Press the power button once to turn it on, and the device displays the previous temperature reading for a couple of seconds while it gets ready to take the next one. It comes with a few disposable probe covers and a hard plastic storage case. If you are looking for a basic, intuitive thermometer and don't need a ton of features, this is the one.
The downsides of this model are minor. Its memory only records one previous temperature reading, and it only displays this for a couple of seconds, and then it's gone. As a traditional probe model, it takes between 5-10 seconds to yield a reading instead of the near-instantaneous output of infrared styles.  This was before any running around, with no drinking of hot or cold liquids. The Vicks gave a result in 5-10 seconds. I kept the liquid thermometers in my mouth for 10 minutes to fully equilibrate. Readings high, but consistently so,  and you get an answer in seconds

  To remove the thermometer from the sleeve you need to put your finger very close to the display, and I feel it is only a matter of time before damage to the display occurs. I decided to put the thermometer in backwards and removing it by placing my thumbnail in the slot for the battery cover. This may very well be the way it is supposed to go in, but since Vicks didn't bother to mention the sleeve in the instructions at all, how can we know.  To change the battery, you need to first unlock the battery cover (easy enough with a coin, screwdriver or the curved part of the plastic sleeve)

Accurate reading but has flaws

 You can't just stick it under your tongue and press the button, which is what I've been able to do with every other digital thermometer I've owned over the past couple decades.  While the original thermometer was neither consistent nor accurate, the replacement seems reasonably accurate so far. The sleek design is a plus, but I find the thermometer's beep painfully loud. If I were sick, I would not at all enjoy hearing that sound

It works--if you know the secret

Unfortunately, I didn't unpackage this item until I needed it and I'm now beyond the return window. Not only does the advertised color coding not work, but the screen isn't illuminated at all after the temperature reading. This makes it difficult to see the temperature in low-light conditions (which is typically when trying to get readings from sleepy toddlers) without having to go into a different space. The screen does light up when it's turned on, it just doesn't work when taking a temperature

 Generally speaking, I still think this thermometer is a good value, but I got a defective product that I'm now stuck with :(

Accurate and easy to use ... BUT the color coding doesn't work as advertised

 I happened to have a few 1220 batteries, which are slightly thinner, but fit and worked fine. If not, I would have exchanged it.
