The very end of this year's somewhat unexpectedly, at least for me, extensive look at Bluetooth active noise cancelling headphones. And today we're going to talk about these

 And although they sound different to the PX8, I like them as much as the PX8, which was also a surprise finding. And that's mainly because of their micro dynamics and their really terrific layer separation and the kick in the low end, which doesn't sort of leak into, I guess, what you would call the sort of, not even the mid bass, but it's really just the sub bass that kicks a little bit harder on the Sennheiser, whereas with the PX8, it's all of the bass that kicks harder. But I also pick up the Sennheiser because I prefer controlling my Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones with my hand on the side touch panel. It's much more convenient for me than having to kind of root around on the back of an ear cup to find the right button to press

 They sound more internally spacious when listening to Steffi's The Red Hunter, which is a fantastic electro album. And they lend far greater dynamic flair to Art Brute's Bang Bang Rock and Roll, which really, I've got to say, really needs that dynamic flair. But I think most impressive of all is the Sennheiser can do all of this, offer all of this for less money than the Sony and the Bowers. It's almost 80 euros less retail price than those rivals

 They really are super impressive. Although I don't think they're not really on par with wired headphones yet, not in some respects, but the active noise cancellation component of a Bluetooth headphone I think is really pivotal to musical enjoyment, because if we can dial down the background noise, as I've said before, we don't need to crank the volume on the music quite as much.  The Bose model edges out the Momentum 4 in terms of ANC, but we can at least argue that Sennheiser's pair sounds the best of the bunch.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West&rsquo;s &ldquo;No Church in the Wild,&rdquo; the kick drum loop receives an ideal high-mid presence that allows its attack to retain its punchiness, while the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat come across with an ideal depth. The sub-bass doesn't sound overly emphasized, but no one will accuse the headphones of skimping on subwoofer-like thump. We can tell that the pair enhances the lows somewhat, but they don't add sub-bass where it doesn't exist (unlike plenty of modern headphones). The vocals on this track sound clear, with perhaps a bit of additional sibilance

 The drums on this track sound bass-boosted and heavy, but don&rsquo;t quite veer into unnaturally thunderous territory. Interestingly, the Bass Boost mode doesn&rsquo;t really add too much thunder, either, though it does beef up the lows somewhat. Callahan&rsquo;s baritone vocals sound rich and crisp, while the acoustic strums and higher-register percussive hits maintain a bright, detailed presence. If you want a more clinically accurate sound, you can dial back the lows slightly in the app&rsquo;s EQ, but as is, this is a balanced, if somewhat sculpted, sound signature

 Like that's double the battery life over current ANC headphones from Sony or Bose. It does take two hours to fully charge, but only 10 minutes of charging will give you six hours of playback in case you're in a pinch for time. So when it comes to good quality, higher-end ANC headphones, personally, I think the Momentum 4 has the rest beat for value hands down. You're simply getting more for your money

Like you get better battery life by a huge margin, better audio quality, and all the handy features from the phone app at a lower price. But sadly, something I haven't seen or heard other reviewers mention is that even after receiving like three or four firmware updates now, there's been and still are a fair amount of software bugs that I and like a lot of other users have been experiencing

 Now, I mainly tested it without using any EQ presets or bass boot mode adjustments, and so for the lows, I found that it's got a really nice strong low-frequency response to songs with a lot of bass. The mids are great with vocals and bring a lot of detail over the entire range, and the highs provide an awesome balance of treble, add some texture to the vocals and instruments, which overall brightens up the audio signature really nicely. It's just a crisp, clear and detailed sound signature with the ability to give you the rumble you might be looking for without any kind of distortion, even at max volume. Battery life is just bonkers

Sennheiser says at medium volume levels, we should get about 60 hours of playback, and that's with ANC turned on

 Finally, a proper charging indicator on a premium pair of active noise cancelling headphones. Look at this. When you plug them in with the USB-C cable, the 5 LED charging indicators start blinking one by one until it reaches a full charge. This makes so much sense, why do I not see more of something like this in the market? It's been a while since I saw a product that's got almost everything right and makes your jaw drop

 So now let's do a proper sound check near a very busy street. So earlier I said that this double tapping the side of the ear cup doesn't make sense because it pauses whatever you're listening to. But now I think it actually makes sense because then you can, when you're listening to something and it's on ANC, then when you double tap, then it goes to transparency mode and then you can, the music pauses, so then you can talk if you want to talk with someone. It's been a while since I saw a product that has got everything right and makes my jaw drop! Introducing the brand new Sennheiser Momentum 4 active noise canceling headphones. There are so many great things about the new Momentum 4 headphones and just a couple of not so great things. 

The biggest negative comment about these is that the earcup hole is quite narrow and small for people who have large ears. But the majority of people who are looking for a comfortable pair of active noise canceling headphones won't be disappointed with these. Even thought the earcups don't have a full tilt-adjustment to reduce the amount of pressure on the jawbone for those of us who are very sensitive, they are still so comfortable that even I can wear them all day long. 

Sennheiser could've paid more attention to these two things, but again there are so many great things about them such as a great ANC, stellar sound, reasonably good design, great mic quality, etc. that will make up for those couple of things. Also during a walk outside, with the transparency mode on, in the wind they kept increasing and decreasing the ANC. It was like the ANC was getting activated for one second and then the transparency mode was activated another second. This was kind of annoying to here, but as I'm writing this, there is a firmware update that improves the adaptive ANC. Have they made a fix for that problem already?

So here's an inconclusive list of pros and cons of the new Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones:

Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless Review | vs. Sony XM5

 Now this is totally subjective, so you'll like either the look of these or these, or like me, you might like both. When it comes to sound, I did really like the Momentum 3s, but it's that classic thing. When you AB test these against the brand new version, in this case, these do win. And the mid-range on these is even more pronounced than the 4s, and that has never really been my thing

 But if you like bass, these go really low as well. So on Unfinished Sympathy, that's another fantastic headphone testing track, by the way, just to get that bottom end tested out. But on that, that really deep 808 Subkick really rings true on these. It doesn't kind of muddy anything at all

 I think the Sennheiser Momentum 4s pull off a very neat trick. They give you flagship sound, noise cancelling, comfort, and epic battery life for less than 300 quid. And that's really refreshing in a world where you'll pay a lot more than that for the other flagship brands.  And of course you have the option of customizing the EQ settings to your liking. It was a pleasant listening experience as I tested it through various music genres. Overall I feel the headphone has tremendous value. It does compete on the higher end price range and I think this one stands out and should be on your list if you're looking for wireless headphones

Sennheiser Momentum 4 - Full Review (Music & Mic Samples)

Sennheiser is clearly happy to compete against the likes of Bose (the Bose QC 45 launched September 23, 2021 and cost $329 / &pound;329 / AU$499.95) and Sony in a price war, and it's safe to say that the gamble has paid off &ndash;&nbsp;and then some.&nbsp;

It may seem a small issue, but talking to someone when to you, it sounds as if your voice is stuck inside a jar, is weird. Sennheiser's excellent Sidetone gets rid of this problem and makes your conversations feel altogether more natural.

The keen-eyed will note that Sennheiser priced its newest over-ear wireless noise-cancelling headphones at $50 (or &pound;80) cheaper than the class-leading&nbsp;Sony WH-1000XM5 cans at launch, which regularly retail for $399 / &pound;380 / AU$550.&nbsp;
