Some testers also wished this pillow was a touch firmer when thinned down, but even so, it is still one of our favorite pillows. We recommend this pillow if you tend to be restless, as this one will roll with you rather than rolling off the bed and can be folded and tucked nicely if you want a firmer or thicker spot in the middle of the night.

Sleep Artisan Side Sleeper Pillow - The Best Pillow For Side Sleepers

<div class="md">Hi everyone. I know pillows aren&#39;t technically a BIFL item, but Reddit doesn&#39;t have a dedicated pillow shopping sub and you guys seemed to have the most pillow-related posts. Also I might have posted this before but I got a notification saying it was auto removed by a spam filter. I&#39;ll remove the original post if that&#39;s not the case.

So, without further ado, allow me to begin my multi-paragraph monologue of whining.

TL;DR version is that I&#39;m a side sleeper with a single-shoulder width of seven inches looking to solve my pillow woes. Ideally, I&#39;d prefer something cheap that I can buy again in a few years, but I understand that my needs are incredibly specific here, so anything up to $1,000 is welcome. Also I live in the U.S.A. Sidebar says that&#39;s pertinent information.

Long version:
I&#39;ve always struggled with hella tension in my neck and shoulders, and I&#39;m finally in a spot where I can invest in a good pillow. But finding a good one has been a real uphill battle, for several reasons.

The biggest obstacle has been finding a pillow thick enough to fill the space between my shoulder and head. As I mentioned in the TL;DR, the width of one of my shoulders, from the base of my neck to the end, is seven inches. Finding pillows that lofty has been a big challenge. Even when I do find ones that seem to be plump enough, they always seem to deflate into pancakes after only a few uses. I&#39;m really trying to avoid having to hunch up one of my shoulders to make my head reach the pillow, or having to put one of my arms under it. Both have caused me a great deal of pain and stiffness upon waking up.

The other big reason I&#39;ve been unable to find a good pillow is, well, I seem to be incredibly persnickety when it comes to head support. Originally I had a link here to an imgur album with picture of some stick figure drawings illustrating my pillow issues. But I think the link is why the automod flagged it as spam. So, instead, here&#39;s a wall of text explaining what was originally in the picture:

<li>If a pillow&#39;s too short, I wake up with a crick in my neck and some real intense shoulder pain from having to scrunch up one side of my body to meet the surface of the pillow.</li>
<li>If the pillow&#39;s too high, I lose circulation in my shoulders and/or also get a crick in my neck.</li>
<li>If a pillow&#39;s too hard, I have to rotate my head real weird to get any semblance of neck support and...say it with me...get a crick in my neck.</li>
<li>If a pillow&#39;s too soft, my head sinks in too much and I feel like I&#39;m suffocating</li>
<li>My ideal pillow keeps my head level and also puffs up into that small space under my jaw to support my neck, forming what I will henceforth be referring to as The Neck Support Lump of Supreme Comfort (patent pending)</li>
</ul>

My current pillow solution consists of three pillows stacked on top of each other in an incredibly specific order.

At the bottom I have an old memory foam pillow. Originally I thought that memory foam would be perfect for me, which is why I snagged it. But I think my head is really light or something, because I didn&#39;t sink into it much at all. And, as you saw from my descriptions of my illustrations, I&#39;m really trying to chase that nub of neck support. So right now it&#39;s kinda just a height booster I guess.

Second up is a special &quot;side sleeper pillow&quot; that I bought once. It has since deflated into a pancake, despite very dilligent fluffing. This one functions as the semi-firm support pillow, and also a bit of a height booster.

On top is a thin soft feather pillow, so that my head can sink in and get that good good neck support. Since there&#39;s a firmer pillow below it I can still get support once my head sinks through it. And since it&#39;s thin I don&#39;t have to worry about my head sinking too far in and suffocating me.

This setup has done an okay job for roughly 4-8 years, so it&#39;s definitely high time for a replacement.

Things I&#39;ve Already Tried:
- Memory foam seems to be a no-go for me. My head is too light I guess.

<ul>
<li>I tried a bamboo pillow once. It felt really really close to what I wanted. But it wasn&#39;t quite lofty enough, and I think I almost sunk in too much. To the point that my nose and half my mouth were squished up against the pillow and I had trouble breathing.</li>
</ul>

Things I&#39;d Prefer Not To Try:
- I haven&#39;t tried a buckwheat pillow, but I don&#39;t think that&#39;ll be a good solution for me. I need something soft enough to distribute the pressure where my face bones get smooshed up against the pillow. Also, as I mentioned, my head is light, so it&#39;s unlikely I&#39;l actually sink into it like intended. If you can do some really good convincing, though, I&#39;ll be willing to try it.

<ul>
<li>I&#39;d prefer not to buy a MyPillow. The owner&#39;s political views are...a bit concerning to me. If you can recommend a dupe, I&#39;d be willing to go with that.</li>
</ul>

I realize this is a pretty tall order here, but I&#39;d be very grateful for any advice you&#39;d be able to give me. Oh, and thanks for reading this far and being able to tolerate my extremely Goldilocks views on bed accessories.

In all seriousness, though, I&#39;m glad my weird post about pillows was able to help other people. And, of course, I also got some great advice. I&#39;ve added the Coop Home Goods pillow, the Purple Harmony, and a Pluto custom pillow to my christmas wishlist. If anyone is even vaguely interested, I can post a follow-up edit about what I ended up trying. Or a follow-up post. Dunno if that would be allowed.

EDIT 2: I ended up being gifted a SnugglePedic Memory Foam pillow. It seems to be similar to the Coop Home Goods pillow that some of you recommended, since it has memory foam shreds that you can add or remove to adjust the firmness. So far I&#39;m loving it! I still need a single booster pillow underneath for height, but otherwise I think it hits that sweet spot between softness and support. Leagues better than my previous &quot;stack of pancakes&quot;.

I can&#39;t speak to its BIFL-ness since I&#39;ve barely had it for one night. But here are some miscellaneous notes/observations on the product for all zero people who care:

<ul>
<li>Adjusting the amount of memory foam is way less messy than I assumed it would be. The foam bits clump together once you grab a fistful, so it&#39;s pretty easy to transfer it to a bag.</li>
<li>Once you&#39;ve got the amount you want in the pillowcase, you kinda have to shake it around and fluff it in order to get the filling to distribute evenly. This gets especially tricky if you&#39;re stuffing it with a lot of extra foam.</li>
<li>The little insert I got with the pillow claims you can contact the company and recieve extra filling for free. I don&#39;t know how long this offer stands after you purchase the pillow, though. If the offer doesn&#39;t expire, though, you could definitely extend the life of the pillow by just washing the cover and then replacing the filling every so often. Or, if you wanted to be sneaky about it and save some money, you could get a couple free bags of filling and just stuff a zippered pillowcase with it to make a new pillow. That&#39;s basically what this product is, when you get down to it. (Ship of Theseus who?)</li>
<li>There&#39;s a very slight &quot;new&quot; odor on the pillow, but it&#39;s only noticeable if you really bury your face in it. It&#39;s already started dissipating in the past few hours since I opened it, and if you put a pillowcase on the thing it&#39;s barely noticeable.</li>
<li>When you put more stuffing in, you&#39;re not so much adjusting the height of the pillow as much as you are just adjusting the firmness. I make this distinction purely because my first instinct was to put all the filling in at once to make it extra high, and while I did get my head to the right height I could definitely feel that familiar crick in my neck I get from pillows that are too hard. That&#39;s why I still have a pillow underneath my new one. So I can keep the pillow soft and have that good good neck support lump but not have to fold my shoulders in half in order to get my head on the pillow.</li>
</ul>

Please Please Please Help Me Solve My Very Long, Very Dramatic Struggle With Pillows

I'm trying to find a memory foam pillow that's dense/hard and also fairly thin (a supportive pillow where your head doesn't sink in that much). I went to the tempur pedic store to try some out, and the only one that fit the pillow was their contour pillow, but it was slightly too hard, and the shape is non standard (ergonomic neck pillow). All of the other pillows sunk way too much in or were too thick before they sunk in. Even the firmest and thinnest options. 

I am a side sleeper and used an old sleep innovations pillow for many years that was extremely dense and heavy. It got too soft and I switched to a replacement one in the past few months. Well, actually, I bought this replacement a few years ago when my old pillow was already getting ratty, but the replacement was worse (the company got taken over) so I put off retiring the old one to hold out longer. But finally the old pillow had gotten to a point where it was just too soft and started to hurt my neck in the morning, so I switched to the replacement recently. It doesn't have that memory foam feel of holding its shape, but it is reasonably dense. But, after breaking in after a few months, I find it is already too soft and sinks in too much again. 

Basically I'm looking for the pillows of decades ago when memory foam was a new thing and the pillows were super heavy and super hard, especially when it was winter. The tempur pedic sales people knew what I was talking about but said they only knew of newer types of pillows that were softer (except for that super dense contour neck pillow).

Does anyone make these sorts of pillows anymore? The tempur pedic ergonomic neck pillow sort of fit the bill, and with breaking it in would probably be perfect, but the shape doesn't work at all. I haven't really considered other materials, but I think memory foam is regarded as the densest material? 

For now, I ordered the replacement pillow I bought a few years ago. I'm hoping that it hasn't gone more downhill in the meantime (questionable, as they already cut corners).  I guess if I don't find another pillow I might just order like 10 of these and change them every few months once they break in, they're only $20 now. A long term alternative would be to literally take 2 tempur pedic neck contour pillows and cut the weird contour bits off and then stack them on top of each other to make one actually dense pillow. But, I'm really hoping there is someone that makes an actually dense pillow so I don't have to do this weird frankenpillow.

Hi guys, wanted to update this post. I went to Tempur Pedic and tried some of their pillows out, I bought 2 of them during a BOGO event: 1. I&#39;ve been using the first pillow for the past couple months, it&#39;s been surprisingly good (neck pain gone away). It&#39;s pretty dense, at least it&#39;s basically the densest of the non-neck pillows that tempur pedic offers. So maybe give that one a shot. I would highly recommend going to a Tempur Pedic store and trying them out. Especially since the salespeople said the website doesn&#39;t have some of the pillows that are in the store and vice versa and the naming conventions are pretty confusingly similar. Factor in the fact that the pillow will lose its loft a bit and break in. I was torn between that one and a different model that was like mid loft, and now the pillow has settled in a bit it seems the correct height.

I haven&#39;t really tried the neck pillow, I just bought it because of the BOGO. It was my hail mary option in case the other one didn&#39;t work, since I know the neck pillow is extremely dense, but would take some time getting used to since you&#39;re sort of locked into the sleeping position and it doesn&#39;t seem like you can move your head on the pillow that much.

Another option is the Avocado pillow (<a href="https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/collections/pillows">https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/collections/pillows</a>). It is Latex pillow instead of memory foam. I live reasonably close to their factory showroom, so I went there to try out the pillows. Latex is like dense jello and springs back more than memory foam. I didn&#39;t end up buying one, but the plush pillow seemed like the densest and thickest pillow. I think the molded latex pillow was also firm, but not as thick, if you&#39;re a smaller person. There&#39;s a sale right now, and I remember them saying there&#39;s a return policy so maybe you could try those out also.

  This could be it if I can get more latex filling from the company.  Also don't get the pillow case because for me it made the pillow more rough feeling and the softness wasn't the same so I am returning the pillow case. Just make sure to wash and clean your face before bed so you can keep the pillow clean! Since there really isn't a way to wash it properly.  I wish they made the pillow case out of the same cotton material as the pillow!! Then it would be perfect!!

 It's an excellent pillow. Being abele to adjust the fill/height of the pillow is what makes this a very practical pillow. However, I don't understand why it couldn't come in a normal size?
