5'7 right about 165 pounds and this one fit just right. You want to make sure you get size, because this pack series does not allow for any adjustability in the shoulder straps or um. The waist belt so definitely go by and get fitted. I started off with the small and, although i could wear it, it just didn't

 Straps work the best and it's definitely not as padded as my osprey atmos, but on a recent 40 mile trip up at standing indian, i found it to be really comfortable. Also, the the waist belt has really adequate padding here. It'S not excessive, but it was plenty. The other thing i really like is this mesh material on the backing here between you and the the foam padding of the of the back pads there's about a inch indentation here between some some areas

 I did take the brain. I just can't get away from having extra pockets and places to put things it does have, what they call a weather, shield, coating or material that they're using and um. I didn't have any rain on this last trip, so i can't tell you how that is, but it would buy you a little bit of time before you able to stop and put on your rain cover, so all in all really pleased. There'S um! I like these big pockets on the sides

Use a bic lighter instead of the fire starter, invest in a quality sleeping pad with like a Nemo alpine (can use in winter) it’s way more comfortable than what you selected. Go with the Tungsten 2p tent, it’s a quality tent that will last. You don’t have to be ultralight but you should seriously take into consideration the weight of the items and more importantly the size of the items in making your decision on what to buy. You won’t need that whole cook set, it’s going to take up a lot of space

Howdy! As the title states, I am hoping to use REI's sale this year to get a decent budget friendly backpacking set up going. I have never once gone on a backpacking trip and the longest hike I have gone on is 7 or so miles. I live in the PNW, I am 5'11 and around 230 but hoping to shave off another ten pounds in the next month or two. I already have a decent pair of hiking boots and socks along with a nalgene. I certainly will need to get hiking clothes as well. I am hoping for a few simple 1-2 night trips over this summer to get into the groove of things. I think I have a semi decent list going, I am okay with spending $1k to $1.2k as I know this will see a lot of use. I picked the North Face One bag as I want to eventually be getting in some fall and winter trips and I imagine it will pay for itself in time.

As for the tent, how are Marmot tents? I see all of the REI tents have sold out since the sale had started. I don't really know what I am missing but I imagine its quite a bit. Is a Jetboil a half bad idea?

New to backpacking, working on my first gear set

 Low on the back pad is some foam padding that for what ever reason kept digging into my back on the hike. I kept talking off the pack and readjusting the load but couldn’t get it to stop. Some other concerns were some of the materials seemed a bit cheap like the mesh on the exterior pouch on the back. Not the worst for the money and REI stands behind their products

Undone when, on the trail, but this little yellow guy comes right out and you can slide this out and move it to a different shoulder uh, if you so please, which is nice. You could also add something ostensibly to this pack too, to the right side and then on the hip belts, which i'll show more in uh when it's on my person, but we've got a side zipper

 Oh, that's shaky video holy cats um, so this little carabiner i put on now. This is supposed to work where you take this loop it through like this, and the weight of it is gon na keep it there, but it sure does not work like that. I wish it was a buckle. A buckle would be nice or some other option

 The hip belt foaming and the back piece are all integrated in one um got a belt buckle for the straps up. Here, we've got a sternum, strap. We'Ve got two lift loaders hook here hook here. This is a medium size, i'm five five eight

REI Co-op Flash 55 Backpack Review

After much deliberation and no real limitation on budget I ended up with the REI Flash 55 for my JMT thru hike. Couldn’t have asked for a better bag. I was impressed with the weight and and functionality compared to the rest of the market.

How come REI isn't embracing ultralight or quilts?

 I ran to get those after my first hike. Thankfully it was a short hike. 4. I recommend buying your gel inserts and ordering 2-3 sizes to “try before you buy” since you don’t get charged for any of you return them within the 7 day period and only pay for the pair you keep

 3. I recommend removing the inserts and getting gel inserts as the heal and arch are not super supportive once you break them in. I ran to get those after my first hike. Thankfully it was a short hike

I love this hiking boot. I used this to hike around Alaska. It was warm and comfortable. The laces are long enough for me

 As far as how it fits a broad range of people, the next thing I want to talk about is the things that didn't really work out for me and there's only two of them and the first one is the trekking pole attachment. So you can stick your trekking poles into here and then there is actually a little loop attachment thing that you can put around your trekking poles to keep them attached to the pack allegedly, but that has not worked for me at all. I lost it on the trail I had my trekking poles ripped out off my pack when I was on that trip with the Afra mentioned willows, so the willows just grabbed my trekking poles and ripped them off pack. I'Ve never had that happen before with any other trekking pole attachment

 I went with waist measurements that were actually quite big so for the medium that I have here in the men's it bottoms out at 32 inches. So I'm lucky, I have a 33 inch waist, but for some of the slimmer people out there, which I think there's a lot of people under 32 inch waist that have a 19 inch torso size, you're gon na be out of luck, and I looked at the Comments for the women's pack on re eyes website as well and women are having the same problem. The waist strap just didn't cinch up tight enough. If you have wear a slimmer build

 I have troubles finding packs that fit well. For example, Osprey packs are loved by tons and tons of people, but they just don't fit my body type right, whereas the REI flash fits me really really well, I have a 19 inch torso and the medium fits great and I think it has a design that Will fit a lot of people really? Well, I think it's a very versatile design and I don't think you're gon na have troubles like you do with some other packs and brands out there with fit so definitely make sure to go. Try it out. I think that's the most important thing when buying a pack is to try it on with Wayne it and walk around and make sure that it fits you, but I think the REI flash 55 series is gon na, be one of those better packs

REI FLASH 55 Pack - Long Term Review

Some tips: go for a pack with well cushioned shoulder straps and hip straps. Make sure it has weight loaders to adjust your load. 

I currently have an Osprey Atmos 65 that I have been using for about 6 years now.  It weighs 78.72 oz which seems to be on the heavy side.  I am 53 y/o male, 6'3", weighing in at about 185 lbs and in good shape.  No back or joint issues.  I do like my comfort, but I'm getting tired of lugging around all the extra weight.

Lately, I've been considering buying a UL backpack to shed some weight but I am concerned with my perceived lack of comfort and stability of UL packs.  At first glance, the packs I have found look like a giant bulbus compression sack tied to your back with string that will cut off circulation and dramatically change the center of gravity of your body.

For those who switched from a traditional to UL backpack: 

1. What was your experience?
2. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
3. Do you switch back and forth between the two?  When and why?

 Next, the tongue attaches to the sides all the way up to the top of the laces so, if the fabric is waterproof, they will remain waterproof. Finally, the upper interior of the boot is soft and there is cushioning around the ankle and heel, which is what I was looking for.

Good  overall

 I find that with the traditional pack, i'm unable to reach my water bottle in the side, pockets and i'm having to ask somebody to help me, which is a huge pain when you're on a hike, especially if you're drinking lots of water. There'S a lot of storage. On this pack, so you have the water bottle pockets, you have the side pockets, you have your hip belt pockets and then the lid also opens up here so that you can store things up here and the lid is waterproof, which is a really nice feature. If you want to store some of your more delicate items and then there's a big stretchy mesh pocket on the front of the pack, i find that the flash 55 has the perfect amount of storage enough

 I don't think there's a better frame pack on the market and for that reason the rei. Flash 55 gets a gear priority. I use this pack in order to carry all those extra items i need in order to be comfortable on the trail and that gear list is, is pretty fun and pretty cool so go check it out

 You may have to tighten them over the over the course of the day. Those are the two big negatives with this pack, but there's one more. I want to talk about because it may be really important to some people and that's the trekking pole attachment system. You have a nice loop on the bottom here, but then there's a bungee that you're supposed to attach to one of the loops here and then you put that around your trekking pole and that holds it in, but that's a it's a really poorly designed system

 I put 50 pounds into this pack for a full day of backpacking and while it wasn't super comfortable, it was still manageable and i think that this pack is great. If you are carrying loads over 40 pounds, it's going to carry that no problem, and if you're around that 30 to 35 pound range, then you're gon na be so comfortable in this pack. Comfort is one of the things that i think is one of the main benefits of the flash 55 fit wise. The flash 55 comes in three sizes for the men, small medium large
