If you're looking for an action camera, the best cheap camera we've tested for action video is the AKASO V50X. It's incredibly portable and easy to mount with several mounting accessories in the box. The camera itself feels decently put-together, but it also comes with a protective case that renders it waterproof to an advertised depth of 131 ft (40 m).

Its menu system is easy to navigate, and you can connect the camera to your smartphone through AKASO's companion app, which lets you preview footage and control the camera remotely. The camera has a good battery life, lasting for approximately 90 minutes of continuous recording on a full charge, though battery life can also vary with settings and usage. It has a fantastic video stabilization feature that effectively smooths out camera shake, albeit with a bit of a crop.

Unfortunately, its frame rate options are limited compared to more expensive action cameras, as it can only record 4k video at 30 fps and 1080p video at either 30 fps or 60 fps. That means you can still capture fast action footage in FHD, but it's not great for high-speed recording or slow-motion video. Still, for under $100, this is a serviceable action camera that won't break the bank.

The best GoPro alternative we've tested for those on a budget is the AKASO V50X. It's lightweight and portable, and it feels solidly built, with a rubberized outer coating that provides a more secure grip and a screen that's bright enough to overcome glare. It comes with several mounting accessories in the box, as well as an additional protective case that's advertised to render it waterproof to a depth of 131 ft.

This camera has a fantastic video stabilization feature that effectively smooths out camera shake whether you're shooting in 4k or 1080p and whether you're moving quickly or slowly, although enabling it does incur a significant crop on your videos. It delivers okay video quality when shooting in 4k in brighter lighting conditions, though it's comparable to other GoPro alternatives and performs worse in 1080p and dimly-lit conditions.

Unfortunately, its frame rate options are limited. It can only shoot at 30 or 60 fps in 1080p, which is suitable for capturing fast action but less suited to generating slow-motion footage, and the camera is limited to 30 fps in 4k. On the upside, it has a decent battery life in video, and unlike some other cheaper GoPro alternatives, it also gives you the option to adjust the camera's field of view. Overall, this camera offers lots of value for its price, making it a good choice for those on a budget.

For action video, there's nothing better than a portable action camera, but if you don't want to dish out for a GoPro, there are still some decent options that'll let you capture action footage without spending a fortune. The AKASO V50X is a solid cheap action cam that can shoot in 4k or 1080p. It's super portable and comes with a protective case that gives it added durability and allows you to submerge it in water down to 131 ft (40 m). If you're after something even cheaper, the AKASO V50X is a simple, lightweight action cam that offers decent value for its price.  So next we are gonna move on to some nighttime recordings and unfortunately the nighttime recordings don't look as good as the daytime ones but let's check those out and I'll be right back. And as you've seen for yourself the nighttime recordings don't look that amazing, the footage is quite grainy and whenever you're using the electronic image stabilization the image kind of looks distorted, it does look much much better whenever I was recording using the gimbal and the electronic image stabilization was off. Since this camera has a touch screen it is extremely simple to use as well, so from the main screen if you swipe left or right you can choose in between the video recording mode or the picture taking mode, but if you press in the center at the bottom you can see all the other modes available, so you can have like a driving mode, a time-lapse mode, a photo-lapse mode etc etc, depending what you need. The menu system is divided in three parts as well, so we get the video settings menu and just to give you an example if you go into the video settings menu you can change the resolution and as I mentioned earlier we have a lot of resolutions available, you can turn on or off the image stabilization, you can turn on or off the gyroscope, you can even turn on or off the microphone, the camera's microphone depending if you wanna record the sound or not

 Let's try it out but moving on you have a micro USB port and a micro HDMI along with your SD card. I feel a little vulnerable because I don't know open but hey so is every cell phone I have. I'm just used to the GoPro having that cover there and that's my old GoPro. I'm comparing it to a Hero 4 and as far as image quality goes I'd say the console takes better pictures slightly better pictures than the Hero 4

 The thing I like most about it is this bad boy right here. This is something none of the GoPros have that I've ever noticed and this allows you to mount this thing to a tripod or a monopod or a monopod without that housing that it comes with. The problem with the housing with the GoPros anyway is how I even stumbled across this thing is that once you put it inside the waterproof housing the the microphone quality is I mean goes out the window. So I was trying to figure out a way to do this and I saw this I'm like wow that's only $99

 You're going to need a waterproof case. They say you don't need a case at all for the newer ones but you do apparently and so I would say you know for that as well. But if you're going to be scuba diving then I would say yeah maybe get the camera then. Or people who just want a cheap walk around camera like if you wanted to wear this because I know when I work on cars you know I would love to have something strapped to my forehead or strapped to my chest or something like that so people can see what I see without me having to hold the thing and I can still use both my hands it'll come in handy for that

 Battery life is somewhat decent, I experienced 1 hour / 1h20min of full recording with the screen brightness at max with a fully charged battery. Overall is a reasonable budget-friendly action camera for personal recording but is not recommended if the footage is intended for professional use such as youtube.

 If you need a second look, there’s no need to go back for it.  The 50X offers 10 video resolutions. Along with the four found on the Pro--4K/30fps, 2.7K/30fps, 1080K/60fps and 720K/120fps--the 50X also offers 2K/60fps, 2K/30fps, 1080K/90fps, 1080K/30fps, 720K/60fps and 720K/30fps

 The battery checked out fine. I’ll assume it’s defective and in need of replacement because nothing in good working order can perform this badly.  Connectivity improves with the Roadcam app, which allows for live previewing, capturing, viewing, storing and sharing images with a smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but a trouble-free and more reliable capture alternative to the remote

 But, depending on the scene, with the proper video editing, WDR could offer advantages.  For a 12mp camera, the 50X photo quality is quite good. Compared even to the 20mp Pro image, the 12mp image of the 50X didn't have the digital clumping and excessive contrast of the Pro, and I preferred it. I was impressed, too, with low-light images shot even at a ridiculously high 3200 ISO

  Video image quality for the Pro and 50X is quite comparable, and both are good at this price point. But I’d give a slight nod to the 50X, despite the greenish color bias of the Pro being friendlier to my eye than the oversaturated magenta bias of the 50X. Depending on the lighting, purple fringing is quite noticeable in some images.  The Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) video feature is meant to increase shadow and highlight detail in high contrast lighting

To know it is to like it

 First of all, it is real 4K, there is tons of detail, there's a little bit of noise in daylight, colors are bright, contrast is high, and if you don't like the way the video is, too bad because there's really no way to tweak contrast or saturation. To be honest though, in this resolution, for the most part I found myself extremely satisfied with how the video looked, and I feel that most people buying their first action cam, who this camera seems to be kind of targeted at, will be more than pleased with how this video looks. However, there are some minor flaws in the video quality that stand out at 4K, most notably purple fringing that halos around bright objects like these tree branches here, or disgusting lens flares that show up when you point at the sun, or even when the sun is just out of frame, so I'm guessing that sacrifices were made in terms of lens quality in order to hit a low price point. The stabilisation qualities make the V50X seem like it is suited for vlogging or walk and talk video

 4K 30 has image stabilization, and that image stabilization is quite good in most situations, we'll talk more on that a little bit later. For now let's look at the technical qualities of the 4K. First of all, it is real 4K, there is tons of detail, there's a little bit of noise in daylight, colors are bright, contrast is high, and if you don't like the way the video is, too bad because there's really no way to tweak contrast or saturation. To be honest though, in this resolution, for the most part I found myself extremely satisfied with how the video looked, and I feel that most people buying their first action cam, who this camera seems to be kind of targeted at, will be more than pleased with how this video looks

 That $100 price point is a bit of a tough one though because it's generally where manufacturers start to make big sacrifices in order to meet a cheap price. So let's talk about what the V50X does right and whether or not it's a good camera. Spoiler alert, it is pretty good overall but there are a few things that might be a deal breaker for you. If you're trying to decide between the V50X and the V50 Pro, I'd honestly recommend going for the Pro instead

 Alright and 4K 30fps, same sort of thing, just testing the synchronisation of the audio. The unfortunate part of this is you're probably not going to be able to hear me because the microphone on this camera is utter garbage. It is so quiet, muffled, well I guess it's about similar to most of the real low end action cameras like the 30, 40, 50 dollar ones. It's extremely muffled and lacks clarity and it's just not usable

I own the R and LOVE it for photography. Amazing images, camera looks badass, dynamic range is incredible, image quality is top notch..

Since a few months I've been debating over the R and the RP. If prices were similar I'll obviously choose the R since it's got better batteries, a better sensor, higher megapixels and is more robust.

However in my country (Netherlands) the R is almost 60% more expansive than the RP and to be honest for me 1600€ for a body only is too expensive for me and out of my budget.

The RP would be my first full frame camera and although battery life is really poor (I'll buy like 2 spare batteries) I kinda like it. 

For about a €1000 you can get an RP with the adaptor where as the R is at €1600 body only. Which means about €1700 for the pair, making it €700 more expensive.

Would it really be worth it to go for the R over the RP and does it make a huge difference?

Please let me know your experiences :)

Canon EOS R vs. EOS RP, is the R really worth it? Endless struggle

 Compared to the RP, the R just felt kinda hefty and the touch bar thing drove me nuts. Image quality was good but I don’t think it was significantly better than the RP for what I was shooting. 

 If you use a slow super-telephoto lens (I have the Sigma 150-600 Sport but will be upgrading to the RF100-500) the R6 will be the better performer. With the two lenses I’ve just mentioned, once you put on a 1.4x extender you’re talking about starting at f/9 and f/10 respectively at max focal length. These are slow and certainly the Sigma 150-600 works better for me with the R6

I have both the R and R6 and like both cameras. However, I’m using the R6 far more now. It’s not a snobby thing, I just find the R6 more flexible, and the results are visibly better, even with fewer MP. The fewer megapixels on the R6 isn't an issue for me and has its benefits

With only 20MP on the R6 the SD cards do not fill up as quickly and the image processing is faster

This Friday I'm going to upgrade from my 7 years old Canon EOS 600D (Rebel T3i) to a mirrorless Canon. I've been hesitating between the EOS R and the EOS R6 and was hoping you could tell me your experiences with those camera or simply your opinion. This is a pretty big step up for me and a pricey purchase so I want to make sure I make the right decision so any feedback is welcome.

The 600D I currently have is the only camera I ever had so I don't have much to compare the new ones with. I've had a chance to test the R6 already and it feels like an amazing camera.

The only reason I still consider the EOS R is because it's cheaper and the sensor has 10 more MP. Otherwise I'd rather get the R. The shop I went to to test the R6 told me that the reason for less MP in the R6 is that the sensor can get more light and we can boost the ISO without too much noise. However I don't do wedding photography or indoor photo in general so that's not really an interesting selling point for me. I essentially do outdoor photos (nature, flowers, animals, travel, ...) and astrophotography.

The main reasons I prefer the R6 over the R are the in body stabilization, the improved AF (based on what I've seen in reviews on YouTube), the AF on humans and animals eye and the joystick (much easier to move AF point imo).

While the price is an argument in favor of the R, it still is an expensive purchase and for "only" ~$800 difference, I don't want to go for the cheapest option and regret it 6 months down the line... Having less megapixels on the R6 is probably my biggest concern.

PS: If I was rich I would get the R5 in a heartbeat :p

However I don&#39;t do wedding photography or indoor photo in general so that&#39;s not really an interesting selling point for me. I essentially do outdoor photos (nature, flowers, animals, travel, ...) and astrophotography.

The main reasons I prefer the R6 over the R are the in body stabilization, the improved AF (based on what I&#39;ve seen in reviews on YouTube), the AF on humans and animals eye and the joystick (much easier to move AF point imo).

While the price is an argument in favor of the R, it still is an expensive purchase and for &quot;only&quot; ~$800 difference, I don&#39;t want to go for the cheapest option and regret it 6 months down the line... Having less megapixels on the R6 is probably my biggest concern.

PS: If I was rich I would get the R5 in a heartbeat :p

Edit: Thanks everyone for you comments and feedback. I will be going to the shop tomorrow to test the R6 one more time and someone will bring his personal EOS R so I can compare the 2. The person want to sell it but I don&#39;t know the price yet. If it&#39;s really a great opportunity I might end up buying it but right now my mind is set on the R6.

Need help deciding what new camera to buy (EOS R or R6)

 Never missing the shot with the 360 mod with the image stabilizer is a game changer coming from a fixed frame. I use the 4K mod too for some shots, but mainly find myself using the 360 so I can make the camera look at what makes the shot look best. I thought it would be hard to convert the footage to my computer but it is simple from the app and you can upload to Instagram or fb in not time after editing in the app. Worth the buy!
