 I was skeptical of the S22 Plus at first because I felt like the regular 6.1-inch S22 would be big enough for most people. But now that I've spent more time with it, I'm really liking that Samsung decided to offer a middle option. The screen is substantially bigger, but it doesn't feel too big to use with one hand

I could easily see how the Ultra's massive 6.8-inch screen could be too impractical for some people, so I really feel like the S22 Plus is the perfect middle ground

 As for zoomed-in photos, I couldn't tell much of a difference between the S22 Plus and regular S21 so far. We'll be doing more camera testing, so check out our full written review for more updates. The entire Galaxy S22 lineup runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 chip. That processor should bring general improvements to performance and things like playing games, but also specific features that rely on machine learning, like camera features

 This makes the operating system feel fast and fluid, but be warned, it can shorten battery life. But the big change that Samsung made to the display this year is a new feature called Vision Booster. They look the same at first, but take a good look, and you'll notice the S22 does a better job of retaining detail in the snow, whereas the S21's snow is much softer. As for nighttime photos, there's good news and there's bad news

 I tested a pink S22+ and a green S22. The pink is a delicate pastel and the green is a sober dark-forest color.

Night shots also work faster on both the S22+ and S22 than on the S21. In low-light environments, the S22 models took two seconds to record a shot, whereas the S21 took three seconds; the images from the S22 phones look better, too. 

The new Qualcomm X65 modem is absolutely a reason to upgrade to the S22+ or any of the latest Galaxy phones. This chip is the first to support AT&T's new 3.45GHz spectrum, which is set to enhance the carrier's performance later in 2022. Plus, it offers better reception in areas with a weak signal compared with previous models that lack the X65 modem

The Galaxy S22+ has a 50MP main camera that takes 12MP photos using a four-pixel binning method; a 12MP ultra-wide lens; a 10MP, 3x optical zoom sensor; and a 10MP front-facing camera. The smaller S22 has the same camera system.

 This year, there is a night portrait mode too, subject separation is great, but like during the day, the subject looks softer when shot through the telephoto cam. With night mode off, the S22 Plus's ultra-wide cam doesn't impress. These photos are dark and noisy, with mushy detail. Night mode has a profound effect on the quality

 Probably it's the telephoto cam which is the biggest improvement, with its native 3x zoom. But with all that said, if you're not looking to upgrade from the S21 Plus, and just want to get the latest Samsung flagship, the S22 Plus is worth recommending.  They have good detail and dynamic range, a bright exposure, and a mostly faithful color rendition. There is plenty of noise though. With night mode enabled, zoomed shots are sharper and have more detail in both the shadows and the highlights. There is some extra sharpening here just like on the main cam

 You get a fresh design, which is supposed to be quite durable. The M-LED screen is smooth and super bright, the stereo speakers sound great, and you get a flagship chipset and an excellent set of cameras. If you're comparing this to last year's model though, the differences are pretty small. A brighter screen, slightly more powerful chipset, new Gorilla Glass, and the 45W charging, which doesn't actually charge the phone any faster

 I'd also like to see battery test results from the S22 Plus that more closely match the similarly priced iPhone 13 Pro. And the $1,000 price can still make the Galaxy S22 Plus a tough sell at a time when midtier phones in the $600 to $700 range, like the Pixel 6 and Galaxy S21 FE, are improving.

 Since the Galaxy S22 Plus is the same price as the iPhone 13 Pro, it would have been nice to see similar results. (The Galaxy S22 Plus and iPhone 13 Pro had the screen set to adaptive 120Hz during this test.)

 Samsung's older phone focused more clearly on some of the other flowers in the image, like the red carnation, but I generally think the S22 Plus' photo looks better. It also looked more colorful than the image captured on a Google Pixel 6 Pro.

Now for the bad news: The Galaxy S22 Plus struggles to focus sharply on still objects in the dark, just like the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Take a look at the photos of the owl kitchen timer below, which was taken in my apartment with all the lights turned off.

Battery life is mediocre while the phone is being actively used. Under screen fingerprint reader is harder and more awkward than a read fingerprint reader (although it does have the small benefit of being accessible while the phone is laying down). Samsung's UI has a few issues that imo make it worse (noticeably app search on their launcher is often incredibly slow). Screen, camera, and computing power are all great, but don't make up for what the issues I think make a mediocre experience when paying a premium over a midrange device

Ok experience at a premium price point

If the S22 ultra has a camera at parity with the Pixel 6 Pro I'm never going back to a Google phone again. This implementation of Android 12 is a joke, as well as it being launched in beta condition. Google removes features and usability every year while Samsung is inventing them.
