Best Travel Backpacks of 2022 - GearLab

I know I'm probably just a sucker for their marketing but I'm looking around for a backpack to take with me on a year long trip around the world, and I keep coming back to the Outbreaker. I currently have a Patagonia black hole duffel bag that is 60 L and that I've had no problem getting on planes as carry on, time and time again. I see everyone saying that 45 L is MASSIVE, but to me, dropping to a 35 L bag just sounds drastic given my experience filling a 60 L bag for \~2.5 week trips. I know I can definitely pack more efficiently, do laundry more often, etc. but am I crazy for being tempted by the 45 L? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Or alternatives to Tortuga if you think it's really not the move.

Also, not sure if it's relevant, but I'm a 6' 2" guy.

Why the Tortuga hate?

 Again, it’s important to note the lack of padding, but depending on the size of your tablet, you can also just about fit a case in this compartment. For extra security, there’s a Velcro strap that comes over these compartments to hold your items inside—but if you’re using cases for these items, it will not reach across. 

 As this pack is not compressible like the Osprey Ultralight Stuff Sack, so there’s enough padding on here to give this pack a comfortable carry even when it’s at full capacity. Plus, the padding is thick enough to provide some ventilation and breathability—which is always welcomed.

On the shoulder straps, Tortuga included an adjustable sternum strap, which you can easily move up or down to find the right fit for you. There’s some elastic on the sternum strap as well, which flexes when you’re moving, adding to the comfort. Plus, there’s also an elasticated band to keep the straps tidy and a small strap across the shoulder straps to hideaway the sternum strap if you want it out of the way. And you know we love a #danglefreeexperience

 So without a case, this pocket will hold a 15” laptop and with a case, a 13” laptop should fit just fine. 

Tortuga Outbreaker Daypack Review | Pack Hacker

I'm getting a Minaael Carry-on 3.0 but I don't really like the Daily 3.0 which fits inside. Can anyone recommend a similar lie-flat pack that maybe fits a 13" laptop and water bottle but very little else? Trying to keep things as slim and light as possible. I would use this pack on trips where obviously I'm going from place to place with the Carry-on but then I want to do urban exploration for example and don't want to lug the big pack everywhere. Thanks!

Recs for a very lightweight lie-flat backpack? (to go inside Minaal Carry-on)

[URL REMOVED] EDC is an Arc’teryx Waistpack, but it fits inside my bag on the plane.  I work from home, and don’t use a laptop, so my daily carry needs are minimal.

I decided to go with the Tortuga Outbreaker Daypack for my one-bag/personal item.  Lightweight, minimalist, essentially waterproof and simple.

The 26+6 Osprey did not overall have good reviews across Osprey and Reddit either.

**I am looking for reviews/thoughts on the following bags in order of my preference**:

* ULA Dragonfly (Main compartment is 22L, but many reviews say it holds more than listed)
* REI Ruckpack 28L (The lightest and largest I could find, but the way it opens is eh)
* Wayfinder 30L (Out of stock, with some available on craigslist, has good capacity to size)
* The rest in the top half of the spreadsheet 2lb and under, but the top three are my preference for cost
* Anything that fits the general above specs without being $300+, budget is $200 and below

The bags I've rejected and am rejecting:

* Generally anything over 2lb, I want the versatility of using the travel pack/bag as a daypack and EDC so 3-4+ lb 2000D Nuke-proof monsters can stay away
* Anything w/ excess organization; I'd rather buy a separate pouch where I dictate what level of organization for pens/pencils I want than have the bag do it for me
* Generally anything over 1-1.5" over the 18x14x8 personal item size in any direction.  I understand softer and under-packed bags can generally squish in but I don't want to fly too close to the sun.

Things I've noted/learned:

* Using an empty Amazon box that comes out to 12L exactly, I've learned that minus my electronics and accessories my clothing and toiletries come out to 12L exactly.  15-18L super tightly packed might be able to fit [all of my belongings from my packing list](https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/qeh00r/from_threebags_to_onebag_first_time_onebag/).
* I value light-weight, durability (for the weight), laptop compartments, long-term carry comfort and reasonable cost the most.

Is it worth just buying 3-4 of my top options that have a return policy, trying them all on with loads and then returning the ones that don't make the cut?

And are load lifters that useful?  The ULA Dragonfly can be customized w/ them for a price

 You know here it has really nice water resistant zipper, so it really feels like it's gon na help keep the main area protected against the rain. It has a really good capacity, as I mentioned earlier in the video. The bag itself is a 21 liter capacity. So there's plenty of space here to pack

 So Menaul has the carry-on 2.0 and the daily bag, and the two bags were kind of designed together so that you could put the daily bag inside the carry-on, and you know, as we saw in the videos we looked at for those bags, it works pretty. Well. The bag, the daily bag fits inside really nicely, and one thing I got to say about the Menaul daily is that the laptop compartment is fantastic

 I really like the system that it has here it's very easy to open and close, so the the clip itself is very short, so you can't really use this to unlock something while you're still wearing the bag, so you do have to unclip your keys or whatever You know accessories or tools you have on here, but it is nice that it just has that extra bit of organization to keep this item seperated or just make it very easy to grab whatever you have clipped onto here. So, moving on to this main compartment, the bag itself is a top loader. You know here it has really nice water resistant zipper, so it really feels like it's gon na help keep the main area protected against the rain.  Next, up the bag actually has a tablet and laptop seat. So you know here it has this kind of velcro loop attachment to help keep the laptop and tablet in place as you're walking around the city or, if you know the bag happens to flip over, they won't slip out of the pocket. While you have this attached and so first up with the tablet compartment, you know neither of these compartments is very padded. They don't have like a felt lining or anything like that to help prevent against the micro scratching and the compartment themselves is pretty

Best Packable Daypacks: Tortuga Outbreaker Daypack Review

Hey y'all! I've been on the fence about buying a small, packable day bag for overnight backpacking trips. There's a few 3-4 day trips I'd like to take next year and I want to have a smaller bag to use for any spurs off of the main trail. If I have the chance, I love to drop the heavy pack for a while and just carry some of the necessities like water, a few snacks, and a first aid kit. I'm looking for something that will satisfy these wants:  
\- carry the weight of those things well and be comfortable (I hate those drawstring bags with a passion).  
\- pack down as small as possible!  
\- traditional backpack style or a lumbar pack would work!

Best packable bag for day use while backpacking?

Does anyone use a Tortuga Outbreaker Daypack as a work laptop backpack? Do you recommend it?

* The liter-independent-ish outer pocket and the tablet-pocket-turned-drop-pocket internal pocket affords juuuust enough organization for me. Mini medkit, bars and powerbank on the outside, and a small pouch for small things like earbuds, lip balm and spork on the inside.

* The harness and backpack straps are brilliant. The padding on the back allows for plenty of air to pass through while supporting the lower back and base of neck. The straps are plush and breathable thanks to the perforations found throughout. Whether hiking or urban exploring, the back harness was exceptional
