 As I say, you can go to this darker kind of hammered heavier area and get quite nice ride patterns with a lot of clarity. The moment you start to come out across the taper to the sort of the middle towards the outside edge and you get that nice kind of wash, then of course, when you crash them, you get this really nice kind of quick explosive dark trashy sound. So very, very dexterous. And I would suggest that if you've got the AAX versions, then definitely check these out because they would sit really, really nicely

 It seems if you remember we interviewed Jojo a couple of issues back and he talked about the development of these symbols and he did say that it took kind of a little while for him to kind of get the symbols to where he wanted them to be and I have to say already just the few minutes that we've had just sort of checking them out they are very very complex symbol so I'm not surprised it took them a little while to figure out. I'm just going to quickly take this off the stand I just want to show you basically as you can tell anyway the symbols in two sections you have this lathe section here and then you have this kind of raw darker section here that is basically just hand hammered and you can really feel when you move the symbol that this outer section is really quite thin there's quite a lot of give to that but the middle section is very very kind of rigid very controlled yeah rigid would probably be the best word I could come up with now the idea behind that is that then the bell section and the first half of the taper gives you kind of like your ride area and then this last sort of half of the of the of the symbols taper gives you kind of like the crash elements or the wash element if you want to ride that area too so again very very dexterous again a very complex symbol and as I say I'm sure that Jojo and Mark Love and the people at Sabian probably scratched their heads for a little while trying to come up with this but it's definitely a lot darker than the AAX models that were previously available so if you have those and you're looking for something a little darker a little trashier maybe a little more complex and you want to mix them up or you just want a darker version then there you are you have the 19 inch and the 22 inch version so let's take a little listen to what they sound like oh before I forget I'm not going to sound anything like Jojo I'll make that right clear right from the word go but there are some absolutely stunning videos of Jojo and Mark Giuliana playing one of these symbols between the two of them on the Sabian website there's a link please check out there's four there's a total of four videos in fact and everyone is just jaw on the floor heart-stopping to watch so please do check those out in fact you might even want to skip what I'm going to do and just go straight there frankly but there you go any minute in time I will have a go at giving you some idea of what the HHX Omni Symbols sound like so Okay, well, I have to say, just in the short period of time that we've had these here in the review studio, these are remarkably dexterous cymbals. I also really like the way that they work together. As a pair, they work great, but also just the fact that there's so many different sounds that you can draw from them

My cymbals comprise A & K Zildjian, HH & HHX Sabian and Meinl Byzance. I have managed to procure most of my equipment at huge discounts and they suited the sonic demands I had, thus I jumped for the same, brands irrespective. Hence, I would definitely buy any additional item, brand irrespective, as long as it sounded great or the deal was too darn good.

I get having a preference, and I have mine, a lot of my cymbals are Meinl because I really like them, and most of my heads are from Evans since I like their products, but still I have Tama, Drumcraft and Pearl drums in my kit, Evans and Remo heads (no 2 models are equal), Meinl, Sabian, Diril, Istanbul Mehmet cymbals and Zultan, because I feel they give me the sound I'm searching for, but a lot of the times I see people so obsessed with having everything of the same brand, and by talking to them I see a lot of the times they sacrifice sound for it. 

I wanna know what you think about it. If you have everything matching in your set, why and if you don't the same question. Also, if you saw a drum, a head or a cymbal that would crack your matching set, but would be the perfect sound for you would you just "crack" your matching set?

 14 inch were a little higher in pitch and brighter but without losing any of the warmth that the 15 inch hats possess. Each of the crashes opened up really quickly and had a quick decay and were tonally really nicely pitched with a controlled wash and a hint of trashiness that reminded me of some of Sabian's fantastic legacy crashes. The 19 inch was a particular favorite of ours in the studio although the 22 inch crash also impressed us by being very musical and easily capable of doubling up as a ride in some situations. The rides had great stick definition accompanied by a consistent but not overpowering wash

What would everyone say the best sabian cymbal series is I’m looking to by some new cymbals, I currently have the sbr ones are they any good? I have read that hhx ones are good?

 These are not at all that, these are very smooth sounding, very like traditional sounding, but without all that harsh mid-range and with a really, really smooth top end, that's what I'm hearing at least. And they really do sound like do-anything cymbals, like you could pretty much tackle any genre with these, whereas the cymbals that I typically use are maybe a little less flexible, I go for maybe more particular sounds, but what I decided to do today is take my I guess most normal sounding setup of Minols, which is still a little bit weird. On the Sabian side, I've got the 15 inch hats, the 18 and 19 inch thin crashes, and then the 22 inch medium ride, and then for my Minols, I have my hi-hats are a 16 inch traditional medium thin crash over a 16 inch extra dry thin crash, so a little bit of a weird combo there. A 19 inch Bizant's traditional crash, a 20 inch Bizant's brilliant medium crash, and a 22 inch tradition ride

 So definitely not an apples to apples comparison, some of the sizes are different, but like I said, it's my most normal sounding setup, and those are all cymbals that I have really carefully hand selected and just sound perfect to my ears, but again, it's my personal taste. So let's go back to back and I'm just going to kind of loosely mess around with both different sets and I'm curious to know what you hear.  Alright, so I know I pulled you in with a bit of a spicy title, but I just want to say right off the bat that I'm not trying to make anyone mad and that I love all cymbals from all cymbal companies, but the setup today is that I was demoing these Sabin HHX Complex cymbals for West Coast Drum Shop next door, and I was thinking to myself as I was playing them, these are probably the best sounding Sabians, or at least my favorite Sabians that I've heard in a long, long time, and just to my ears for my personal preference, although I love Sabin the company and I know they make amazing cymbals, their sonic signature has been my least favorite, just for what I'm looking for personally, until I started listening to these, so I thought it might be kind of interesting to pit these against what I normally use, which is typically vinyl, and just give sort of some thoughts and I guess a mini review on the HHX Complex line in general. Now there are plenty of vinyl cymbals that I don't like the sound of, but on average, vinyl I think has the most cymbals that sound pleasing and interesting to my ear, and on the flip side, Sabian in the past, and to a lesser extent, Zildjian has had less interesting or sounds that just don't jive as well with what I'm looking for. Now of course there are many exceptions to this, there are plenty of beautiful, amazing sounding Zildjian and Sabian cymbals, and a lot of my favorite artists play Zildjian and Sabian, so I don't inherently have a problem with either of their sonic signatures or the companies themselves, they just haven't really meshed with what I'm looking for. And I feel like recently both companies, I guess in the past few years, have come out with lines that sound maybe not more vinyl-ish to my ears, but they just seem to de-emphasize the things that I haven't liked about their cymbals in the past, and what I'm talking about is like AA's and even HH's and Zildjian A's, and to a lesser extent A Customs, have all sounded sort of harsh in the mid-range or in the upper mids, and what I like a lot about these HHX complexes is that they seem to not be harsh at all, they really de-emphasize that mid-range that just comes across as abrasive to my ears, and they're still very dark with a really smooth top end, and what surprised me was that because they're called complex, usually complex or anything that's described as like esoteric or anything like that, usually means that it's going to end up sounding trashy, whether that's for better or for worse is up to you

I'm looking to simplify my cymbal set up down to just two cymbals rather than my current over the top 5 cymbal assembly.  I'd like to have just my hats and then a crash and a crash/ride.  So I'm looking for suggestions of some very versatile cymbals for a minimalist set up.  The music I play is a mix of classic and modern rock if that makes a difference.

[REQUEST] The search for cymbals!

 Complex they're well a little more complex, a little more hammering, open up a little bit more. This particular setup has the 15 inch medium hats, 18 inch thin crash, 21 inch thin ride which is just a beauty, 16 inch thin crash and then an 18 medium crash. And the thin is gorgeous. We had somebody here mention it sounded like an evolution but a little bit heavier and I couldn't agree with that more

 We did two different setups today with the complex cymbals and then the thins but we actually threw a medium in on this one because it blended well with this particular setup. So I don't want to get too heavy on the specs and all the changes but let me just say they completely revamped the whole thing and all the details are available on our website and of course on Sabian's website. What today is about is just what do these things sound like and my reaction is just 128% positive. These are just awesome

I was a huge fan of the HHX to begin with so it's kind of a loaded thing but in my opinion the line was very cluttered and not very organized. They just basically trimmed up their line quite a bit and they have made it much more easy to sort of to navigate
