The SIGMA fp L is the best camera for filmmaking that we've tested with a compact design. This premium interchangeable lens camera is one of the smallest full-frame camera bodies you can get, with a minimalist, weather-sealed design. It feels remarkably well-built with die-cast aluminum covering its front and back and rubber accents for grip. That said, its screen is fixed, and if you prefer to shoot with a viewfinder, you have to buy an EVF attachment from SIGMA at an additional cost.

Despite lacking in ergonomics, the camera has several extra features that make it an attractive option for filmmakers, including a 'Director's Viewfinder' mode as well as support for CinemaDNG RAW files and 12-bit 4:2:2 video output over HDMI. It can record in Blackmagic RAW and ProRes RAW when you connect an external SSD, which allows you to shoot in 12-bit at up to 30 fps in 4k and up to 100 fps in 1080p. The camera has several frame rate options to choose from depending on what recording format you use, and its overall video quality is good when shooting in more controlled lighting conditions.

That said, the camera lacks in-body image stabilization, meaning you have to rely on your lens' optical stabilization when shooting without a tripod. The camera does have digital image stabilization, though it only does a decent job of reducing camera shake and incurs a noticeable crop. Still, this is a good option if you're looking for a unique filmmaking camera with a compact, minimalist design and RAW video support.

I've invested nearly $10k AUD into the Sony ecosystem and it only took me one week with the Canon R5 to realise Canon is the ecosystem for me. Why?

Colours. The colours are absolutely AMAZING, particularly skin tones. Absolutely beautiful. 

Sony? Don't get me started. Sometimes it comes out good. Usually though, it's at least a hour of qualifiers and adjustments in Resolve in order to get something that matches my expectations.

I am still learning the UI (although it seems quite intuitive) and I'm not very happy with the 4K HQ overheating. Once the R5C comes out, I can't wait to switch to the Canon ecosystem.

I rented the R5 for a weekend. I'm selling my A7S3.

A flawless camera for people who really know what they want

The stabilization is effective, but does come with a 1.24x crop. On the other hand, if getting closer to the action is the goal, you can punch in with a 2.5x digital zoom without dropping below 4K, and to 5x at 1080p

The Sigma fp L pushes the limits of tech with a 60MP full-frame sensor and an extensible design concept, but its electronic shutter readout makes it unsuitable for handheld photography.

The resolution tops out at 4K. Instead of taking advantage of the extra pixels in the sensor to get 8K recording (something Canon includes in its 45MP EOS R5), Sigma opts to use them to offer an in-camera digital zoom, without dropping below 4K resolution, as well as digital stabilization.

The fp L is loaded with features for video. It records Raw video internally, 8-bit CinemaDNG to SDXC and up to 12-bit quality if you record to an SSD. Compressed video is also supported, good news if you're not ready to think about a Raw video workflow. The same color profiles available for stills are included for video&mdash;there's a low-contrast look that can handle a grade, but no true Log profile included

 The screen is fixed, which makes it hard to shoot from unconventional angles or monitor yourself while vlogging. On the upside, it delivers good overall image quality and decent video quality in both FHD and 4k, but its autofocus system is disappointing for both photo and video.
