 It stays upright easily until the funnel top is installed and holds it in place.  FOLLOW-UP 6-11-13: Having used the gauge for just over a month now I want to comment on it. As others have said it is extremely accurate and very easy to read. That is unless it fogs up which in the Central Florida humidity it does virtually every morning

I just received my Stratus rain gauge so I can't vouch for it's accuracy yet. However it is a well made and heavy duty item. Sadly from what I read here it is not the highest quality polycarbonate as there are complaints of yellowing and weather checking. I slightly down-rated this gauge due to the lid not locking on, a potential problem in high wind as others have said

 I find this strange for a measuring instrument that says on the side: "The Professional Rain Gauge". Why was the slit not made deeper so that the surface of the water would be exactly 1" and not about 1.02"? Of course it wouldn't be difficult to make the slit a bit deeper with a file but why isn't a $42 piece of plastic manufactured accurately?  The total capacity of the gauge is 11" of rain. It would definitely not be convenient to measure multiple inches of rain by carefully filling the measuring tube multiple times

Works well up to 1" of rain but...

  The rain gauge measures to 0.010" by having an inner tube. The funnel diameter is roughly 3"ID, and the inner tube roughly 1"ID, with the exact ration being 10:1. Thus, when the inner tube has 1" of water, that becomes 0

This is a polycarbonate rain gauge, made in the USA. I couldn't find another with moderate effort. The advantage of polycarbonate is that it can survive a winter's freezing with water in it. Acrylic cannot

  It appears that this rain gauge is intended for professional use, though I find it great for home use in the winter. Since polycarbonate tends to yellow and weaken in sunlight, I prefer to use an acrylic rain gauge in the warmer weather. I do note that the manufacture indicates that the gauge is UV stabilize, which would substantially increase its longevity in sunlight.  Bottom line, I'm glad to have it, and can recommend it to folks who want high accuracy, or who are committed to USA manufacturing

I purchased a rain gauge to give my son at his birthday. The model I bought was the same as my rain gauge which I have owned for years and enjoy keeping records of amount rainfall has been to keep on top of growing a garden and flowers. The large 11 inch rain gauge allows me to confidently record even large amounts of rainfall and smaller rain falls as little as 1/100th of an inch. My son is very pleased to own his gauge and no longer have to guess on rainfall amounts received

Great, easy to read rain gauge that has very good precision. This rain gauge measures precipitation to the hundredth of an inch! It very easy to read and is simple to empty. I've only used it in the warm weather (and don't plan to use it during the winter), but so far it has worked perfectly. The plastic feels durable and of good quality

Quality Rain Gauge

If you take recording precipitation seriously then this is the most accurate rain guage you will find. It cost a little more than a rain guage from the big box store but you get what you pay for. This is the same (official) guage I used to use to record precipition at events like car races and concerts for insurance purposes. This guage will also allow you to determine the amount of precipitation in snow
