 DVD content looks as good as DVD content can look on a TV like this and you can upscale it to 4K as well but I wouldn't recommend it. Disc loading times are also pretty good. From hitting the close button on the disc tray to seeing a menu was approximately 30 to 35 seconds while the Netflix menu was up approximately 7 seconds from the time I hit the button. I didn't give this category a total 5 because the upscaler probably could be a little bit better but honestly I'm not really trying to upscale DVD content to 4K so that's why I gave it a 4

 It's a 4k UHD Blu-ray player from Sony. And basically what that means is it allows you to play these bad boys, 4k UHD disc, shiny disc. That's right, they actually still sell disc that you can put in a player and play them and watch them on your television. The main highlights of this particular player are the 4k resolution and HDR format support

 Along the rear you have about five connections. You have your power connection, an ethernet adapter, two HDMI ports, and a digital audio out port. I like the fact that Sony gives us two HDMI ports. The first is for audio and video while the second is for AV receivers that don't support 4k

My home theater setup

 Read on for my evaluation:  -- TV DOES EVERYTHING EXCEPT PLAY DISCS. The Sony TV x900F does everything the Blue-ray player does expect play discs. Really that would be the only reason to fork out $175 for the player if you already have a smart 4K UHD TV. -- NOT THE BEST PICTURE: I'm inputting the X700 via a certified 4K HDMI cable into a Sony 65" X900 or also a 4K UHD TV

 Now output one is for audio and video, output two is for audio only, and this is in case you have an older audio receiver that can't pass through 4K, you can just plug it to audio directly. And it does have a digital output, which is coaxial digital, but I would like to have seen it with a fiber optic as well. When connecting up any 4K source, you need to upgrade your video cable. This one is a HDMI 2

 Now with this in place, this should give us the best picture quality you can get out of this Blu-ray disc automatically. And if you look at the screen, it's trying to produce 4K 60 frames per second automatically. But let's zoom into the screen and look at the picture quality. So if you look at the picture quality here, you can see everything is kind of blurry

 Now the remote control is laid out very easy, you have some color coding for quick menu settings as well as your top, back, all your controls right here for your Blu-ray player. If you ever get lost you have a home button, and cool thing is it has this little groove on the back so that'll hold your finger right there so you make sure you have a good control on it. You also can control your TV volume up and down but you need to program it, and I will tell you that it doesn't support all the TV set nor is it programmable. So if you really need it, these are the different ones that it can control

 With the exact same settings to automatic on a Blu-ray player, now I'm going to put in this 4K Ultra HD disc, and then we're going to zoom into the screen and see if you lose any pixels or see any difference in the clarity. All right, let's go ahead and play on this demo material. And you can see it's picking up 4K, but you also can see Dolby Vision HDR, so this is going to give us a much richer color. Now this is a scene that you would be watching in a movie, but let's zoom into it and see what kind of pixels we can see in comparison to the previous video footage

I just bought a [Sony A8H](https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/televisions/a8-series) OLED TV and I now need to upgrade my bluray player to a 4k version (my current player is broken too).

I was going to get a [Sony player](https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/blu-ray-dvd-players/t/blu-ray-disc-players) and the prices range from £200 to £350. I can see the more expensive ones have Dolby Vision support. My TV mentions Dolby Vision anyway, does the player need it too I guess?

Could anyone tell me if I need the most expensive 4k player, or if for a general viewer the cheapest 4k player is basically all I need to enjoy my new TV? Do I need Dolby Vision? How do I know what disks use what?

Bought an A8H OLED TV, do I need a 4k bluray player that has Dolby Vision?

11b/g/n only. There is no 5ghz 802.11ac support. This means that streaming will be on the band most likely to suffer interference from microwave ovens and competition for channels

 Leaving out 802.11ac is just plain stupid. What is wrong with you Sony?  So, in short, a fine performing player designed by people who seem indifferent to road blocks they put in the way of a user getting the most out of the player in the easiest way. No auto-detect for Dolby Vision and no 802

 Video performance is excellent, and the interface is more or less identical to what has become standard in all current Sony players. HD and UHD streaming image quality on services like VUDU is noticeably improved from the UBP-X800.  The UBP-X700 does however have two glaring shortcomings that will cause this buyer to upgrade o another player as soon as an affordable alternative becomes available.  These are:  1

No auto-detect for Dolby Vision and no 802.11ac are dumb choices from Sony

 So in this review I want to show off the player itself, go through some of the interface menu and some of the options that you should definitely be aware of when you buy this player in order to get the most out of it and then talk about my initial thoughts on the quality, the pricing of it and how it stacks up to some of its more expensive competitors. So to lead off I want to talk about the quality of this player and the pricing and how it stacks up to other players that I've tried. The reason I went with this player, this Sony player, is because I try to keep things consistent so I have a Sony 4K TV, I wanted to go with the Sony 4K player, I've had luck with consistency between players and TVs, they communicate with each other a little bit better in my eyes. So it was just, you know, that was the biggest reason for going for this one over say an LG or Panasonic or even a higher end like an Oppo player, some of which are really hard to find right now

 So it's a pretty good price for a 4K player, under $200 and it does come with everything you'd want from 4K. It does have Dolby Vision, it supports HDR10, full 4K resolution, it handles that 24 frames per second movie display that Sony TVs and players can handle which is really good for watching physical media at home, 24 frames per second is the typical movie frame rate so it has a lot of nice things built into it. You're not missing out on anything, it passes through Atmos, it passes through Dolby Vision. The only thing it is missing is HDR10+, but my TV is Dolby Vision, not HDR10+, so I had no need for that

 So if you don't need to spend the money, don't spend the money. And I certainly don't think you need to when there's players like this for $180. So thank you for watching. SONY UBP-X700 4K ULTRAHD BLU-RAY PLAYER REVIEW & SETUP | DOLBY VISION & GREAT VALUE!

I bought this to pair with my LG OLED TV. I was on the fence about whether or not to buy into the 4K blu-ray ecosystem as I feel the industry has really screwed that up.  I was looking for some middle ground here, particularly on price. The Sony X700 is the cheapest, quality player that supported every format my TV was capable of displaying

  My biggest bugaboo with this player and why I won't give it 5 stars though it meets my needs at a good price is the lack of auto detect for Dolby Vision and the lack of a button to toggle on/off. You can't even do it from the submenu. You have to exit the movie and turn it on or off from there. So annoying to the point that I've separated my alphabetized movie collection by dolby vision or non-dolby vision

  I was looking for some middle ground here, particularly on price. The Sony X700 is the cheapest, quality player that supported every format my TV was capable of displaying. It's considerably cheaper at the time of purchase than the Panasonic and LG models that I might have otherwise purchased.  I don't care about the streaming apps

Meets most of my needs

 Most of these settings are exactly the same as the prior models, so I'll just let the video run through. And if need be, just pause it if you need to see something. Okay, so now that that's done, let's test out a 4K disc. I'm going to use my go-to movie Sully

 Let's try out Cosmos Laundromat in HDR. And YouTube does indeed stream in 4K with HDR. The image looks excellent as well, but there is a ton of banding there. So just a couple of things to note, there is currently no Dolby Vision support out of the box, but there is another Sony Promise firmware update coming maybe spring summertime

 So good job Sony. Now let's try Netflix. I'm going to use Daredevil, and HDR is supposed to be supported. And as you can see here, it is in 4K, and HDR is active
