Furniture style digital pianos are a whole lot lighter and easier to maintain than an acoustic, but their overall footprint isn't a whole lot less than a smaller upright, so from a space consideration, they're not a huge savings. If you're looking for portables, I used to be a big proponent of Kawai digital pianos -- they've recently jumped up in price, though, so I'm more inclined to recommend Yamaha these days.

Firstly, I would not really recommend a keyboard in this price range if you're serious about sticking with piano long-term. You'll quickly outgrow the semi-weighted keys and the lack of a full 88 keys may come to bite you in the future. The best bet would be to save a bit more to get something like a Yamaha P series, Roland FP series, or Casio PX series keyboard.
