Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives
The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion.

Sharpening
To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.

Cleaning
After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Who’s multitools are better?

The pliers are great for working with small parts,hobbies/crafts,hunting/fishing,or light repairs.  So in my personal opinion I think the Victorinox pliers are a coin-toss,like I said they lack definition but they are useful..

There's alot to like about the Victorinox Spirit X and a few things I don't,I guess it depends on who you are really...but by no means is the Spirit X a bad multi-tool

..I wish they were more defined.The pliers have a rounded off tip rather than a needle-nose with two-different sized hard-wire notches with a small soft wire cutter section

it's a neat approach.It's got it's few things that make it less universal for my needs but it's certainly earned it's place as a dedicated camping/hiking multi-tool and it's very sturdy.It is a tad overpriced but I imagine the very high quality has alot to do with it,but with the lifetime warranty how can you go wrong?In my opinion take a minute and observe each tool and determine if it suits your needs because it isn't made cheap.

Victorinox Spirit X Review

I recently visited my sister and was going to quickly fix something that was unscrewed, only to find that she did not have a screwdriver or any other tool for that matter. She's new to being on her own and not particularly handy, so I can kind of see why this happened, but I can't keep letting her exist this way. lol

I was thinking about getting her a small toolbox/kit, but to be perfectly honest she is the kind of person that would lose everything quickly. So I think a solid multitool would be the perfect option to take care of random around-the-apartment needs. I started researching, but there are just so many options out there! I would really appreciate some recommendations!


A few requirements/preferences:

-A multitool based around a set of needle-nose pliers would be preferred. Personally, I find that a good set of versatile pliers is a staple.
-Size/weight is not an issue. This item will probably be kept in a drawer, not carried around. In fact, since this will literally be the only tool she has, something more heavy-duty is probably preferred.
-NO REMOVABLE BITS. I cannot stress enough how easily she loses things. Those bits will disappear. I would rather the tool have a small selection of different drivers than have every bit type covered.
-A knife is not necessary. The tool will be kept in an apartment, so there will be other knives around. Not that having a knife wouldn't probably be nice, it's just not a dealbreaker.
-Similarly, scissors, bottle opener, can opener, corkscrew, and nail file, are all fine to have on the tool, but not NECESSARY. She does have these items in her home. What I'm looking for are more "handyman" type tools, not literally anything someone might need if they were stranded.

Best multitool for home? For someone that literally has no other tools? College student/first apartment

 The saw is simply wicked and I could not envision a better design for one. The file has a strong bite to it and the edge is also a file like a metal saw. The lock is similar in both units as far as usage and both fair equally well there. You need some fingernails to open any tool in this unit but I haven't found it all that difficult and I don't have to open a different tool to get at another like with the Gerber sometimes

 They function still, but I expected more of a dent than a big chip out of them. The steel appears the same in both units and I suspect it is, thus I mention this for those that abuse everything.  In the only comparison I can make, I own a Gerber Legend 800 and have used it since 2003. It was my preferred tool until the scissors spring broke in half a couple of weeks ago (that tool saves me a lot of walking, time, and weight at my job)

The smallest flathead chipped on the very first use, so I filed it down into a new profile and it has held up well since. Several of the rubber grippies peeled off

 The unit lacks a proper saw on it (look up Remgrit and learn to hate it for most uses) and the file is mediocre at best. The knife blade was too small and yet the pliers are beastly. The one hand/side flip open knife and scissors were the best idea ever on a tool. In contrast we have the Swisstool

Initial Impressions

Check out the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X. Best multi tool I’ve ever used and I’ve used almost every Leatherman out there.

Guys is the skeletool a good edc? It will be my one and only multitool so I wonder if it's a good pick as it doesn't have that much tools.

 The case fits well and doesn't slide around much at all on my 2" utility belt. The tool arrived well oiled appearing to have been cared for until packaged for distribution.  My overall initial impression is this tool strikes a good balance of tension and smoothness to provide a quality tool suitable for general purpose work. It would certainly suffice until more appropriate tools were on hand

 The tools themselves are very general purpose and don't seem to be designed for any particular trade or use. The pivot pin of the pliers is smooth, has no spring or tension to it, nor any lateral/sideways movement. The case fits well and doesn't slide around much at all on my 2" utility belt.  I will edit this review after the tool has loosened up and I have had a chance to use and sharpen all of the tools. (Update 1: The carry pouch for the tool closes via a button which I have not been able to master. It takes some finesse to close properly and if it is hit just right it will open unknowingly. I've recently replaced it with an old multi-tool case that has a velcro closure because I fly helicopters with the doors off

  My overall initial impression is this tool strikes a good balance of tension and smoothness to provide a quality tool suitable for general purpose work. Quality General Purpose Multitool

I’m looking for something that is handy and useful for all day EDC but I don’t want to spend a ton of money experimenting with different models. I would probably be using this the most for light automotive maintenance because I drive old crappy cars that break. 
-Are multi tools with tons of tools more useful or is the bulkyness a detriment? -Which brand would you recommend biased purely in quality?

Looking to buy my first multitool and I need advice.

 The knife blades are scary sharp and probably the sharpest of any production line knife made today, plus they are stainless steel. The heftyness of the tool speaks of it's quality, ruggedness and ability to do the job. I have broken the plier head jaws on several other manufacturers multitools , never on a Swisstool, including the smaller Swisstool Spirit, they are made to last a lifetime. I have had occasion to send Swiss Army Knives t Made in Switzerland with a lifetime warranty

I used to carry a well known name brand multitool until I found THREE superior options ( my decision was based on 40+ years as a fire fighter, police officer and bomb disposal technician ( EOD ). I have owned a number of multitools over the years and abused them all ( that's why the good ones have a lifetime warranty ). The three best for the money in my opinion are the 1. SOG Powerlock , 2

00.  The second multitool in the lineup is a Victorinox SwissTool which comes equipped with both a plain edge AND a serrated blade / seat belt cutter which can be life saving in a auto accident. Victorinox Swisstools are quality unsurpassed , as are ALL of the lineup of Swiss Army Knives. Swisstool is a multitool you NEED to own ...

 While many differences exist between the two, most come down to personal preference rather than quality. For example, I like the standard (small) Leatherman pliers better because of the finer shape of the nose, but the Swisstool pliers are also excellent. This Swisstool offers the ability to use the various tools without opening up the handles, and this might be an advantage for some. Also, the curved design of the Swisstool allows for better hand comfort when using the pliers, although I have never considered this to be an issue with my Leathermans

 I really, really wanted a straight design with the measuring scale, but that is only available in a larger model. The scissors are a bit puny when compared to the larger model. And the knife blade on this particular Swisstool is kind of smallish and a less aggressive design than the Leathermans I have owned. I should also mention that I hate the stiffness and long, long “break-in” period on any of these tools

 So overall, I have to take the middle ground as to which is better. I suppose the Swisstool gets points for sexiness, due to the absolutely perfect polished finish and graceful design, but I still love all of my Leatherman models, and they still turn heads when I deploy the tools and fix something in a fraction of the time it would take someone to walk to some location and grab a toolbag. Overall, the reason I ended up with the Swisstool instead of the Leatherman is due to the thickness, the size when closed, and the price to get (most) of the features I wanted. The Leatherman models I considered were either small and toy-like, or big, heavy and expensive; I have found that the thickness of the tool is the biggest issue with carrying in my front pocket without a case, rather than overall length

 The sharpness and toughness of the tools may surpass that of my previous Leatherman models, and the small chisel is a bonus that I now realize will see much service in the future.  Dislikes: not much. I really, really wanted a straight design with the measuring scale, but that is only available in a larger model. The scissors are a bit puny when compared to the larger model

 and again it works perfectly. The swiss army knife-like blade is fine for how I use it..

.. this is the only tool that I know of that's mostly impervious to the elements and still gets every job done that I need it to. It's rusted a little before, after a particularly wet fishing trip (4ft seas) and a few days left to its own devices to stew in salt spray (I forgot about it), but a little bit of elbow grease and the little rust spots come right off and it still looks practically brand new

 If you're out on a boat, it's incredibly handy to have a multi-tool... so you don't have to run all over the place looking for a specific tool

 From what I understand it's because of the incredibly high degree of polish.  If you work in a factory or on cars or something and you need a big hefty multi-tool, there are probably better options. If you're really into advanced cool-looking razor-sharp knife blades on a multi-tool, leatherman wave/charge is definitely better. If you live anywhere that's humid and near the sea, I sincerely doubt you can find a better more practical tool than the spirit x
