I know there are some guys out there who do not like the Beta mics, they think they sound kind of too modern or sheeny, or they just don't like the frequency response, and they may prefer an Audix or something like that, a Heil, there's a lot of other great, you know, drum mic companies out there, but whatever you guys thoughts may be, definitely stick in the comments down below.  It doesn't come with any other mics, or stands, or cables, or anything like that, that you might get in these packages. So I see a lot of guys, you know, they go out, they buy, you know, a hundred and fifty dollar, you know, drum mic package from Digital Reference or whatever, they take it home and they try to use, and they go, well, it sounds okay, but I'm looking for something more. This is what you're looking for, at least in the world of kick drum mics. The other thing that I wanted to talk about a little bit is just why I think that this mic is one of the most brilliantly designed mics for this purpose

 The Beta 52 is a dynamic mic, but they've designed the diaphragm of this mic to work two things really, really well. First is low frequencies, so it's a really big diaphragm in there, it's gonna handle low frequencies really, really well, especially really low transients, like a kick drum, that is, after all, what it's designed for. And also, you know, it's convenient that it doesn't require phantom or anything like that, you can just plug it in and go, but it also is designed to handle very high SPL, sound pressure level, so you can put it right in front of a kick drum, right in front of a big bass amp, something like that, and not have to worry about it ever clipping or distorting. That is the first and kind of biggest point that you're gonna get with something like this, that you're not gonna get from one of these cheaper drum mic packages, is that SPL level

Hey everyone. I've recently been asked to record/mix a small band's album. I'm 17, I have access to pro tools and some plugins, and the band has said that they have the budget to rent microphones and fancy interface and whatnot. I have experience mixing my own music, I'm definitely not a professional but I think I do a decent job. The music I make is quite similar to this band's music so I'm familiar with the genre. 

I'd be recording and mixing vocals, guitar, bass and drums. (I've never recorded drums before)

How many mics should I record the drum kit with? What should I expect from a small band? Their music is alright but I don't want to give them a final product they don't like. 

Any general tips for a first gig would be appreciated too.

Advice on first engineering gig

 The onstage MS9411TB is a very heavy stable boom stand. That will handle a mic like this well. Last thing you will want is a good mic on a cheap stand. Mic + impact = bad news!

 The sound quality is excellent for this price point. It’s somewhat subjective as well but if this is your first jump into this market of live and recorded sound it’s a good place to start. Does better than this exist? Of course from Shure and others but you’ll definitely pay for it. The fact that this has a preset on Yamaha TF series mixers makes it easy to get started setting up

 (Kinda handy since fitting your hand inside to adjust isn’t easy). If you are using it outside the drum you can easily change angles and tighten the screw to save whatever angle you wish. The sound quality is excellent for this price point. It’s somewhat subjective as well but if this is your first jump into this market of live and recorded sound it’s a good place to start

Great kick drum mic value!

This is one of those mics that if it ever breaks, I would need a replacement immediately – on my old 8+ year old Beta 52A, the XLR male end kept coming loose - this was after hundreds of uses though - the reverse-thread screw on the *genuine* mics that holds the connector in place kept loosening which happens with most transported gear and, while easily being tightened back up, I finally ripped the whole connector out while taking a cable out. Once again, that’s after 8 continuous years of use and travel. I can re-solder it (and have done in the past) but I just don't have time or patience right now with the amount of gigs I am doing so I bought a nice, shiny new one…and I'll repair the old one and have two!  I've used a variety of mics on a kick in the past (AKG, Shure PG series, Sennheiser) and this is **the one**. This is the only mic that I’ve ever used that actually provides a balance of "woof" and "slap", even on a kick drum with NO sound hole in front! With the right amount of EQ/Compression, you can make a kick drum sound stadium-like on any sound system

As far as kick drum mics are concerned, this is **the one**!!!

My DW kick drum sounds 1000 times better with this mic. It produces the deep deep round kick drum sound that you only hear in night clubs that you can feel in your chest. Years ago I went to *NSYNC concert and loved loved the kick sound from the band and just now I am able to replicate the in your gut deep dancing kick drum sound with this BETA 52A mic. The low end on this mic is just insane

I now got rid of the subkick and the BETA 52 brought my kick drum to that *NSYNC level

Kick drum that sounds like what you hear in nightclubs.

I really like this mic. I have it in semi permanent loan from a friend who used to drum. Initially I did he snobby thing and said "wow look at how boosted the lows and highs are on that mic, I'd rather a natural sounding kick mic"… I'm over the elitist mentality. This mic just sounds right across several genres

Does the trick.

 Well, i'm no silly person, so I bought two. After my order was completed they went back to being very very expensive (someone goofed up somewhere). That being said, i'm not complaining, because these perfectly capture bass drum hits, bass guitar cabinets, and anything that you need to pickup 45-400 HZ better than running through a DI.

I play double bass in a trio, using a combination of pizzicato and arco playing. This microphone works very well, capturing the subtle sounds well (unlike a transducer). I would recommend it for an bass player that uses low-to-moderate volume levels (a microphone will not work well at high volumes due to feedback).
