 I'd say the main selling point for me is just how comfortable they are for walking in. I've had too many days in Scotland where just horribly sore feet at the end of a long day in the mountains, these I have never had an uncomfortable or sore day. There's a tiny little bit of bend in the sole which you think might compromise their climbing ability, but I don't think it does, you can climb super hard in these. That's enough just to give it a nice sort of roll to the rocker, you know, when you're walking along you don't feel like you're walking with planks of wood on your feet, you feel like you've actually got a boot on that flexes and bends with your foot, makes a huge difference for those long winter days when you're just trudging to the climb and trudging back again

 So yeah, I would say the main selling point of these boots is just how comfortable they are and that's partly due to how lightweight they are, you can walk for hours, you barely notice them on your feet, pair them with a pair of lightweight crampons like the Greuvel Airtex or something, you've got a super lightweight set up for mountaineering all day long. So these are lightweight, incredibly waterproof, very technical and very comfortable for walking in. I'd say the main selling point for me is just how comfortable they are for walking in. The Scarpa Phantom Tech Mountain Boots - 2015 Review | Outdoor 2015

 The change is small but noticeable, and I find these more comfortable to walk in, with perhaps slightly more flex for a more natural gait. Otherwise, it’s the same fit we’ve come to expect from Scarpa, a touch on the wider side, softly lined, with good arch support even with the stock insoles. Another noticeable change is the height of the interior cuff: the new boot is a bit lower, about 2cm when comparing my two size 43.5 examples

 Compared to the Tech’16, these new boots feel a touch wider in the heel but about the same in forefoot volume. For me this translates into a slightly more comfortable and better-fitting boot. The change is small but noticeable, and I find these more comfortable to walk in, with perhaps slightly more flex for a more natural gait. Otherwise, it’s the same fit we’ve come to expect from Scarpa, a touch on the wider side, softly lined, with good arch support even with the stock insoles

 At first I thought this would be a detriment as upon first impression it feels less supportive but that notion disappears as soon as you start climbing. The lower cuff feels less restrictive when flexed sideways, making the Tech’19 feel very light and nimble when climbing on rock, and doesn’t appear to have had any noticeable impact on calf support when front-pointing (this lines up with my impressions of the very-low Mammut Nordwand Light Mid which has a very low cuff but frontpoints just as well as much taller boots). The new, lower, boot on the right. So in terms of overall fit the Tech’19 seems to be an improvement

 What I do feel is noticeable is better breathability — after a day of dry tooling at just-over-0C, my feet are considerably less sweaty and damp than they would be in the Tech’16. Attribute this to the lower cuff, better waterproof-breathable membrane, less neoprene-like materials, I really don’t know, but I do know that my feet and socks are less sweaty at the end of the day and I really appreciate that. And in a last bid for gaitered-single-boot supremacy, the Tech’19 retails for less than the previous version: $699 USD or $799 Canadian (us Canadians are getting a deal when you factor in the currency exchange). This undercuts most competitors by almost 25% which is a remarkable achievement for such a high-tech handmade Italian boot

 With research showing that it takes around 5x the energy to carry a weight on our feet as opposed to our back – I want light boots and so do you! But as consumers we want it all, we want it light and we want it to be warm and waterproof and we want it to LAST! Well I’m pleased to say with the new Phantom Tech you can have all that. 110g less per boot than the old model and way better! Rock climbing in crampons So do what do we get?  SCARPA say: “A new waterproof gaiter design uses PU Tek technology to create a lightweight but extremely durable outer with a high degree of dexterity and feel, while also helping to reduce the overall weight by 110g, making the Phantom Tech the lightest boot in its class.”  I’ve found these to be incredibly waterproof and snowproof, as well as durable. They also seem to breathe better than any other boot I’ve used and this means less sweaty feet, and in turn, warmer feet as the moisture inside your boots makes it harder to keep your feet warm SCARPA use a Primaloft 100 insulation layer inside and incorporate Primaloft Silver yarns, increasing the warmth and breathability of the boot
