 You're going to get a power cable for your region. This is an IEC. You are going to get the router itself, and in the box you are going to get a couple of wall plugs and a couple of screws there, because it has a wall mounting bracket in the back of it, which I'll show you in a minute. * Comcast 1 Gigabit Internet
* Typically about 10-12 active Wifi devices and 2 wired with about 30 devices total on the network.
* 4 Gaming PCs, 2 tvs, 4 game consoles, 5 phones, and a lot of little IoT type devices.

I just switched to 1 gigabit internet this morning and I am looking to upgrade my router to make sure all of my devices are getting good and consistent speed over Wifi. I have a lot of active devices at any given moment because I have a large family of gamers with multiple gaming PCs and I know it is probably pushing my router to the max during my prime time usage. Any recommendations? My spending cap is probably around $450-480.

Good performance; unintuitive UI

I "tried" a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 (meaning I bought it and returned it) TWICE, and I prefer *BSD-based routers (meaning pfSense, OPNsense, or just raw FreeBSD). Some part of it was IPv6 DNS/RA issues. Another part was the fact that I just love FreeBSD *too much* and *have* to run it on all my personal systems.

I'm a network engineer who owns and operates hundreds of Ubiquiti products across five states. I have almost every model of their EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch products along with a dozen wireless access points and Unifi switches and controllers sitting here next to me right now.  


I'm tired of the shoddy software, the lack of support, and the toxicity and abuse from this company.  


Where do I even start?  


Ubiquiti is big on marketing, hype, and social media, but sad on support, updates, fixes, and improvements.   


Marketing of Ubiquiti products is often intentionally vague, and it can be difficult to figure out exactly what features are supported and what is being improperly implied. There's a huge number of undocumented hardware and software limitations, such as the ERX having a maximum routing throughput of 500Mbps, the ER12 being limited to 700Mbps in certain bridging and VLAN configurations, the ERPOE5's ports 3-5 performance issues because of it's switch, the ERPOE5 not having a VLAN aware switch, some devices are constantly running out of storage space (ERX), the ER-Lite's failing USB drives, and on and on and on and on and on. Not only that, hardware acceleration is DISABLED by default on some models which tanks performance. There's no option in the GUI as of this writing to tell you otherwise. Some models take ages to reboot compared to even low end cisco gear (L3 switches) from ages past.  


Ubiquiti PoE usually isn't 802.3 standard. Some products are 802.3af/at/bt, some are passive 24V, some are passive 48V, some are passive 12V. Which product supports what? Who knows. Their marketing docs won't tell you. The community has raged about this many times so they finally made a FAQ article about it, but it's out of date and hasn't been updated in years, so some products are missing. Countless numbers of devices have been destroyed by plugging the wrong wireless access point into the wrong switch or power injector.  


There are significant disparities between what can be configured through the command line and what can be configured through the Web GUI. For example, OpenVPN has no GUI support at all, but is a highly used and advertised feature. Routing protocols are also very difficult or impossible to configure from the GUI. Troubleshooting from the GUI is almost impossible because there's no way to get many logs or output from status commands and counters.   


There are a significant number of configuration commands which are simply broken, resulting in errors such as "The specified configuration node is not valid" or "Set failed". Copy-pasting to/from the serial console is not safe or reliable. Sometimes random characters will get lost and the configuration will get corrupted. Holding down the space bar while doing a "show configuration commands" will often result in garbage output.  


Early EdgeSwitch models didn't even come with a serial console port. Bonkers.  


Security issues abound. For example, previous EdgeSwitch OS versions had hidden SNMP "public" writable community. It was over a year before they fixed it, and only when some news stories picked it up. Lots of unpatched security issues, privilege escalation exploits, and design problems.  


The official forum is toxic. Some time in 2018/2019 they replaced it and now it's even worse. Questions and comments are regularly censored and deleted. Most questions and bug reports go unanswered. The forum is where hope goes to die.  


Most models have no bootloader recovery method, and the "factory restore" procedure leaves custom files and confirmation on the device. A "factory reset" doesn't do a "factory reset".  


Committing configuration changes often take 20-30 seconds, even on high-end models. Using punctuation when naming Port or Address Groups can cause serious bugs. EdgeRouter DDNS doesn't actually work.  


48-port EdgeSwitch Lites failing en-mass. 48-port EdgeSwitches blowing power resistors and having other serious electrical problems. Unifi AC AP Lite being fried/burned while plugged into EdgeSwitches.  


The ER-Lite has a longstanding well-known unfixed problem with UDP packets being dropped/re-ordered/corrupted. Policy routing doesn't work, documentation abandoned. The vbash shell job control is broken. You can background a process with "&amp;", but "jobs", "fg", and other job control commands are missing. I've had issues where disabling VLAN interfaces did not actually disable the interface and it was still running. Doing a "clear ip ospf process" doesn't actually restart the process. If a new interface is created, such as an IPSec VTI or ethernet VLAN/vif interface, OSPF will not begin advertising the new network, even if it has a network declaration statement. You can't create a firewall rule with multiple sources and destination ports. There no 802.11ad/LACP support.  


The list of issues bugs and unfinished or non-existent features just goes on and on and on.  


Do yourself a favor and just buy something else.

Ubiquiti is just bad.

1 ???  April 1 observation, of ER-4, using firmware version 1.10.9: This router performs well, as an IPSec VPN endpoint. But it goes into never never land if the power goes out and back on

LOSES its marbles if I make tiny configuration changes to VPN, via GUI

I have 2 fiber internet in my home (from different ISPs) plus an LTE modem with 100GB data limit.

The reason I have 2 fiber connections is because if one goes down, I want the router to switch to the 2nd one. And if both of the fiber connections go down, switch to LTE modem which basically never goes down so it’s always guaranteed connection in worst case scenario.

I have Synology RT2600AC but it only supports 2 connections.

Also if the router can support WAN connections instead of LAN then I can directly hook up my fiber internets to it rather than connecting ethernet cables from my ISPs’ modems. In that case I also need the router to support VLAN ID which RT2600AC doesn’t have.

Is there such a router that I can hook up 2 WAN and 1 LAN connections and failover between them in a specific order?

Router advice with support for 3 failover connections

I've always liked the Ubiquiti stuff - at home, I use their AP's (and have for businesses in the past) and used to use a USG-3.  However, when connection speeds increased, the USG-3 was not cutting it - Smart Queues (fq_codel) was simply not able to keep up (I have a 350mbps symmetrical FTTH connection). I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading

 So, due to Ubiquiti's lack of a suitable offering in the range I'm willing to spend, I buy the ER-4.  Overall, this thing is great - I've never used an EdgeMAX product, but I setup UNMS and I'm happy with it. Overall, it just works - a great device. Setup was a breeze

 I sold it, and much to my dismay, continued to use my ISP-provided modem.  Fast-forward to today - I just moved (same ISP) but the router they provided me has a lot of bufferbloat - 90ms+ when downloading. So, due to Ubiquiti's lack of a suitable offering in the range I'm willing to spend, I buy the ER-4.  Overall, this thing is great - I've never used an EdgeMAX product, but I setup UNMS and I'm happy with it

 I can get it to work, but the limit on mine seems to be around ~300mbps of actual throughput - a sizable hit, and not one I'm willing to make.  The next thing I want to do is setup an OpenVPN connection, to use over a VLAN, to my lab network. This, while it works, simply is a pain in the ass - I personally don't know why I didn't test this more, but I hate having to manage VPN functionality that fully exists in the CLI. It's lazy

 Also if you are using any Ubiquiti hardware such as their access points or PoE switches, there is the added bonus of Ubiquiti's UNMS management software that allows ythe management of all of their devices via one centralized interface and management interface which also includes a mobile app.  Overall the one thing I am most impressed with is the units overall performance with hardware offloading enabled. My original pfSense box had a dual core 3 GHz processor with 8 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD and an Intel 815v quad port NIC and my average ping times were around 20 MS. With the EdgeRouter 4 my ping times have dropped to 9 MS

  I have ordered some new hardware in order to do a comparison with pfSense 2.5 down the road, but Ubiquiti has really out together an outstanding product with the EdgeRouter 4.  If you are considering the EdgeRouter Lite or X you should skip them and get an EdgeRouter 4 as it offers considerably more power with it's new processor and 1 GB or 2 times the RAM of the Lite and 4 times the RAM of the X series. Also keep in mind that this unit does not have a switch chip and therefore you will need to purchase a separate network switch if you have more than a couple devices and if you are planning on using both bridging and hardware offloading you should look at the Edgerouter 6 or 8 series

Compact with fast routing with hardware offloading.

 At least, I never recommend Any Unifi APs since I've tested it and did not like them when compared to Ruckus APs. Even used Ruckus APs are lightyears better than new Unifi APs.

I totally agree that Ubiquiti firmware Is completely subpar and I use to recommend Edgerouters and at this point stopped. Hope OPENWRT gets ported to Edgerouter 4 since I find it more reliable than EdgeOS 2.x.x which was a bloody mess
