Searching for a great rooftop box that won't blow your entire gear budget? The Yakima Skybox Carbonite is a fantastic value. This rock-solid box is another one of our absolute favorites, and we would highly recommend it. The SkyBox Carbonite does a great job of keeping our gear safe, secure, and easily accessible, all at a price that leaves some money left over to buy gear to fill it. The lid isn't really floppy at all, and the latching system indicates when the SkyBox is unlocked, making it much harder to drive away with an unlocked box accidentally. On top of that, the matte black finish hides scuffs and scrapes much better than the glossy sheen of some of the more sleek and stylish models we have tested. 
However, the initial installation is quite a pain. If you plan on leaving the cargo box installed on a semi-permanent to permanent basis, the more laborious installation procedure shouldn't be a deterrent at all. We think those who plan only to throw the box on their car for an infrequent weekend getaway should opt for a model with a bit more installation convenience.

 So we really do need the extra space to use the cargo carrier with to carry all our baggage, towels, clothing, dog food, name it. We stuff it to the brim. We don't have enough space in the back to do that, especially with the dog back there. So anyhow, getting in and out, taking the cargo box on and off is definitely a big thing for us

 Both sides of the wheels have to be tightened to make sure this thing doesn't fly off when you're going on the highway. Okay, there's that side, I'm going to go around to the other side and we'll take a look when we're back. All right, so I'm back here on the other side, we're going to do these two other clamps. As you can see, I've done the two on the left side, I'm doing the two on the right side now

 So again, let's twist this first, good, it's unlocked, lift it up, and let's put the clamps in place. Okay, so clamp number one, there we go, clamp number two, there we go, make sure these wheels are tightened as well, the ones in the back. Both sides of the wheels have to be tightened to make sure this thing doesn't fly off when you're going on the highway. Okay, there's that side, I'm going to go around to the other side and we'll take a look when we're back

Yakima Skybox 16 Carbonite Review

 The picture of the hinges shows the OLD hinges.  We put this on our Mazda 5 ( see pics). It fits perfectly. Took it on a few trips, most recently a 500 mile round trip drive, including highway speeds at a sustained 70 mph with a top speed of probably 80 mph

 The pack and play fits up top easily. The two high chairs won't fit. The key is junk and you can almost bend it with your hand. We'll be ordering replacement locks and keys for sure

 Very easy. Inside there's adjustable clamps with really easy locking mechanism so you can adjust to the width of just about any rack that you've got and I've got it on my old round bars. It fits aero bars, it fits factory racks, just about any rack that you've got out there this box is going to fit on and it's fully adjustable. You've also got lash down points placed inside so if you have a loose load or a couple of skis you can lash them down here so they're not bouncing around when you're driving down the road

I ordered the Yakima Skybox 16 a few weeks before embarking on a camping trip. I settled on the Yakima versus the Thule because I had read some discouraging reviews about the Thule letting water into the box.  Having installed the Yakima carrier weeks before actually needing to load it, I paid close attention to its overall functionality. During this time, we had four days of pretty intense rain

 However, one would expect for $600 Yakima (and Thule) would understand that at the top of our list, we don't want our sh-t to get wet. An integrated weather seal around the perimeter would either stop all or most of the water. Maybe even introduce weeps or a gutter inside the box so water can get out if it gets in (Most of your windows do this).  I was curious if anybody had tried this themselves, so I poked around the internet and found a camping blog that discussed a DIY method for adding weatherstripping to the cargo carrier

 Ive no doubt that for the very experienced this is a good box, but for others, id make the following observations and comparisons.to the main competitor the Thule. Positives:- Very nice shape box, and the cutaway at the back means its a much easier (than the Thule) fit to marginal length suvs, where the protruding radio antenna may hit the underside, or where the hatch when open may hit the back of the box. 

 My Hyundai suv easily accommodated this box whereas the Thule Foce CargoBox was a just about (fortunately it did fit) . Negatives:- The system for clamping on the crossbar is slightly complicated, but most importantly requres a great deal of strength. I could not manage it without some exertion.The Thule buy contrast is a sturdier and less complicated twist system, which my spouse or I could manage

Nice shape, but not as simple or as well designed as others

 Much lower wind-resistance than the ancient one this replaced. Fits much more stuff than you'd guess. With the exception that now one side's hinges/lock are now jammed into place after the issue above, works well.

Deceptively large, ie its streamlined looks belie the amount of stuff you can actually get in it.  Installation is a bit fiddly at first. Loosen all the thumbscrews first, particularly the ones that control the amount of clamp leverage to allow them to fully open, otherwise it's difficult to get all 4 positioned at the same time without multiple trips to each side of the vehicle to be able to reach both sides (given it's larger than it looks).  My niggle is that the hinge mechanisms are more delicate than they look

 I needed something to protect me from the elements and was going to build a body of my own which would have costed more in time and money and would not have looked as sporty as the Yakima does. When the Yakima arrived I immediately noticed foot prints on the shipping box where some knuckle-head decided to walk across it when it clearly says "do not stack anything on top" ..

.the shipping box was all smashed and torn. I was not happy until I opened the box for examination and when i did to my surprise everything looked good. I have to say i am very impressed with the quality of the Cargo Box it looks very sporty and well built, the way they trimmed the bottom edge of it was straight
