First off if you are not use to carrying a knife every day don't get an expensive knife right of the bat if you lose it you feel like crap and you don't have a backup. Get a couple of good inexpensive ones first like, Spyderco Centofante 3, Kershaw Chill, or Kershaw Skyline All of which I have carried for over 5 years. After a while go for the Benchmade 940, Microtech, or  Zero Tolerance.

First time knife buyer, what should I get?

 VG-10 is a Japanese steel and the majority of the cost here is in the blade steel. Some of my nitpicks are the overall finish on the knife, mainly the handle. There is leftover plastic along the seam, like it wasn't cleaned up very well. The same goes for the palladium Spyder, there is flash around it and it sits slightly off kilter

 The grooves in the handle are mainly for show, I doubt they provide any traction at all.  The blade is wonderful VG-10. My first knife with this particular steel and I'm a fan already. Very sharp and has held it's edge well

Not great, not bad

  The blade steel is good. Came pretty sharp. Had a nice comfortable weight to it. But it's pin construction, as stated in the description

 Then the silver palladium accent on the handle began to tarnish. Which surprised me as I didn't particularly use this knife recklessly or let it sit dirty.  I'm less than fond of the handle material as it's not particularly grippy, and the design is only on one side of it. And its locking mechanism is a little difficult to access

 It'll be a bit cheaper and overall better quality and more usefulness.  Not as flashy, but in my opinion a better blade.

 The pivot is WAY too tight and can't be adjusted, the blade is so uncentered that it nicks and rubs the plastic handle when it closes (again, can't be adjusted), the thumb hole is tiny so my thumb can't get a good bite on it, and the edge grind was horrifyingly uneven and was actually ROLLED 3/4 the lengh of the blade. I've got more sharpening equipment than I know what to do with so the edge could have been an easy fix, but I still can't forgive that lack of quality control, particularly since the rest of the knife is also completely unsatisfactory.

I like the looks of the knife, but the handle is too slick, the gap when the knife is closed is so sharp that when drawing the knife from a pocket it will damage your clothes.
