If you often find yourself traveling with heavy outdoor gear, the tapered shape of the REI Ruckpack may be just what you're looking for. This helps keep the pack from getting top-heavy, creating an uneven weight distribution and causing discomfort or lack of balance. This travel backpack is the perfect airplane-to-trail bag for those trips when you are pressed for time or space. The comfortable harness system is completely stowable for long car trips or when checking your bag, and the easily accessible and organized side pockets are great for your travel essentials.
While we appreciate the side pocket organization, we found that some of the smaller pockets inside this bag are too shallow to feasibly hold anything. The shallow pocket theme extends to the two water bottle pockets on the sides, although these have improved since the last model. Most bottle sizes will fit but are not particularly secure when the bag isn't upright. The harder hip pads take a moment to get used to, so don't be surprised if you feel a little discomfort when you first put the pack on. The discomfort only lasted a few uses and, once broken in, offers ample support.

 There'S a lot of loops and fabric straps on the outside of this bag that you're, probably not gon na use for travel, but would come in really handy if you're using this bag on the trail for hiking. There'S these bungee cords up here. It'S got fabric loops down here, there's sixteen hidden daisy chains and a couple other more bungee, straps and loops, so there's probably about 30 or so different, bungee, cord straps and loops and the outside of this bag. Again, probably more than you're gon na need in your standard, in addition to those straps and loops, the outside of this pack also has two water bottle pockets, one on each side

 The fabric loop for the backpack straps and the rainfly most of the exterior organization on this pack is going to come from this top brain pocket and then these two kind of long skinny side pockets. The one on the left side has a bunch of little compartments in there for travel documents, electronics, passport, etc, and then the pocket on the other side just opens up. It has a small mesh separator and you can actually access the inside of the bag from that pocket. One of the great features on the ruck pack or the back packing straps REI makes a lot of camping and backpacking gear and they put a lot of the same features into the ruckpack as they do when they're backpacking backpacks

 It has two compression straps on the side, as well as a top brain pocket. These two long side, pockets that run the length of the pack and then the bottom of the pack is where it's stored. The fabric loop for the backpack straps and the rainfly most of the exterior organization on this pack is going to come from this top brain pocket and then these two kind of long skinny side pockets. The one on the left side has a bunch of little compartments in there for travel documents, electronics, passport, etc, and then the pocket on the other side just opens up

 It has these pretty big, thick backpack straps, there's a lot of buckles and straps and attachments on the outside of the bag that caused this thing to weigh in at about four point: two: five pounds: I have the men's version of the ruck pack and one of The reasons why this is kind of a good overall backpack for a lot of people is because it comes in two sizes, there's the men's version, which fits me pretty good at about 510 and then there's the women's version, which will fit torso length and hip ratio That are a little bit smaller than this bag. There'S a lot of features in this backpack that are more akin to a backpacking backpack, as opposed to a travel bag. REI Ruckpack 40 Review

Looking for a little convincing one way or the other, went to REI and played around with a few bags, these were by far my 2 favorites, I didn't mind the REI rucksack either tho. I'm not looking for a "complete" one bag but one that will be a 75ish% bag since I always travel with an actual carry on so my backpack needs to bey "personal item" what I noticed was I liked the look and front pocket on Cotopaxi a lot, fit a little weird on the back tho but usually don't hike or walk huge distances with my big bags when i travel and the laptop sleeve seems... small at best, but I usually put my laptop in my carry on. I think it looks stylish AF. Osprey looks rugged...just like my osprey hiking packs and felt like a cloud on my back. The quick access pocket left me a little wanting but not bad, odd water bottle placement and organization inside isn't as smooth but noticably larger. I think I'd love either of them but just need a nudge one way or the other. Fwiw cotopaxi is $136 and Farsight 40 is $119

  There is a spot where the contour of the straps juts in and I found that this rubbed on my collarbone.  I couldn't seem to find a fit that avoided this issue, and it is not something I've run into with other packs.  I am small framed through the shoulders, so this may not be an issue with larger builds, but it would keep me from using this pack on long hikes.

, So that bag is going to sit a little bit higher on your back, which helps distribute the load. Small note. On the women's focus version, if the pack is a little bit higher on your back, you have a ponytail or long hair that can stick right into the back of the pack. Hannah can verify [ Hannah ] ``, Yep !'', Starting with the straps we've got some Decent density foam going on here that helps with a comfortable carry

 We were a little bit confused on this, however, because the anchor is about halfway down the strap., And this is especially noticeable on the men's version.. When you pull and tighten this, the strap can kind of get crumpled up

, Just to make it more functional, with the intended use case of each side.. Moving on to the main access of the pack, these zippers here are lockable, which is a nice additional security feature.

REI Ruckpack 40 Review | One Bag Travel Backpack (Men’s & Women’s Version)

I’ve used a Rei Ruckpack 40 for 2 months of INTL travel, including 2 weeks trekking to Mt. Everest. While I’m a semi-ultralight hiker back home (different pack), the Ruckpack 40 was fine for being about + 1.75lbs more than my actual backpacking pack (Granite Gear Crown 2 60L)

My advice would be to stash some of your city clothes (heavier cotton, sweaters, etc) at a hostel while you’re hiking. Many places don’t mind as long as you plan on returning.

 I'm bringing in a little bag I have my passport, my wallet, a really sloppy written itinerary. got a piece of paper with names and addresses and numbers I Also have a PDF in my phone, a pin phone charger, snacks, sunglasses, two little stones this is all extra SD cards. these are the two sweaters and I'm bringing for the entire trip GoPro a standard lens from my camera and I'm going to bring the wide-angle lens that's attached to it right now an eye mask, tissues Kendall and journal my toiletry bag I'll show you what's in here and then I bring this extra copy of my passport sleeve in both of my bags I Put my toiletries, my liquids and all my electronics and my little bag for the flight. Just so I don't have to go into my main bag when I'm going through security I Almost thought I have a spare portable charger for my phone in case the battery dies I don't the worry about it charges my phone like two-and-a-half times

 it's like velcroed clothes if you take it undone. there's a strap where you can zip it around and it covers up all the straps. so it's now on like dufflebag moon. The zipper to the main compartment consists all behind your head through security and there's two little spots where you can fit a lock through

 and I like it because you can kind of shove them into the little holes to hide it so you don't have all these straps poking out. There's lots of little loops here so you can put a carabiner on this side of the bag. it opens up. It's like a perfect compartment for my Kindle I'm just gonna bring it on the little bag with me, some slots for pins, this one and then otherwise just this other nice deep pocket that's separated from the rest of the bag

Minimal Travel Packing | New REI Ruckpack 40 L Review

 A lot of the problems are related to weight savings, which makes sense for a hiking like day pack.

 The water bottle spots on the sides are big and can be tightened, very nice. Even that front netting is useful sometimes.  But I don't really hike, I bought the pack as a daily driver and it's not suited. The pack just isn't robust enough, but then it's a little too tall so it flops over when you set it down

The backpack design is modern and functional, but too long (24 inches) for carry-on size for travel. The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm), including handles and wheels. I returned the bag and will be leveraging my tried and true REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack (20 to 21 inches long) instead.

I'm a light traveler and do not travel with any checked luggage. For more, comfort, versatility and the ability to travel through airports, ferries, cabs, trains quickly and ease is absolutely critical. I need to carry my bag and run around without any impediments.
