After seeing these pictures, it might not come as a great surprise that I like shoes and boots that are a little different. Do these shoes even qualify as *shoes* and not boots, by the way? Either way, they're just the right amount of funky to go with how I dress, and that's the important part, in the end.

I ordered these directly from White's during the father's day sale. "Thankfully" they were out of my size in the stock model with single row outsole stitching and antique edge dressing, so as I had to MTO them either way and came up with this:

* Last: C461 Sprung-toe
* Upper leather: Brown dress
* Midsole: single
* Outsole: Vibram 430 half-sole
* Heel height: standard
* Heel cap: Vibram 430
* Toe structure: single celastic
* Sole trim: wide (double row sole stitching)
* Lining: unlined
* Size: 8D

Let me start by saying that these are absolute monsters. That heel stack is just... I have no words. Despite that, they feel relatively light weight, even in hand and on foot. The leather shank and single midsole helps reduce weight. I was actually a bit surprised the midsole was a proper single one this time, as you usually get a double midsole where the second one is thinner on White's boots with a rubber half sole. I guess for the shoes they actually use a single midsole. Interesting tidbit.

I also currently own a pair of [White's Semi-Dress in Brown Dress with an unstructured toe,](https://imgur.com/a/3d5mzMV) for your viewing pleasure.

Ï've had my share of bad luck with White's in the past. My first pair of Semi-Dress in Brown Dress [turned two different shades of brown after I started wearing them.](https://i.imgur.com/98jJCxl.jpg) And my brown shell cordovan MP boots suffered from [shell tearing.](https://imgur.com/a/8WExKMU) On the replacement pair of Semi-Dress, there are some issues with [puckering](https://imgur.com/a/32UGVXM) around the toe on one boot, for which I got a nice 25% discount. In other words, in both cases White's went above and beyond to make things right, and the issues were resolved.

In contrast to that, this pair of shoes is flawless. In relative terms, though: Not flawless as in fine museum calf actual oxford shoe, but flawless for heritage "work" boots. I wouldn't recommend any of the PNW makers to anyone looking for every stitch to be perfectly even, but getting into that discussion feels like beating a dead horse at this point, so let's leave it at that.

I may actually remove one layer from the sole stack at some point. I'm usually 5'7" on a good day, and I'm scraping 5'9 in these shoes. It comes with a bit of a feeling of constantly leaning forward, but I'm not sure if it's just something that takes getting used to. If I can't get used to it, I'll just use my magic bootmaking powers to reduce the heel height. The Vibram 430 heel cap is also thicker than the standard Quabaug heel cap on White's that have a different half-sole. Otherwise, they fit very well on my low instep, low volume Brannock 8.5C feet. At the moment there's a bit of heel slip, but that is already getting better after a wearing them for a few hours yesterday.

Anyway, I love these shoes and they fill and a necessary gap in my footwear rotation and they're really well-made. That's my first impression.
