What this means is, after SLC cache space(12GB) is exhausted, the write speed gets considerably slower on 'newer' SN550 products - almost on par with SN350. Customers wouldn't notice the difference until they actually check out write speed.

But I'm not so certain to take this info at face value yet, as this article is from a random chinese website. Also I haven't found a single article mentioning about this scam in other places.

Even a lower cost Western Digital SN550 3.0 blows an SSD away in speed comparisons for file transfer and gaming. My primary OS drive is an Western Digital SN850 4.0

I have a NR200P and I'm highly considering unplugging the Audio and USB cables from the front panel and tuck them away inside the front purely because I don't like seeing them. Plus my headphones is connected through USB with an Apple Dongle for that DAC benefit and using a USB hub, pretty much negating the need for these both.

  


Then there's my SATA SSD. Im highly considering getting an NVME SSD not because it's an upgrade (heard the speed difference between SATA SSD and NVME SSD is very negligable anyways) but because it eliminates the need for a SATA data and PCIe cable.

  


Is anyone in the same boat?

Has anyone else upgraded from SATA SSD to NVME SSD purely to eliminate cables?

. You should NOT have to spend HOURS sifting through %#*!!^$ YouTube videos to find simple installation information. OR, to discover the reason you can not figure out HOW to finish the install.

 After applying the non-conductive cooling mat on top of a small appliance below the SSD install location I was then able to install the SSD in its slot which is when I started to wonder how you're supposed to lock down the far end of the SSD? (the missing hardware).  Once you figure all this out you use two screws to lock the fancy looking anodized aluminum-cooling bar, back over the SSD.  Not knowing any of this in advance, and with the kit missing the hardware to properly secure the loose end of the SSD made this more challenging (and frustrating, and time consuming) than was necessary. MUCH better instructions in-box and online would have made this whole day-long ordeal, a 20 minute job

  Once it was all figured and installed, it works great! 1TB operating system SSD and its QUICK! Win 10 Pro loads up with everything in about 30 sec! This is a fantastic SSD and works LIGHTENING FAST! Could not be happier with the product in THIS respect! But getting there was a nasty learning experience I do not want to repeat any time soon. lol would have been 5 stars but for the missing part and absolute crap instructions.

The install should have been easier - Kit was missing the brass fixing nut.

 The differential is that green is a SATA interface and black has a cache chip and also uses multiple memory chips. The blue here, the SN550 has its 1TB capacity in a single chip and the way Western Digital has achieved that is by moving from 64 layer NAND to 96 layer NAND. So 1TB in a single chip. The other chip on the PCB is their controller

 It so happens inside my own PC, I've got a one terabyte black SSD, so I've run dashboard on my own PC and it does indeed identify the black. Funnily enough, it also identifies one of my other SSDs in the machine, which is a SanDisk. Of course, it's the same company, but it is a Western Digital dashboard and it so happens it works both with SanDisk and WED. Interesting to see that the SanDisk, which is a two and a half inch SSD, is running considerably cooler than the M

 As queue depth increases, the SN750 fights back, but generally speaking the SN550 holds its own and performed better than we would have expected. In most of our charts you'll find the SN550 is a quarter or a third of the way up the page from the bottom. So performance is OK, but we're definitely in budget territory. Edit: I appreciate all the information added to this discussion, it is now much more in-depth than just M.2 ≠ NVMe, so here are some other useful points added in the comments: 

M.2 is a form factor (slot on the motherboard) like 2.5” is a form factor. NVMe is a drive, like AHCI is drive (“SATA SSD” is commonly used to refer to ACHI driven storage because they connect to SATA ports) Both NVMe and SATA (AHCI) are solid state drive (SSD) for how they encode and store files, different from the HDD dinosaurs. Not all M.2 are NVMe, but most NVMe are M.2. Thank <a href="/u/L00S33R">u/L00S33R</a> top comment for this explanation, and teaching me about U.2 drives. 

DRAM also influences storage quality/speeds and can be present or not independent of NVMe drive. DRAM &gt; no DRAM, although I am not sure how this benefit interacts with NVMe or SATA SSD differently. Some of you brought up more factors that go into storage that I know nothing about… It can all get confusing, just try to make a semi-informed choice 

The speeds that can be reached with NVMe are not very beneficial for gaming outside of small load time improvements compared to SATA SSD, but may be in the future if developers leverage the speed (which seems more likely with NVIDIA RTX IO in the 3000 series directly decompressing SSD to the GPU)

M.2 ≠ NVMe speed

  via C port; about 21 minutes; about 1045 GB per hour--about 5% faster than the A port.  Crystal Disk Mark reports that the overall speeds are 40 to 50% faster on the C port. Maybe true in a benchmark, but I realized only the 5% difference noted in my real-world use case.  This 500 GB model has a TBW of 300

No issues after 3 days

 I'll see you in the next one. From all that testing, it's pretty clear that the WD Blue SN551 terabyte isn't the fastest of the lot and that's kind of the point of it. It's not supposed to be, it's supposed to be affordable. Now there's a lot of variation in all the drives that we select and they all come in different price points for different use cases and I actually think it's a pretty good sample of drives you might consider buying if you're out trying to buy a new drive and it's all the way from like the entry level up to the high end and there's a lot of other things to consider as well with varying amounts of cache and the capacity and the pool of drives but yeah, I can only provide you with the information that I've got on hand and all the data that we've got available so as usual, take everything that you're seeing in this video with a grain of salt

 So if we compare it to a faster drive like the Seagate Firecooter 510, the SN551 terabyte in Australian dollars because that's my local currency, the Seagate drive is about 42% more expensive than the WD drive and it's only around 17 to 20% faster in sequential read and write workloads and what does that even mean to the regular user? It means you can save money without actually losing a whole lot of performance and I guarantee most people out there won't even be able to tell the difference anyways and if I were to blindfold you and do two test benches and I didn't tell you what drives they were, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference either. Now I think the WD Blue SN550 in terms of value is pretty on point and if you're interested in kind of getting something fast enough for gaming or content creation and you wanna save a few bucks in the process, it's probably gonna be a pretty decent drive for you guys to pick up but if you're interested in grabbing one, they come in a few sizes like I already mentioned, there's a 250 gig version, a 500 gig version, a one terabyte, the one terabyte version which is this little guy right here, it's going for around 120 US dollars or around 235 Australian dollars at the time of filming this video and I think that is honestly some pretty decent value for a one terabyte SSD, even a couple years ago, a regular 2.5 inch drive would have been a lot more expensive, so yeah. Let me know what you guys think of the drive, also let me know what drives you guys are all using at the moment

 All this is well and good but to be honest, it's a bunch of stuff that WD basically has all over their website but that's not what we do around here. So what I decided to do again was put 12 of the available M.2 drives that we've got through a crazy amount of testing and the way we test this is we fill every drive to 50% capacity, we run five different tests, we run that 20 times and we calculate the average speed of all of those 20 tests conducted.
