It proved to be reasonably durable, surviving a five-foot drop test on both carpet and concrete. Its read and write times are sufficient for data backup and storage, though not the fastest. If you're in the market for something simple and affordable, this is a great choice.
While the timed speed tests reflect speeds in "optimized conditions," we saw this drive transfer data at a rate of 66 MB/s during our drag and drop tests, with significantly slower times read when moving larger files. For example, when dropping a 2GB file, it read at a rate of 90MB/s, while a 100GB file offered a speed of only 30MB/s. These speeds are about average for this price point. If the drive fails, there are no data recovery services or any included security features. Still, if low cost and simplicity are what you seek, this is the one to pick.

  So far, so good.  I also use a WD external drive and a thumb drive.   Losing my photos would be heartbreaking.  It arrived on time, no problems encountered downloading

 But for IT, Video Editors, Gamers, and Developers, look more towards a SSD External. Buy a SSD and an enclosure, faster and around the same price.

I resorted to this Toshiba external HDD because after purchasing five 5 TB Seagate One Touch Portable hard drives (which are currently on sale at Costco), I had to return *four* of them due to either read errors or hard-to-read blocks which caused the read/write speed to tank! All four of the aforementioned HDDs also exhibited the dreaded "click of death" -- which automatically give me a panic attack.  Anywho, this Toshiba HDD performed as expected! You can see the result of HDDScan that shows no sharp dip in transfer speed

 3) For extra storage see #1 above or even go for a 4TB depending on how much you want to store and what the value is.

 Sometimes they need a 3rd one just for extra storage. i've NEVER had a Toshiba external portable drive fail and I've used them a lot. Here's what I recommend you get: 1) For Time Machine buy at least double your internal drive -- so if 1TB internal then buy 2 TB. If you have 512 I'd still get a 2 TB because it's not much more money and allows more backups before you have to copy over old data
