The M80 is a microphone equally suitable for voice, instruments or drums on both stage and in the studio. Due to its low mass capsule and super thin (yet surprisingly rugged) capsule membrane the M80 presents a wider range of emotion from a live vocal with an intimacy that has been traditionally reserved for studio quality condenser microphones. The head and capsule assembly has been designed to reduce proximity effect to which nets added low end clarity for vocals, while still providing "strength" and "authority" and an "open," "airy" character without adding danger of upper midrange feedback or "honk." The M80 also features an American made custom wound impedance matching transformer which is where the magic really takes place.

 It's available in numerous colors and some different head grill designs as well. So the idea with the M80 is to have a dynamic stage mic, which has all the rugged durability that you expect from a stage mic, but has a sound more reminiscent of a condenser mic. The other thing that makes it unique compared to some dynamic mics is a very tight cardioid pattern

 If you've ever wondered what it would sound like if I was writing a high school angsty pop punk song, this is it. Alright well this is what I think people would call a condenser-like stage dynamic microphone. But first up in terms of pros, this microphone does have an absolutely amazing build quality, and I really like the flattened edges on the side of the mic to keep it from rolling away, and additionally it has a very clear and clean sound for a dynamic microphone. And then in terms of cons, the things that really stuck out to me on this microphone were the plosive rejection, it just didn't do a very good job there, and if you're a little bit farther off of the microphone and not engaging that proximity effect, it gets very very top heavy

 We get the microphone, a microphone mount, but no 5 eighths to 3 eighths inch adapter, probably because this microphone is intended for live use, and the majority of microphone stands used on stage have 5 eighths inch threading. You'll get some documentation, and a damn sticker! Then as far as the build quality, this microphone feels absolutely amazing, like it was designed to take the abuse that's going to come with being a stage microphone. It has an all metal body which feels nice in the hand, a very sturdy metal mesh grill which doesn't have any give to it, it has a nice weight coming in at 387 grams, and something that I ignored on my M81 review, it has these flattened areas on the handle to keep it from rolling away from you when you place it down on a flat surface. And other than that, there is nothing on this microphone, it's a bare bone stage microphone that feels really well put together

 And to wrap it all up, would I recommend this microphone, yes and no. For spoken word, I don't think I would recommend this because I think that application requires a little bit more body and warmth in the low end, which was really apparent when we listened to the SM58, it had all of that body and warmth, but it lacked a little bit of detail and clarity that the M80 has. So if I had to pick between these two tones for spoken word I would 100% go with the SM58. But on the other hand, if you're looking for a microphone for live singing environments, I absolutely recommend this microphone

This gives you what people would call a condenser like sound with all that clarity and detail that you get from a condenser microphone, but it has the durability of a dynamic microphone, which is what makes this mic so appealing for live use. You're getting that condenser sound, but you're getting the durability of an SM58

Today I review the Telefunken M80, a dynamic microphone that seems to be growing in popularity. This microphone has a large presence, treble and air boost which gives it a “condenser” like sound, meaning it has a LOT of detail and clarity. Due to this large boost it does seem to lack a bit in the low end, but it maintains a very smooth sound.
