 And let me show you here this beater too. Like I said while I was holding the pedal in my hand, this beater is adjustable. Right now it's flush on the kick drum head. But if I needed to just a little tilt back

 This is a nice patented feature that only comes on Tama pedals and what that does is it helps get the pedal board back to its original position. You don't have to over tighten the spring on the side of the housing here to get your pedal to come back after you make the stroke. The Cobra coil helps push it back up to the right starting position every time and they make everything adjustable on this pedal. Even the Cobra coil is adjustable with this tension screw right here

 Stick it right there, you just loosen it up and you can put the beater angle wherever you like. There's actually lines on the Speedo ring right here. You can actually adjust it little by little if you want to and get it just specific and exactly where you want in two seconds. Get it kind of tight on the kick drum hoop and then you have, you can really tighten it down with the wing nut here

 The Cobra coil helps push it back up to the right starting position every time and they make everything adjustable on this pedal. Even the Cobra coil is adjustable with this tension screw right here. It goes back and forth and you can get it to the exact position really right out of the box. It feels good but if you want to adjust it, they made it so you can for sure

I have a Tama HP30. It does the job, but it’s a no-frills pedal and does not have a steel base plate. 

My understanding is that a heavier pedal with a nice baseplate will allow for more control and will last longer overall.

I have two questions for the group:

1) Would it be worthwhile to upgrade from this cheaper Tama HP30 to a higher quality pedal?

What is the best single bass drum pedal for smoothness, speed and feel?

<div class="md"><p>I’ve played guitar and bass for over 30 years  and have made a living playing and selling stringed instruments. I’ve only been playing drums seriously for about 6 months. </p>

<p>My question is one of mechanical limitations. </p>

<p>If I was selling a budding guitarist a new instrument I would recommend that they get the best instrument that they can afford, because (and of course there are always exceptions) it’s very frustrating to try to perfect technique on an instrument that “fights you” with high action, poor intonation or cheap electronics. </p>

<p>Is this similar for bass (kick) drum pedals? Is there a massive difference in a no-name pedal from eBay as opposed to an expensive option from a major company. </p>

<p>I ask because, for now I am using a combination of an Alesis kick pedal and a cheap mapex pedal. I actually prefer the feel of the “free” pedal that came with my electronic kit much more than the mapex. </p>

<p>My foot technique sucks. I know buying a high end pedal won’t fix that, but is there a point where I am working harder than I have to because of the limitations of my gear?</p>
