Hey guys,

I'm going on a 2 week road trip soon and I want a camera for the dashboard to record some of the route. Since I have no experience in the subject I don't know what I should be looking for. I was looking at action cams but I found that dashcams are probably what I need. Can you tell me some brands/models that are good? 

Some info about the specs I'm looking:

* Night capturing isn't necessary
* Min. 1080p at 60Hz
* Good image stabilization (for some off-road driving)
* Battery at least 2h of capture at minimum 1080p/60Hz
* Possibility to use while charging (maybe all of them do that I wouldn't know)
* Budget around 200€

Camera advice for road trip

Great video quality, but has a few issues

 I would have to re-enter all the time & date again. Minor annoyance, but it's very irritating. The sound quality on this dash cam is good as the sound is very clear and easy to hear. The video quality is also good

 You can download your firmware updates from their website, which will reset everything you like about the camera. Capacitor doesn't last. We are use to batteries, that allow devices to sit for a while and record while you are in the store for a short visit, but the capacitor in the vantrue X4 UHD camera does not stay charged, just like most capacitors. The capacitor dies off almost instantly, which is not good if your car does not provide power to the cigarette lighter plug after it has had the key turned off

 I will be looking to offload this camera in the near future in favor of any other company that puts some thought behind their product. While the support person tries, there seems to be a language translator involved, and the topic is completely lost most of the time. After buying two cameras (one facing forward, one facing rearward) as well as two GPS mounts and the MicroSD cards to go with the systems, I can say that if the camera was in the $125-150 range, I would be much more comfortable suggesting that users buy it with the awareness of the design flaws. I will give vantrue a try again in the future

A long and honest review.. not really impressed.

 You only also only get 90 degree of rotation, So you can't turn to get a good side shot of something or flip around to record the interior of your vehicle. - This still a bad release design even after months of being familiar with the unit. Just needs the mount release reversed (facing the driver instead of the windshield) and all would be fine - 07/23  As with all cams dash reflection is horrible, have placed a t shirt on dash to combat it - This applies to all dash cams I've seen/tried. Even my cell phone will pick up dash reflection

 I have no use for GPS sensor or Parking mode so have no comments on those. But if you do have an issue OR any questions, this company will absolutely do it's best to help you. I will look into some of their other products after how well they treated me. They earned my repeat business because of it

Update 7/23/2020 IF (listen up Amazon) I could give the company itself a review, they would get 5+ stars. Their rep has worked tireless with me to solve the problems I've experienced with the X4UHD. My first unit turned out defective, they replaced it without question, then there was a mount problem and they went above and beyond to help out. I've upgraded my 2 star rating to 4 on the actual unit

  In conclusion, the X4 from Vantrue is a great dash cam, one of the best on the market, but now extremely overpriced.  I have attached video and images taken with the X4 under different lighting situations.

 The X4 now uses an 8 MP Sony IMX317 CMOS sensor over the X3’s OV4689, which is a slightly better CMOS sensor.  However, the major improvement is that the X4 allows you to capture video at 3840x2160P resolution at 30 fps! (The X3 maxed out at 2560x1440P) 1080p is considered High-Definition, 1440p is 2.5K, and 2160p is commonly called 4K resolution. So the X4 is a true 4K high-definition dash cam… one of the few on the market! Most Dash Cams are only 1080p

 So what has changed? Unfortunately, not all for the good.  So let's review the good stuff first. Both the X3 and X4 use the Ambarella A12 processor. This is an outstanding processor which does an awesome job of processing images

5K, and 2160p is commonly called 4K resolution. So the X4 is a true 4K high-definition dash cam… one of the few on the market! Most Dash Cams are only 1080p.  Furthermore, the X4 records 2560x1440p resolution at 60 frames per second! Again very few Dash Cams record at 60 fps.  Additionally, it should be noted that both the X3 and X4 have a 6 glass layer camera Lens with at F1

I believe this camera will be a great product, based on the lens and sensor made by SONY, the efforts they have been putting to fine tune the software

 Considering I didn't use my car for most of the last year due to Covid-19, this dashcam worked for me for about a year. It was a good one when it worked, but it just has a such short life.

 Eager to help to resolve your issue.  This product is a true pioneer on the market for 4K UHD dash camera. I can tell that the customer service team has been trying to collect feedback and take the feedback very seriously. Supporting team continues to improve the product and upgrade their software very frequently with new improvements

 I used a promo code available at the time that I purchased it, and I am grateful for that. I don't think it is worth the nearly $200 price. For that price, features like GPS and an adhesive mount should be included, not purchased separately. I am on the fence between 3 stars and 4

Suction mount is bad idea

 The time and date are totally off even days after I set the time and date. This does not impact the performance of the camera but on the video will be a wrong date and time which could, in my opinion, impact the video as evidence.  Update 04-07-2021: I am still using the Vantrue X4 dash cam in my car. I still have the problem with the date and time, but other then that this dash cam still produces great videos, the video quality is so much better compared to other dash cams

For the price the X4 is hard to beat. Image quality is good but not quite what I would expect from 4K. Maybe I'm spoiled by better sensors on GoPros and other small 4K cameras. It does show a good deal of detail and the 170 degree lens is great

  These are my initial impressions:  Pros: Great value for a 4K dash cam, super capacitor means much better temperature tolerance, accepts up to 256GB micro SD, very easy to install and set up. GPS and hard wire kits are inexpensive and easy to install, reliable  Cons: Image is good but not great, no CPL filter options (maybe you could rig something), CPL filter really needed due to mounting design, GPS mount further limits installation options, no option to add a rear camera  In the end, I've decided to upgrade to a Blackvue 900S. The kit I've ordered costs more than twice as much but includes the 4K front camera, HD rear camera, built-in GPS and hard-wire kit with adjustable auto cut-off voltage. After using the X4 I've decided I really want something more discrete and I should be able to mount the Blackvue under my rear-view mirror cluster which puts it above the mid-line of the windshield with the camera lens pretty close to the glass to cut down on reflections

 There is also no CPL filter available for this camera which can be a problem. Due to the design, the camera will sit several inches from your windshield and low enough that on a bright day you get a lot of reflection from your dash, at least I do in my Grand Cherokee. This reflection can make it difficult to even read a license plate on a car sitting right in front of me. Plates further out - outside of the worst reflections are totally readable
